But what about the 10 most appalling moments?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Just finished watching the 100 Most Shocking Moments in Music History of VH1 and it got me to thinking: In your opinion what are the 10 Most Shocking Moments in Pro Wrestling History? 100 is way too many to list, as there probably aren't 100 moments in pro wrestling history that were all that shocking, so I scaled it back to 10...Figured it'd be a topic that could keep us bloggites talking, for at least a little while.

Pff, easy list as far as a top 5 goes, although #1 is of course in a different sort of orbit than the others.

1.  Owen Hart plunges to his death on live TV.

2.  Hulk goes heel.

3.  Scott Hall shows up on Nitro.

4.  Lex Luger shows up on Nitro.

5.  Vince screws Bret.

Top Ten Heel Turn Explanations

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

From longtime reader Joe Petrow…

Hi Scott.  Your comment on Crush's heel turn got me going on yet another list...Top Ten Explanations For a Heel Turn!  Actually, these are explanations that are _too_ good, as they result in fans empathizing with the heel.  Not surprisingly, a lot of them involve Hogan, since it's so easy to understand siding against him.  I admit that it is very slanted towards 20th century WWF, but great explanations from WCW/NWA (Ron Garvin's "I will do anything for money"?  Pez Whatley going off because of an offhand remark that he's black?  The flavor-of-the-week joining the nWo "just because"?) or anytime in this decade (Steve Austin's "You don't deserve an explanation?"  Goldberg's...what the heck _was_ the reason for him turning heel anyway?) were hard to come by.  Anyhow...here ya go.

Gimmicks

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Hey Scott,
I want to ask how you feel about gimmicks and their marketablity. It seems these days, a "gimmick" is becoming less rare, especially in comparison to their heyday in the Hogan era. Specifically referring to WWE, the average wrestler these days comes out with just a name (usually their real one or a close variation), a pair of tights and a crew cut. It's basically the "cookie-cutter superstar" that the fed enjoys promoting.

The SmarK Rant - Best Wrestlemania Matches EVER

- So yeah, Undertaker v. Shawn Michaels ruled, but just how hard did it rule? For sake of comparison, here's my listing of my current Top 10 best matches in Wrestlemania history.

The SmarK DVD Rant for The New and Improved D-X!

- Here's an interesting one that I found for cheap, and it was interesting to me because all this "New D-X" stuff is exactly the period when I stopped watching WWE entirely, so it's a rare three-disc set of stuff where I've never seen ANY of it before outside of a couple of video packages and the RAW DVD set. So I figure it's worth a go for the price I paid. Which was basically nothing.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - October 11 1986

- God, it's been a lean month for content thus far on WWE 24/7, and with only a few updates this week and a 33-minute episode of WCW at that, there's not gonna be much new stuff from me, either. In case you were wondering.

The SmarK Rant for WWE Wrestlemania 21

- I was going to do No Way Out first, but I figured I'd get less e-mails bugging me about this one if I took care of it first, so since that's the kind of guy I am, here you go.

- Live from Los Angeles, CA.

- Your hosts are JR, King, Cole and Tazz.

- The set is probably one of the best they've ever done, where it truly says marquee on the wrestling, to quote Arn Anderson.

The SmarK DVD Rant for the Back to the Future Trilogy

[Note from time-traveling Scott in 2009:  This is a repost and update of my original rant on the trilogy from 2002, which has been recently re-released by Universal in single-disc sets.  I'm assuming that since it was written 7 years ago, a good chunk of my readership won't have read the original anyway]

Time travel stories give me a headache.

Guest Rant: Legends Bonus Disc

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Charlie Reneke writes...

I don't know if you planned on doing the Legends of Wrestling set that the WWE put out this last Tuesday, but if not I'm writing reviews of the sets, including the three Best Buy exclusive discs.  Here's the first one.  I didn't recap the round table discussions because they don't exactly lend themselves to it well.  The other two (Andre/Sheik and Piper/Funk) will be done shortly too.

Indeed I'm not planning on doing the Legends DVD, as I have to save up my excitement for the SNME DVD that should be arriving from Highspots next week.  That being said, the Hogan/Backlund show on 24/7 has the distinct honor of being one of the few shows that has actually put me to sleep because it's so dull, with the other being an MSG card from 1981 that had some ridiculous main event like Backlund v. Baron Mikel Sciculuna in a 2/3 falls match.

On with the review...
