Hey, it’s a Four Horsemen quiz.  I got 14/15 (counting two bonus answers) and felt kind of stupid having missed one of my favorite targets of vitriol.

Awesome!

Most disappointing ending to an angle thread would be awesome.

Or it could be disappointing.

My pick:  The Four Horsemen in 1988.  They’re set up as unstoppable heels and you think something big is coming, but then they all just kind of split apart and Windham loses the US title and leaves the promotion.

Wrestlemania Main Events: Wrestlemania XI

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Here's what we call a transitional card as Vince officially went from the class stars of the 80s and 90s to a new group. Diesel, who never wrestled at Wrestlemania before, goes straight to the top of card against rising star Shawn Michaels. Bret Hart, Lex Luger and Yokozuna last year's Main Eventers, were shuttered in the undercard with Yoko making a surprise return to the ring as Owen Hart's special tag partner.

In hindsight maybe WWF would have been better off having Diesel face HBK at the Royal Rumble and getting Hart here and shuttering HBK and Luger into a feud to keep things interesting on the undercard. But I don't think Hart wanted to lay down for Diesel so he got punished with a match against Bob Backlund, who was grossly entertaining on promos but not exactly what the fans wanted to see in the ring.

Anyway, Vince looked at the card and didn't really like it so he went into his bag of crazy ideas again and have former NFL star Lawrence Taylor a healthy chunk of change to close out the show. With WCW prepared to make a legitimate charge at the WWF with many of its former stars, Vince felt like he needed to roll the dice. And while many of us were expecting disaster, the final two matches on the card delivered better than many could have expected.

Enjoy.

Benoit in 2000

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Something I would like your opinion on: Given that it's been revealed after the fact that Kevin Sullivan and company, were planning on Chris Benoit only having the WCW World Championship belt for a short time, due to Sullivan wanting to get the belt on Sid ASAP and have Sid basically beat everyone in WCW in order to build up Sid Vs Golberg once Golberg came back from his injury, why couldn't they have done the same with Benoit?
They could have had Benoit as the big heal champion, complete with dissolving the NWO and bringing back the Four Horsemen with Flair as Benoit's manager and Malenko/Guerrero/Saturn as the other members of the Horsemen. Flair as a manager could have negated the issue of Benoit needing someone to do his interviews for him and I'm pretty sure Benoit/Golberg could have made for a decent enough feud to keep the company going in 2000.
Have Hogan, Nash, Hall, Sid, Jarret lose to Benoit to get him over as champion and maybe even go the "retirement" angle of Benoit "crippling" them after he beats them, to get them off canvas in the event they threw a hissy fit after losing. Not to mention pushing Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. as challengers as well. And since Benoit and Golberg, IIRC, had never fought before, there would be some nice hype for that dream match of sorts.
Given everything that happened, Benoit as the company's top heel could have been gold. Same with the return of the Four Horsemen as uber-heels, as they would have had WAY more credibility than a third-rate retred of the New World Order. Granted, given how things were at the time when Benoit won the belt, you'd have to do some major league cosmic reset button pushing to move things into alignment, but it would have worked out quite well for them and kept WCW relevant.

The thing is, the damage was done.  There was nothing they were going to be able to do that was going to undo what happened in 1999, and by the end of the year the company was dead no matter what anyway, so it’s all rather pointless to speculate about.  Benoit in a promotion with Kevin Sullivan as booker was never going to get a fair chance as champion.  Frankly at that point it wouldn’t have been fair to him to put that on his shoulders anyway.

Monday Night Wars

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Just finished watching the Monday Night Wars DVD over the net.  Not their best or worst DVD outing, but some stuff had me yelling at my monitor.  When Vince talks about how in business he tried to ONLY help himself and not hurt others, or when even Mick Foley spouts that it was mean of Bischoff to try to put WWE out of business and take food out of their families mouths.............WTMF???!!  If I'm not mistaken, part of Vince's building his mega-corp was putting all the territories outta business by any means necessary.  I suppose the old saying "History is written by the winners" may be the truest statement ever.  Could you re-post your review of this DVD cause I'd love to read it.

Sho nuff.

The SmarK Rant for The Monday Night War DVD

- Here’s one that I never thought I’d see in a million years. Well, until 2001, but still. And now we have it all distilled down to one DVD, presented through the eyes of the winners. Well, that’s war for ya.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - October 25 1986

- So this is the last rant on World Championship Wretling before 24/7 goes away, and in a sad bit of synchronicity, this is the show where we learn of Magnum TA's fate.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - October 11 1986

- God, it's been a lean month for content thus far on WWE 24/7, and with only a few updates this week and a 33-minute episode of WCW at that, there's not gonna be much new stuff from me, either. In case you were wondering.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - October 4 1986

- Your hosts are Tony & David. This is likely taped before the Omni show with the US tag title tournament they've been hyping for weeks, so no mention of the results or even the show here.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - August 30 1986

- This is an important date for me, because this would be my 12th birthday, which resulted in my parents renting Wrestlemania 2 for the party and turning me into a lifelong fan. I started watching NWA's Worldwide Wrestling in syndication soon after, with the first show I ever saw being the one where Magnum TA's career-ending car accident was announced, so we're getting pretty close to that point now.

- Your hosts are Tony & David, with unsolicited help from Jim Cornette. They announce that Wahoo has beaten Tully Blanchard to win the National title, and that belt comes to the end of the line via the Nikita Koloff tour of destruction a month after this.

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for World Championship Wrestling - August 16 1986

- They seem to be sneaking more SMW stuff into the channel, with a clip before this show and a clip of Rock N Roll Express v. Gangstas in the Shorties section, and yet still no weekly TV show. Where's the Smoky Mountain love, WWE 24/7 Classics on Demand?

- Hosted by Tony and David and Jim F'n Cornette.
