WCW Still Sucks

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Hey Scott,

Been reading your board in regards to what everyone blames the death of WCW on, and wanted to connect to the man himself (you) for my thoughts. People like to blame Starcade 97 & the Finger Poke of Doom, and they are right, those things definately killed interest. But isn't just the lousy, arrogent, booking of Nitro the real thing to blame. I mean somewhere in 97 they got very over-confident and began airing never-ending Hogan masturbation promos w/ no real storytelling, just biding their time till Sting vs Hogan. Then in 98 there was some solid (questionable) effort. I mean they took a risk & split up the NWO & began building up Goldberg, with the DDP/Raven feud in the undercard. But then that summer the programming got really bad. The Warrior w/ his magic smoke & mirrors? Jay Leno/NWO Night Cap w/ Bischoff? And then after the poke of doom came the worst of all...The No Limit Soldiers. I mean instead of blaming one stupid incident, shouldn't we just blame it on years of bad TV?

There are a million things you can blame it on.  The years of bad TV certainly contributed as much as anything else, but TV is easy to turn around in a few weeks.  Killing PPV off?  That’s tough to come back from.

“What If” Day Continues

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

If you're still looking for discussion-worthy questions, here's one my friends and I knocked around on one of our road trips.
The usual "What If" questions are things like, "What if Vince hadn't gotten ahold of Hulk Hogan?" or "What if there had been no ECW as a template for Attitude?", but my question is, What if there had been no Eric Bischoff?
What if after the AWA folded, Eric just shrugged his shoulders and went off on another business venture?  From most accounts, the word is Tony Schiavone may have been next in line to take a whack at the VP position, so how might have history played out differently?  The nWo, and its effect on wrestling, is a big point, but others to consider....
- Would Hogan have signed with WCW?
- Would Nitro have existed?
- Would the luchadors gotten a foothold, however small, in US wrestling?
- What about workers overlooked by Vince like Benoit, Guerrero, Malenko, Goldberg, and others?
Discuss at your leisure, good sir

It’s not like Bischoff was the all-powerful dictator of WCW, there were other people involved in the decision making as well.  Getting Nitro was huge, no doubt, and I don’t think Schiavone would have gotten Hogan.  It probably would have just proceeded along the same line it was at the time, remained niche programming on TBS with a booking committee and Dusty getting power every couple of years, and still be around today because it wouldn’t have been losing millions in 2001.

So I guess the question becomes:  Was Bischoff good or bad for the business in the big picture?  I sure as fuck would like to still have WCW around today, even just doing 1.0 ratings on Saturday afternoons.

“Getting Lugered”

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Here’s a really long and good article from reader, all about getting your push killed through no fault of your own.

Hey Scott, Bill Chase from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada here.  Been a fan since I was 4, I'm now 27.  Here's something I put together recently, I hope you enjoy.

Lugered, def:
(1) An invented wrestling term, where someone is hyped up so big for a major title win, and then it doesen't happen derailing momentum to epic amounts of failure.
(2) Derived from wrestler, Lex Luger.
(3) Triple H has "Lugered" more people than anyone.

Goldberg

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Hey Scott,
I'd love to hear what your opinion is about the story regarding Goldberg's potential return to wrestling. Obviously his initial WWE run was completely undermined by Triple H, but do you think Bill Goldberg still has anything to offer to Professional Wrestling in 2010? Personally I'd love to see him come back, even in just a limited capacity. I think there's some great potential in feuds with Jericho, Cena, Undertaker, and Batista. Goldberg may not have been a workhorse in the ring, but he certainly did seem to offer a unique level of charisma, and despite his last run in WWE, still has somewhat of an aura about him similar to Ultimate Warrior I think.

He’s not coming back to wrestle, he’s just coming back to get HOF’d and be in videogames.  He’s still got more money than God thanks to his WCW deal and smart investing, so now it’s just a matter of padding his bank account ala Bret Hart, I’m pretty sure.  That and WWE making sure TNA can’t do anything with him.

MICHAEL'S IMPACT REVIEW #12

MARCH 22, 2010

THE IMPACT ZONE - ORLANDO, FLORIDA

-  So, I'm re-reading Ric Flair's book.  I get to the point about his "phantom" title change in the Caribbean in the early 80's.  He wrestled some guy I have never heard of that hails by the name of Jack Teneno.  I was intrigued by the whole story and now I am searching high and low for any footage of the match or re-match.  Does it exist?  I checked YouTube and all I got was a 30 second video of Teneno hitting the ugliest piledriver on Flair I have ever seen and celebrating the win.  If anyone knows where I can find this "gem" leave a link in the comments section.  I am riveted.  Let's cross the line.

One of the great one-match cards. Sadly I don't even do the one match that everyone remembers. I had it at ***** too in case you were wondering...even though their match at the Survivor Series was better.

Sting v. DDP

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

I stumbled upon Sting vs. DDP circa Nitro shortly after Spring Stampede 99 - awesome match right? Link: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRjAsdlwPU4&feature=related>  Dub Cee Dub was still doing fine at this point I believe - Spring Stampede 99 was a HOT show.  I thought DDP was a great white trash/ cheating/ heel champion and I don't think I'm alone.  The Mach (Savage) was still on hiatus and on his way back.  DDP should have kept the title until Mach came back and they could have re-ignited their '98 feud and Mach would have came away with the belt - AND THAT would have been the last time anyone over 40 held said belt - because Goldberg was on HIS way back - Macho could of held on to the title until he and Goldberg had it out - and I mean had it out- perfect scenario - WM VII style - they could do a little revamp of the Warrior and Mach battle because Goldberg had that superman aura about him.  The point of all this - I declare that end of WCW TRULY started NOT with Hogan/Sting Starcade, NOT with the finger poke of doom, BUT with lazy face world champion Nash.

That is a hell of a match right there.  They were also nuts for doing that double switch on the same show, though, and stuff like that killed them just as surely as the Fingerpoke or anything else did.  It’s really not fair to just pin it on Nash.
