Shortening the reviews?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

There’s been some discussion in the recap threads about people not liking the longer play-by-play format of review, which leads me to a more general discussion about my own work.  Most of you know by now that my time has been at a premium lately due to buying a house (and other stuff) and the reality is that I just don’t have all the opportunity I’d like to sit down and do much more than the weekly UFC reviews for Heavy.com.  And since those earn me money and I’ve got a mortgage, that’s my focus.  Anyway, that being said, I’m now on the mailing list for the people who distribute WWE DVDs, so I got a package with the Elimination Chamber, Ricky Steamboat and Fatal Four Way DVDs last week.  This is a pretty cool set of stuff, so what I’m wondering from you, the reader, is whether everyone would be horribly disappointed if I just did a general overview type of review like I do with other DVDs, or if the long form is a necessity.  With the Chamber DVD I can copy the reviews from the original PPVs and update with the ones I haven’t seen yet, so that one is easy enough, but I’d almost feel like I was ripping people off by not going match-by-match on the Steamboat set and just giving quick thoughts and star ratings.  Because otherwise it’ll be long wait.

Thoughts?

Hey, not sure if you want this or not, but I reviewed some of the content From the WWEClassics channel. If you want to put it on your website, feel free. If you like it and run with it, I'll send you some more, and some of the original content, too.

Sure, although it just makes me sadder that I’m not allowed to subscribe anymore.

We’re LIVE from Tulsa, fresh off a PPV in which Sheamus retained the title by running away from his problems. And hey, in a plot twist that no one could have legitimately anticipated, it looks like we have an actual MATCH, right off the bat.

Breaking DVD News!

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Benoit's on the new Elimination Chamber DVD- the match he was in on the New Year's Revolution PPV on 1/9/2005. By my count, this is the first WWE DVD with Benoit since the Ladder Match DVD (which, of course, predated the horrible double murder/suicide). Thought you'd find this interesting.

Holy shit, there’s an Elimination Chamber DVD?  THAT’S gonna get boring to watch after the first hour of it.

Oh, wait, the other thing.  They still have time to take that match off the DVD, so don’t count on seeing it there.  Benoit’s too heavily involved to just edit out (he’s in for about half an hour) but maybe they can digitally replace him with William Regal or something.

RAW Feelings

LAST WEEK, a perfectly good Main Event Handshake, on a pro-wrestling show, shockingly degenerated into fisticuffs, much to the chagrin of the Mystery General Manager. As punishment, John Cena has been ordered to face ALL SEVEN members of the Nexus faction in a Handicap Match, which makes me wonder if they missed the boat by never pitting Hulk Hogan against Barry Horowitz, Duane Gill, Mike Sharpe, Jim Powers, Steve Lombardi, Harvey Wippleman and the Red Rooster.

RAW Recap

By Christopher Castleberry

We’re LIVE, and Nexus is in the ring. Things are already off to a better start, as it appears that Barrett has been smuggled out of England to mercifully reassume leadership from David Otunga. They’re here to face the consequences of their actions against McMahon-- actions which, according to Barrett, are all part of a larger picture. He of course can’t reveal what that larger picture actually is, which just means the writers are still trying to come up with it.

Cena’s turn

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Hey Scott,

I was thinking this thought while watching Raw tonight. Wouldn't this be the perfect opportunity for Vince and crew to get the Cena heel turn out of the way by joining them? Eventually you know he's going to do a heel run. This seems like the perfect way too. Anyways, love your site. Keep on chugging along

Cena needs a heel turn in the worst way as a character, but not with this group of zeroes.  It’d be Austin and the Alliance all over again.  Plus Cena moves way too much merch to even consider a heel turn at this point – it’d be financial suicide for the sake of making a few internet fans happy.  That being said, much like Hogan in the 80s, eventually the “Cenation” will grow up and become jaded teenagers, and THAT’S when Cena will do an epic heel turn and it’ll be great.  Really, for what I watch, all I care about is that Cena delivers in the big matches.  People can cheer or boo him all they want, it’s a free country and he’ll draw money either way.

Who’s Bryan Danielson?

He has finally written something about getting fired from WWE:

You should post, if only so people can shout "I STILL THINK IT'S A
WORK" at each other in the comments.

Yeah, but there’s still people who shout at each other about Montreal being a work, so don’t expect this one to go away any time soon.

Random RAW Recap

Monday, June 28th, 2010

(contributed by reader Christopher Castleberry  - sounds like a NXT name, actually)

LAST MONDAY, things get uncomfortable between the boss and the new hires. The video packages tries to make these guys come across as the root of all evil, complete with demonic growling noises, but honestly, some of these guys are just too goofy-looking to appear all that menacing. There’s nothing inherently terrifying about Heath Slater, unless you harbor a fear of gingers, which isn’t completely out of the question, I suppose, but I doubt that’s what they were going for.
