The SmarK DVD Rant for Jake Roberts: Pick Your Poison

- This was one that I skipped when it came out because it didn't really appeal to me for $25. But for $6, hey, why not?

We start with a poem, written by Jake Roberts, so I'm already getting a bad feeling going into this.

Main Event #1

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Hey Scott.  Since you didn't redeliver on the "special surprise" that
was promised inside of the Royal Rumble 1988 recap, would you mind
reposting your rant for the 22nd anniversary of the epic Andre vs
Hogan "The Main Event" match held on February 5th, 1988?

22 years is a long time.

Here’s what I’m going to do because I dislike the original rant.  I’m going to post both the original version, plus the versions from the more recent DVDs, so people can have both.  Since it’s basically a two match show anyway.

The Netcop Retro Rant for Royal Rumble 1991

- Live from Miami, Florida, bastion of Americana and/or old people.

- Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Roddy Piper.

- This show is, of course, in the thick of the Gulf War and the Sgt. Slaughter storyline, and hence the crowd is in full xenophobic form.

Retro Repost: Bret Hart DVD

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

(Apparently this Bret Hart guy is all the rage right now among the kids, so here’s a repost of the DVD rant from 2004, with some formatting and spelling errors fixed)

The SmarK DVD Rant for Bret Hart: The Best There Is, The Best There Was, and The Best There Ever Will Be.

So here's how this is gonna work -- I've of course been hit by endless requests for this DVD, but didn't get the DVD until recently. I managed to watch the documentary portion previously and posted thoughts to the blog, but everyone wanted rants for the matches included, too, and I didn't really feel like going back to take notes on the documentary portion to do the entire DVD set. So the documentary portion is going to be a guest rant by longtime blog contributor and friend of mine Princess, who covered most of what I would have written about it anyway, and then we'll hit the matches with fresh rants for stuff I haven't done before or haven't done in a long time. For time reasons and for reasons of efficiency, I copied stuff where my opinions haven't changed or where an updated version wasn't going to be different enough to warrant a redo.

2009 DVDs

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Hi there, hope you are well. Here is one for the blog.

As a wrestling DVD afficianado, would you say 2009 has been the best year for the classic retrospectives? Think of these WWE releases:

Best of SNME

Best of the 90s

Randy Savage Collection

Allied Powers: Tag Team Collection (people had expectations which could not be met, but there is some good stuff on there)

Rise and Fall of WCW (see above)

Summerslam and Survivor Series anthologies

World Title set (not out for a couple more weeks, but looks like it has some good stuff)

I have been collecting them for a number of years, and I can not think of a year which had more great sets released. Is this the last year of the large number of great releases? Or do we have more awesomeness to come? If not this year, which would you say was the best?

It’s been a good year for them, certainly.  I can’t say as I generally can remember what year stuff was released in, but I recall that there was also a good run of stuff one year with the Mick Foley set, the Bret Hart collection and the original Flair collection all released fairly close together.  But yeah, for history sets, this has been a pretty boffo year, and I’m all over the World title set when it comes out.

Wrestlemania: The TV Special

Monday, August 31st, 2009

What the fuck was the point of this show? I DVR’d it out of curiosity and was assaulted by an hour of video packages hyping nothing and advertising nothing.  Hey, John Cena won a title that he no longer has from a guy who’s not even currently wrestling, that’s nice.  The show was only 4 months ago and already all the storylines have no connection to anything here, except of course that HHH is still fighting Randy Orton in an infinite time loop of suck.  Since there’s no WWE show on NBC, I don’t really understand what this is supposed to make me watch.  I’m guessing it was just a contractual obligation on NBC’s part to burn off the failed SNME experiment, but why not just show the Shawn v. Undertaker match to hook new viewers instead of using storylines that mean nothing to the current product?

SmackDown 8/21/09

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Hey guys, I told you I'd be a little early this week and I wanted to get this in before Summerfe...Slam airs. I'm going to go out with some friends and catch this one because I think it's got the potential to be very good.

One thing about Summerslam. For the 21 years in its existence it's very rarely been a bad show. Every show seems to have at least one memorable match and usually the build for this card is the best work the promotion does. Try to think of Summerslam that was really bad or didn't have at least one or two very good matches or extremely memorable, historic moments. It's hard to do.

So here are my predictions (not based what may or may not be the match order):

WM4 again

Friday, May 8th, 2009

If you believe the rumors/legend, the original plan for WM IV was for Ted Dibiase to win the WWF title and Randy Savage to beat the Honky Tonk Man for the IC title, but it was changed because HTM refused to lose the title to Savage for some reason.  If they would have stuck to the original plan, how do you think future plans would have changed? They were clearly building a Hogan/Dibiase feud and they would have probably have had a title match at Summerslam instead of the tag match we got. HTM surely would have become a jobber much sooner, but where would Savage have fit in? Would they have still done the MegaPowers Exploding angle, only with Hogan as WWF Champion and Savage as IC Champion. Heck, would Savage have even been in the main event at WM V?
Also, do you know if there was ever a Hogan/Dibiase singles match, as all of the matches I have seen involving them were tag matches like Summerslam 88?

More importantly, how would the tournament have gone with the original bracketing?  Originally the winner of Dibiase-Duggan was supposed to meet the winner of Gang-Bigelow and Jake-Rude was in the upper bracket instead.  I don’t even know where they would have gone with that setup.

Anyway, original idea for Summerslam was Savage winning the title from Dibiase as the big kickoff for the PPV tradition and then Savage goes to WM5 against Hogan like the universe dictated.  That was always set in stone.

And yes, Hogan and Dibiase had a pretty good singles match on SNME in 1989 and a bunch of good ones on the house show circuit.

The Princess SmackDown Rant (and her personal DVD) for April 24, 2009

The temperatures in Central Florida will be approaching 90 degrees so if I don’t get this done tonight I won’t until Sunday because I’m beaching it up this weekend.

The SmarK DVD Rant for The New and Improved D-X

The SmarK DVD Rant for The New and Improved D-X!

- Here's an interesting one that I found for cheap, and it was interesting to me because all this "New D-X" stuff is exactly the period when I stopped watching WWE entirely, so it's a rare three-disc set of stuff where I've never seen ANY of it before outside of a couple of video packages and the RAW DVD set. So I figure it's worth a go for the price I paid. Which was basically nothing.
