The Art of the Squash

Monday, April 12th, 2010

So I'm watching a few minutes of NXT last week and while the concept isn't the worst thing I've ever heard the execution is very poor.

They are taking mostly developmental talent (and of course more experienced guys like Danielson) and making them wrestle each other in fairly boring contests.

Retro Repost: Bret Hart DVD

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

(Apparently this Bret Hart guy is all the rage right now among the kids, so here’s a repost of the DVD rant from 2004, with some formatting and spelling errors fixed)

The SmarK DVD Rant for Bret Hart: The Best There Is, The Best There Was, and The Best There Ever Will Be.

So here's how this is gonna work -- I've of course been hit by endless requests for this DVD, but didn't get the DVD until recently. I managed to watch the documentary portion previously and posted thoughts to the blog, but everyone wanted rants for the matches included, too, and I didn't really feel like going back to take notes on the documentary portion to do the entire DVD set. So the documentary portion is going to be a guest rant by longtime blog contributor and friend of mine Princess, who covered most of what I would have written about it anyway, and then we'll hit the matches with fresh rants for stuff I haven't done before or haven't done in a long time. For time reasons and for reasons of efficiency, I copied stuff where my opinions haven't changed or where an updated version wasn't going to be different enough to warrant a redo.

Tag Tournament Quarterfinals – RESULTS!

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Sorry if this is seeming compressed, but voting totals are pretty consistent each time and we have decisive winners, so I’m wrapping this up so we can move on and get it done with.  I will say, two of these results shocked me.

- The Steiner Brothers (59%) take out the Road Warriors (41%) in something of an upset, as I was thinking that the Roadies would have cruised to victory in the end.  But then this match actually happened and the Steiners won, so maybe that influenced things.

- In another mild upset, Edge & Christian (59%) defeat the Midnight Express (41%), as I had thought that E&C’s huge run was coming to an end and we were headed to an all-NWA final.  Guess not.

- The Hart Foundation (78%) crushed the Hollywood Blondes (22%) in a result that I completely agree with.  I’m as big of a Blondes fan as anyone, but they were in far over their heads at this point.

- The British Bulldogs (65%) beat the Guerreros (35%) to end the other flukey run of the tournament.  I should not that vote totals were 50% higher on this one than any other match of this bracket, which might mean someone was trying to powervote and screw with the totals.  However, I’ve been monitoring the voting all day and the Bulldogs were clearly the winners the whole time even without another 300 votes on their side, so it didn’t affect anything.

Tag tournament round one – RESULTS!

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

There were some REALLY close votes in this round, as you’d expect by this point, but you probably wouldn’t expect which matches were so close.

Eddie Gilbert Division Quarterfinals: RESULTS!

Friday, November 6th, 2009

OK, these are all pretty decisive, so I’m calling them now so we can move on.

- Edge & Christian (92%) steamroll the Quebecers (8%) in the Battle of Canada, where the promos were probably awesome.

- The Outsiders (68%) beat the New Age Outlaws (32%) in the battle to win HHH’s love, as Kevin Nash no-sells the belt shot and powerbombs Billy Gunn to win it.

- The Megapowers (83%) beat the Koloffs (17%) in an 80s dream match that ended up being little more than a squash.  Big boot and legdrop for Uncle Ivan finish this one off, although you have to wonder how much longer Hogan & Savage can work together.

- The Midnight Express (54%) beat Miz & Morrison (46%) in a wonky result because someone was power-voting for M&M, which completely skewed the numbers to the point where I had to turn off the honor system and restrict voting.  More realistically the numbers would have been about 80%-20% in favor of the Midnights, but either way they advance.

So for our semi-finals (which I think everyone already predicted) we have:

- Edge & Christian v. The Outsiders

- The Megapowers v. The Midnight Express

That’s gonna be some interesting voting right there.

Dream Tag Team tournament: Round one begins!

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

OK, after taking into account requests in the previous thread, I’ve subbed in a few popular choices and subbed out a few unpopular ones (mainly those with Paul Roma in them, oddly enough) and after a random seeding process, we now have a field of 64 teams.

So here’s how it’s going to work:  I’ve organized the tournament into four divisions:  The Jim Crockett Division, The Eddie Gilbert Division, The Lou Thesz Division and the Eddie Guerrero Division.  Each division has eight first round matchups, and we will proceed through each division until there’s a winner of each one.  Then it’s a four-team tournament to crown the ultimate tag team of all-time!

Seedings are entirely arbitrary and meaningless, so don’t get offended because Demolition and the Road Warriors ended up so close together, for instance.

I decided to go with three options:  You can pick either team to win, or you can pick a draw if you’re playing armchair booker and think it would end up that way.  You can use whatever criteria you want to choose your winner, whether it be the team that’s your favorite, the team you think would be booked to win, the team that would win a real fight, I don’t care.

The official pairings follow after the break, and then we’ll begin with the Jim Crockett Division tonight!

Scott’s Stupid Dream Tag Team tournament: The Field

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

OK, so after giving this about 5 minutes of total thought, here’s my 64 team field for the first annual Scott’s Stupid Dream Tag Team Tournament.  This is not in any particular order, it’s just 64 teams I could think of off the top of my head who are pretty cool and probably deserve slots here.  If there’s any more deserving you can think of, now is the time to nominate them.  I’m just gonna end up randomly seeding them and letting people vote in a poll to determine the winner.  The criteria will be entirely up to you.  Vote for your favorite, the ones who were the best workers, the ones you’d think would win a real fight, whatever.

The nominated teams:

Dream tag matches

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Hey Scott,

If everyone were in their primes, what do you think would be the better match:

Midnight Express vs. Hart Foundation or Brittish Bulldogs vs. Steiner Brothers?

Well I can certainly tell you what the stiffer match would be.

I think heel Midnights v. babyface Harts from 1990ish would have been the best bet for match quality.  The Steiners could be hit or miss with similar-styled teams and the Bulldogs were dependent on Dynamite’s mood and injuries, so you never knew what you were getting.  The Harts and Midnights both knew the formula inside out and you could be guaranteed a ***1/2 match just by them going through the motions, so I’m thinking that’s the better choice.

Maybe for fun we’ll do a big “fantasy tag team tournament” deal so people can debate this topic more in depth.
