MICHAEL'S IMPACT REVIEW #13

MARCH 29, 2010

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - THE IMPACT ZONE

-  Well, let me give you a quick look on how I received Wrestlemania 26.  Of the 9 matches I knew about, I picked 7 correct, only getting Punk and Kofi in the MITB wrong.  MizShow vs. Morrison/Truth could have been on the pre-show.  Last year's match for the Unified belts would have been well received on pay per view.  Orton is on fire.  I don't know where they take it from here, unless you want to see Orton and Cena face off for the belt, AGAIN.  Money in the Bank kinda left me with a "it was ok" feeling.  Swagger could not have been anyone's pick.  Triple H and Sheamus literally put me to sleep.  Thank God for DVR.  Same goes for Rey and Punk.  The Bret hart match was about as good as it could go.  Unfortunately it looked like DH Smith and Tyson Kidd were laying those shots in pretty hard.  Jericho and Edge got my attention the last five minutes of the match.  They could have stolen the show if they could have gone longer....BUT...the Diva's tag match was HORRIFIC!!!!!!  There is your 15 extra minutes wasted with that horseshit.  Seriously, Eddie Guerrero had to be dizzy from spinning in his grave after watching his wife point to the sky before botching her "hog splash".  In my opinion, John Cena and Batista stole the show.  That's right, I said it.  For two guys that aren't very "net friendly" performers, they put on a helluva match,  My moment that I will take away with me this year was watching Cena standing with the "We Hate Cena" crowd.  I love it.  As for the main event, HBK and Taker put on about as good of a match as they could.  They couldn't top last year's match unless they were both covered in blood and went about 45 minutes.  Interestingly enough, I do believe that this match was the same exact time as the Flair/HBK match from WM24.  I could be wrong, but exactly 24 minutes sticks out in my head for some reason.  Oh yeah, Impact is on tonight...LET'S CROSS THE LINE!!!

Scott’s Stupid Dream Tag Team tournament: The Field

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

OK, so after giving this about 5 minutes of total thought, here’s my 64 team field for the first annual Scott’s Stupid Dream Tag Team Tournament.  This is not in any particular order, it’s just 64 teams I could think of off the top of my head who are pretty cool and probably deserve slots here.  If there’s any more deserving you can think of, now is the time to nominate them.  I’m just gonna end up randomly seeding them and letting people vote in a poll to determine the winner.  The criteria will be entirely up to you.  Vote for your favorite, the ones who were the best workers, the ones you’d think would win a real fight, whatever.

The nominated teams:

Wrestlemania Repost Countdown: 1

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

The SmarK Retro Rant ' Wrestlemania 1 (Director's Cut)

- Yes, it's another redo of a rant that sucked first time around due to being 5 years ago and all.

- This is from the 'Collection' set of Wrestlemanias released in 1997, and thus the show is complete and uncut from the original broadcast, unlike the hacked up Coliseum version that I used the first time around. Unfortunately, the actual quality of the tapes is about as low as humanly possible ' recorded in EP and seemingly as fragile as Scotch tape with magnetic filings on them. I haven't even watched this before and it's already threatening to fall apart.

Wrestlemania Repost Countdown: 2

Monday, March 30th, 2009

And that rhymes with NEW, as in new version.

The SmarK Retro Rant for WWF Wrestlemania 2

- So while reading over the old WM rants in preparation for the reposts, I couldn't help but notice that my original rant for this show (from the Coliseum video version) was due for a redo. So here's the full PPV version, which comes from the VHS releases that came out in 97 or so. Good thing: Completely uncut PPV version complete with ORIGINAL MUSIC. Bad thing: It was recorded in EP mode on low quality tape, so I made sure to only watch it one time, when I recorded it to DVD. Yeah, I could just spring for the Anthology versions, but they'd probably overdub Nikolai Volkoff singing the Russian anthem because they couldn't afford the music rights. The match lengths appear to be the same, but the interview order is all switched around from the Coliseum video. Anyway, for those who haven't heard the story a million times, this was the very first wrestling show I ever watched by my own choice, as we rented it for my 12th birthday because the other kids were into wrestling, and then I checked out the weekly TV show as a result and Paul Orndorff like, totally turned on Hulk Hogan, and I was like "Um yeah, I'm watching this for the next 20 years or so unless it really starts to suck or too many people die."

The SmarK Retro Re-Rant for Wrestlemania III: Championship Edition

- This is another one that needed a redo, and with the "digitally remastered" version playing on 24/7 right now, this is as good a time as any. This version has pop-up video facts and cut-in interviews with the people involved, which is pretty neat and is something lacking on their DVD releases, especially historical ones. And hey, I work cheap and would gladly do text commentaries for all their catalogue releases in my spare time. At any rate, this is the complete PPV version, rather than the more briskly-edited Coliseum version most of us old farts are more familiar with.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for Houston Show – November 26 1986

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for Houston Show - November 26 1986

- So unfortunately the countdown to the end begins here, as Sasktel will be dropping WWE 24/7 after April, which means I'll have to switch to the online version instead.

- Taped from Houston, TX. I guess this ties into Wrestlemania 25?

- Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Killer Ken Resnick. For a minute I was terrified it was gonna be another Duke Doherty show.

The SmarK Retro Rant for WWF Wrestlemania X-7

The SmarK Retro Rant for WWF Wrestlemania X-7

- Live from Houston, TX

- Your hosts are Jim Ross & Paul Heyman

- So this is it, the peak of North American wrestling and the point from which you can draw a clear line downwards again, quality-wise. This is the start of the current "Stadium show Wrestlemania" format, as well as the four hour format. After the show myself and many others called it the greatest PPV of all-time, but does it hold up 8 years later? Note for those wondering: This show is coming up on 24/7 next week, but I'd rather watch the unedited DVD version.
