A couple of very close, and a couple of pretty surprising results to start us out here.
- Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo (60%) d. The Powers of Pain (29%).
- The Steiner Brothers (94%) d. The Filthy Animals (5%). Thanks for showing up, guys.
- Unbelievably, Steen/Generico and the Smoking Gunns garnered the exact same number of votes, so they do the old double pin spot and I flip a coin to send the Gunns to the next round with 39% of the vote.
- Doom (69%) d. The Sheepherders (16%). I thought this would be closer since I specified the Sheepherders and not the Bushwackers, but the people have spoken.
- The Rockers (81%) squash The Briscoe Brothers (15%). Maybe I should have left Benoit/Jericho in there after all?
- The Rock N Sock Connection (71%) d. AMW (26%). Another surprise to me, as I thought teamwork would win over star power, but I guess not.
- Demolition (54%) d. The Rock N Roll Express (43%). This one started as a massacre by the Demos, but the RNR gained momentum all through the day. They just couldn’t pull it out, however.
- The Road Warriors (87%) d. The APA (8%).
So for our next round later this week, that’ll give us:
- Windham & Rotundo v. The Steiner Brothers
- Smoking Gunns v. Doom
- Rockers v. Rock N Sock
- Demolition v. The Road Warriors
Stay tuned tonight as I post the voting brackets for the Eddie Gilbert division!

OK, after taking into account requests in the previous thread, I’ve subbed in a few popular choices and subbed out a few unpopular ones (mainly those with Paul Roma in them, oddly enough) and after a random seeding process, we now have a field of 64 teams.
So here’s how it’s going to work: I’ve organized the tournament into four divisions: The Jim Crockett Division, The Eddie Gilbert Division, The Lou Thesz Division and the Eddie Guerrero Division. Each division has eight first round matchups, and we will proceed through each division until there’s a winner of each one. Then it’s a four-team tournament to crown the ultimate tag team of all-time!
Seedings are entirely arbitrary and meaningless, so don’t get offended because Demolition and the Road Warriors ended up so close together, for instance.
I decided to go with three options: You can pick either team to win, or you can pick a draw if you’re playing armchair booker and think it would end up that way. You can use whatever criteria you want to choose your winner, whether it be the team that’s your favorite, the team you think would be booked to win, the team that would win a real fight, I don’t care.
The official pairings follow after the break, and then we’ll begin with the Jim Crockett Division tonight!

OK, so after giving this about 5 minutes of total thought, here’s my 64 team field for the first annual Scott’s Stupid Dream Tag Team Tournament. This is not in any particular order, it’s just 64 teams I could think of off the top of my head who are pretty cool and probably deserve slots here. If there’s any more deserving you can think of, now is the time to nominate them. I’m just gonna end up randomly seeding them and letting people vote in a poll to determine the winner. The criteria will be entirely up to you. Vote for your favorite, the ones who were the best workers, the ones you’d think would win a real fight, whatever.
The nominated teams:

The SmarK Retro Rant for WWF Survivor Series 1993
So since I'm at that point with Monday Night RAW now and the original rant badly needs a redo, here you are. Plus my theater isn't showing Bragging Rights (can you blame them?) and I don't feel like spending $50 on the HD PPV, so this is what you get from me today instead.
- Live from Boston, MA.
- Your hosts are Vince and for the last time on a WWF PPV, Bobby Heenan.

Hi Scott. I had an idea for a possible blog entry but it might seem a bit strange so please bear with me.
From Clash Of The Champions to Ring Of Honor nowadays, there's a tradition of other federations either competing directly with WrestleMania or trying to ride their coattails. So, I was wondering, in counterpoint to the all-time WrestleMania card you once did, what would be your all-time competing show?
A few rules:
--The wrestlers involved must have been active during the WrestleMania years but never wrestled at WrestleMania
--The wrestlers must have been stars in North America.
--Every wrestler can only be used once.
--It'd be a bit limiting to only use shows that occurred on WrestleMania weekend so since we're assuming we have access to a magical time machine to make this all possible, you cna include matches from any time during the year.
--Other than that, you can decide how many matches, how many titles, which titles, etc.
If that doesn't strike your interest, sorry to waste your time, but I'd be interested to see what you come up with!
I dunno, we’re eliminating a whole group of people who had great matches outside WM but competed in a few (or one) WMs (like Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, Vader, etc) so we’re really limiting ourselves out of the box. Obvious candidates for inclusion in our dream card:

Hey Scott,
Just a quick question that might be fun for you to answer.
Suppose, for some reason or another, WWE decided to start making DVD compilations specifically for fans. For the sake of argument, we'll say it's one of those 3-disc bad boys and you can load it up with whatever you like. I think each disc holds an average of about 3-4 hours? I've never clocked them.
So, if WWE was going to make the Scott Keith DVD, what would your list look like?
Hmm, now that’s an interesting question.
As I’m sure people as well aware of by now, I have basically the entire WWE DVD catalog already, so my tastes in a custom DVD would run towards stuff that is currently unavailable (or woefully unrepresented) on DVD and needing release. And yeah, each disc holds three hours. So here’s my picks:

Hey Scott,
Long time reader; first time emailer. What unexpected event or match made you mark out the most? BTW, you can't include you know who because he doesn't exist anymore. What event or match made you the most upset in a markish way? For the first question for me, it would be Chris Jericho beating the Rock and Austin in one night, or Vince showing up on Nitro. (I would include Y2J/you know who beating HHH/Austin for tag titles but he doesn't exist anymore.) For the 2nd question for me, I would say HHH getting his world title back from Hebner after Y2J unexpectingly won it on a fast 3 count earlier on RAW, or the Ultimate Warrior beating Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania VI (What can I say? I was 10 and a big Hulkamaniac at the time).
David
Well this is really several questions in one here.
By the way, PLEASE let’s just say “Chris Benoit” because the cutesiness is getting tiresome. I have it on the cover of my book, for pete’s sake. NEW BLOG RULE.
Anyway, Ultimate Warrior’s return at Wrestlemania VIII had me shitting my pants with shock and excitement because I had no clue it was coming, although it of course ended badly for all. Benoit winning the Royal Rumble was the last time I really went crazy (winning the title was nice, but once he had a shot at winning there was less thrill to it. The Rumble win was so unbelievable that it worked as a markout moment better for me). However, I should note that I was jumping up and down and generally losing my shit when Brock Lesnar won the UFC title last year, so it doesn’t always just apply to wrestling.
As for the moment that made me angriest, Sgt. Slaughter winning the belt from Warrior was irritating, but the moment that actually made me ANGRY was Randy Savage returning from a previous beating like a coward during the match and hitting Warrior with the scepter. I have no earthly idea why, but that act touched a nerve with me and I wanted to see him get his ass kicked for it like no other. Also, lemme tell ya, although now I love them all equally and don’t care about match results, in 1987 when Tully & Arn won the tag titles from the Rock N Roll Express by beating the holy hell out of Ricky Morton in a two-on-one match and cheating like motherfuckers…oh man. I mean, I liked the RNR but not hugely so it wasn’t even that I was huge fan of Morton’s or anything, but it was just so monstrously unfair and they weren’t even a regular team! They won me over pretty quick, though, as even a few years before getting properly smartened up to the business I had 100% converted to a Tully & Arn fan when they jumped to the WWF, so anything can be forgiven. Maybe it was because I got to see them get their comeuppance against Luger & Windham and thus revenge was served or whatever.
