NWA Clash of Champions #8

"Fall Brawl '89"

September 12, 1989

Carolina Coliseum - Columbia, South Carolina

-  Rummaging through my storage, I came across my 450+ tapes of wrestling that I have amassed over the past 23 years.  For personal reasons, I wanted to jump on this one because it is the only major televsion taping from my hometown outside of a Raw, Smackdown, Nitro, or Thunder.

WCW Still Sucks

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Hey Scott,

Been reading your board in regards to what everyone blames the death of WCW on, and wanted to connect to the man himself (you) for my thoughts. People like to blame Starcade 97 & the Finger Poke of Doom, and they are right, those things definately killed interest. But isn't just the lousy, arrogent, booking of Nitro the real thing to blame. I mean somewhere in 97 they got very over-confident and began airing never-ending Hogan masturbation promos w/ no real storytelling, just biding their time till Sting vs Hogan. Then in 98 there was some solid (questionable) effort. I mean they took a risk & split up the NWO & began building up Goldberg, with the DDP/Raven feud in the undercard. But then that summer the programming got really bad. The Warrior w/ his magic smoke & mirrors? Jay Leno/NWO Night Cap w/ Bischoff? And then after the poke of doom came the worst of all...The No Limit Soldiers. I mean instead of blaming one stupid incident, shouldn't we just blame it on years of bad TV?

There are a million things you can blame it on.  The years of bad TV certainly contributed as much as anything else, but TV is easy to turn around in a few weeks.  Killing PPV off?  That’s tough to come back from.

MICHAEL'S RAW REVIEW - EPISODE 2
MAY 17, 2010
TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA

-  Tonight's RAW is commercial free.  Should be a little more entertaining to watch with matches going a little longer.  I know I will appreciate that.  As for Sacrifice, looks like a bunch of unanswered questions for Thursday night.  Why advertise Sting vs. Jarrett, build it up, waste time on TV, and then can't deliver when you know Sting has been injured for a month??!?!?   Blackhawks 1, Sharks 0.  I love it.  Cue the opening video.

Fast Count v. Fingerpoke

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Scott, just got done watching WCW Starrcade 97, and here is my question that I thought might make for good blog discussion.  I have read several times from several people who pinpoint the "fingerpoke of doom" Nitro as the start of the downfall of WCW.  What about Starrcade 97?  I know it did a huge buyrate and made tons of money for the company, but it was also a chance for tons of people to see a truly disasterous PPV.  All the wrong people went over in terrible matches and then came the main event.  How do more people not talk about, or acknowledge how badly Hulk Hogan (or whoever was behind the "fast count" against Sting) screwed over Sting, and therefore WCW????  I mean in one night after a terrible ppv, WCW or Hogan or whoever made Sting, and Bret Hart look like complete and total failures.  Do you think that this PPV should be given more credit for starting a downfall of WCW that it gets???

I certainly give Starrcade its fair share of blame for WCW’s downfall!

This site is my newest addiction, as the guy makes his own Batman team-up covers, using existing artwork and merging it together.  Not too many up yet, but he’s adding new ones every day and I love the creativity involved.

Scott says:  Suck it, Blackhawks.

How NXT Works

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Hey Scott,
I've got a question for you and for the blog:
How the hell does NXT actually work? When people get "eliminated," do they just go back to FCW? Were all of them even from there? If they're all getting called up eventually, how are they going to explain it? I liked what Danielson did in his "farewell" promo this evening, but they can't use that for everyone. I give him a pass for it since his internet presence and history were very largely acknowledged and very much a part of his angle, but for anyone else it would be like when Sean Morely wasn't allowed to be in the IC Title battle royal since he wasn't a former IC champ, but Val Venis was allowed, or when they kept coming up with goofy ways for fired Alliance members to stick around after the InVasion angle ended (Lance Storm the janitor!).
And about the challenges: does WWE have wrestlers who they want to win the challenges, and therefore everyone else has to throw them? Did Wade Barrett reallyslip off the monkey bars twice, or did they tell him to? This approach couldn't work for all the challenges (Talk the Talk and selling programs, both of which were determined by the audience), so even as someone who's been a smark for years now, I admittedly can't get my head around how this particular show works. It's like it's this weird mix of shoot and kayfabe.

Having never watched an episode (it doesn’t air in Canada) I couldn’t get into any kind of in-depth discussion on the subject, but I’d say from everything I’ve read that it can best be summed up by “an interesting experiment that went totally and completely wrong”.  The Danielson losing streak was set up from day one to build to a US title win over the Miz, and that went out the window at some point, and really left the rest of the show totally pointless from the sounds of it.

Shawn Promo

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Hi Scott,

Hope all is well. So I was talking with some friends about early 90s wrestling and I remembered this really old and hilarious Shawn Michaels promo, probably around 1992 or 1993 but can't locate it anywhere. Shawn was IC champ at the time and I believe it aired during Superstars or may have been one of those promos hyping a house show. Anyway, the content of the piece was Shawn lamenting all the tough challengers he had and then he started listing jobbers like Reno Riggins, Dusty Wolfe, Barry Horowitz, etc as major threats to his title. It was a great promo but I can't find it anywhere so I'm wondering if you or your blog followers may remember it.

Not me, that’s for sure.  But then I wasn’t watching weekly WWF TV really closely at that time, either.
