The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - October 4 1986

- Your hosts are Tony & David. This is likely taped before the Omni show with the US tag title tournament they've been hyping for weeks, so no mention of the results or even the show here.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - September 20 1986

- Your hosts are Tony & David.

- We have apparently skipped a week, as the show kicks off with footage of Paul Ellering slapping Jim Cornette on the September 13 show, and we didn't get that one.

- The Bill & Budro Show kick things off by promising to win the US tag titles and challenge Ric Flair for the millionth time.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - September 6 1986

A reader notes…

"Hey Scott,

Long-time fan of your site and your wrestling writings.

I know you're not a fan of Hogan but do you realize today marks 25 years since Hogan won the title? It's crazy...that was right around the time I started watching wrestling and to think 25 years have passed since then is something else.

Enjoying the NWA Wrestling rants you do the most. That's the show I most look forward to on 24/7."

Thanks, and it's also my favorite show to rant on, so it works out well for everyone.

Flair putting people over

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Nothing going on this week, so let's go back to the inbox...

Hey Scott,
long-time reader, first-time e-mailer. I was reading JD Dunn's review of the Great American Bash '91, and he says this about the Jim Herd/Ric Flair situation: "Jim Herd wanted Ric Flair to get an ear ring or dress up like a gladiator. Ric Flair wanted dignity. The two simply couldn't co-exist, so Herd demanded Flair drop the title to Lex Luger. Flair refused because he thought Luger wasn't good enough to carry the company, so Herd stripped Flair of the title and sent him packing up to Titanland." If I remember correctly, wasn't Flair one of the people who was very critical of Bret Hart for not laying down for Michaels in Montreal because Bret was asked to do the job and thus should have done it? Maybe I'm not getting/understanding the whole story here, as I hadn't know about this earlier Flair stuff before, but after reading JD's summary of Herd/Flair, it seems Flair is a hypocrite to call anybody out after that, stupid as the earring/gladiator thing and the request to job to Luger may have been. Your thoughts?

The 1991 situation was a bit more complicated than that, as Flair's contract was expiring and Herd was going to lowball him and turn him into a midcarder.  And the belt was going to move to Windham, not Luger, so technically Flair never refused to put Luger over.  Back in the glory years of 88-90, though, Flair absolutely refused to put Luger over several times.  I haven't heard anything from him specifically about Bret (it's usually Bret talking about Flair) but absolutely I'd call him a hypocrite if he said that Bret should have dropped the belt when asked.

The funny thing thinking about this stuff these days is that the current belts are pretty much worthless anyway.  Could you imagine someone leaving the WWE today because they were asked to drop one of the 14 versions of the World title out there?  MARK HENRY won a damn World title!

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - August 30 1986

- This is an important date for me, because this would be my 12th birthday, which resulted in my parents renting Wrestlemania 2 for the party and turning me into a lifelong fan. I started watching NWA's Worldwide Wrestling in syndication soon after, with the first show I ever saw being the one where Magnum TA's career-ending car accident was announced, so we're getting pretty close to that point now.

- Your hosts are Tony & David, with unsolicited help from Jim Cornette. They announce that Wahoo has beaten Tully Blanchard to win the National title, and that belt comes to the end of the line via the Nikita Koloff tour of destruction a month after this.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - August 23 1986

- Your hosts are Tony & David, with assistance from Jim Cornette.

- Sad news to start, as the Rock N Roll Express have regained the World tag titles from the Midnight Express, and America mourns as Nikita Koloff has taken the US title home to Moscow.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for The 8 Days of Goldberg

- This is kind of a goofy Christmas theme on 24/7, as we're celebrating Hanukkah with Goldberg matches. But I haven't done a few of them, so let's line 'em up…

Back to Starrcade

Monday, December 15th, 2008

I didnt agree with most of the matches on the Starrcade set but I was wondering the matches that You would have included and which one you would kick off

Just off the top of my head, I can tell you that these matches didn't need to be there, or at least not as high as they were:

- Dusty & Sting v. The Road Warriors

- Eddie Guerrero v. Dean Malenko

- Midnights v. Rock N Roll Express scaffold match

- Three Count v. Jung Dragons ladder match

As for what SHOULD have been there...

- Ric Flair v. Ron Garvin, from Starrcade '87.  Yeah, I give it grief, but it was a better match than all of the above and one of the big moments for both guys.

- Ricky Steamboat v. Tully Blanchard from Starrcade '84.  Hell of a match that's forgotten by the current fanbase just because it's not pimped as a classic on DVD releases.

- Rock N Roll Express v. The Andersons from Starrcade '86.  I love this match more every time I watch it.  The perfect storm of the bully heels and the pretty babyfaces.

- Midnight Express v. Midnight Express from Starrcade '88.  A great and historic match that means nothing to current fans.

- Rick Steiner v. Mike Rotundo from Starrcade '88.  Another great match that was a HUGE deal at the time but grew to mean nothing once Steiner became a tag team star and Rotundo became a taxman.

That being said, I understand how the voting worked and what the mindset was, so I'm not blaming fans for not knowing what a shitty match they voted for in a couple of cases.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - August 16 1986

- They seem to be sneaking more SMW stuff into the channel, with a clip before this show and a clip of Rock N Roll Express v. Gangstas in the Shorties section, and yet still no weekly TV show. Where's the Smoky Mountain love, WWE 24/7 Classics on Demand?

- Hosted by Tony and David and Jim F'n Cornette.
