WWE Fatal 4 Way 2010

The SmarK DVD Rant for WWE Fatal 4-Way 2010

I should point out that the cover of the DVD is one giant spoiler, in case you're going in not wanting to know who wins the title matches. Not having sampled any of the WWE DVD releases in the HD era yet, I'm relieved to see that they look fabulous and finally take full advantage of DVD's audio capabilities by offering true 5.1 surround like on the original HD broadcasts.

Live from Long Island, NY.

Your hosts are Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler & Matt Striker

The SmarK DVD Rant – TV on DVD

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

I get a lot of DVDs sent to me for review.  Like more than can I probably deal with in any kind of reasonable timeframe.  It makes me feel bad because I’ve had a very hectic couple of months and haven’t had a chance to give them any kind of fair review.  Basically we’ve been in the process of buying our first house and pretty much everything that could have possibly gone wrong did so.  But it’s all good and now we’re all moved in and I’ve got a new Blu Ray player and plasma TV in my man cave.  But I’ve still got a pile of DVDs that have gone unreviewed, so here’s quick reviews of as many as I can squeeze into 1000 words or so.  No connecting thread this time, I just want to try to work through my writer’s block and get back on the horse again.

Breaking DVD News!

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Benoit's on the new Elimination Chamber DVD- the match he was in on the New Year's Revolution PPV on 1/9/2005. By my count, this is the first WWE DVD with Benoit since the Ladder Match DVD (which, of course, predated the horrible double murder/suicide). Thought you'd find this interesting.

Holy shit, there’s an Elimination Chamber DVD?  THAT’S gonna get boring to watch after the first hour of it.

Oh, wait, the other thing.  They still have time to take that match off the DVD, so don’t count on seeing it there.  Benoit’s too heavily involved to just edit out (he’s in for about half an hour) but maybe they can digitally replace him with William Regal or something.

Oh, that wacky Martha…

Hi Scott,
I know this issue hits close to home. That's why I'd like to defer to you for comment.

Thanks,

Martha’s a bit of a nutjob to say the least and this seems like a pretty clear money grab on her part, but I kind of see her point.  WWE could have very easily just done another Bret Hart set to cash in on his recent appearances rather than poking a stick at the angry bear that is the Hart family in general.  WWE really can’t keep denying responsibility for Owen’s death while attempting to make money off his name without looking more than a little sleazy.  That being said, I hope they cut her a cheque to shut her up and then put Owen into the Hall of Fame next year, or else we might have another Benoit situation on our hands where we never get to see Owen’s matches again.

DVD Wish List

Monday, June 7th, 2010

So in talking about the Hart and Soul DVD, there have been several complaints about match selection and the documentary itself.  I was curious what DVD sets you would like to see released, both those that are possible or probable and those that are just a dream.  For me I would love to see a Kurt Angle set, a Chris Jericho set, a Sting set, a Brock Lesnar set, and more sets for Austin, Rock, and Bret Hart.  Seeing any of these at some point wouldn't surprise me.  As for my pipe dream sets, I would love to see a Dean Malenko set, Scott Hall set, Greg Valentine, Tito Santanna, Don Muraco, Nick Bockwinkel, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, and a Raven set that covers WCW, WWF, ECW, and the indies.  Doubtful on any of these due to low sales probability and or bad blood.  So what's on your wish list?

I like the idea of “Best of RAW season 1 & 2” and stuff like that, actually.  That being said, I wish they’d utilize the library more.  A Clash of the Champions DVD is still a must, I think.  I’d love to see random compilations of the territories as well, to give newer fans an overview of what desperately scanning the satellite dish used to be like.  Instead of the “life and death” style World Class set, why not just a “Best of World Class” set showcasing 9 hours of what made the promotion great at times?  Or “Best of Memphis” or “Best of Florida” and the like?  Not everything has to be a dramatic documentary, as the SNME set showed.  Sometimes there’s still a market for the type of old-school compilations that people used to go out of their way to trade.  I mean, I love Bret Hart and Ric Flair, but 9 hours gets a bit tedious when you’re watching the same person over that length of time.

The SmarK DVD Rant for Hart & Soul: The Hart Family Anthology

I'm sure my lifelong fascination with the Hart family needs no introduction, and in particular the Bret Hart DVD was one of my favorite sets ever put out by WWE. This is a sequel of sorts, focusing on the entire family rather than just Bret.

Copyright Violations Can Be Pretty Awesome

Scott,
A YoUTube DVD collector mentioned this guy on IOffer who mskes some very interesting looking comps
http://www.ioffer.com/selling/heatermania
I haven't bought anything from him so I can't vouch for him myself, but here's the YouTube channel of the guy who mentioned him- he seems happy with the quality of what he's ordered.
http://www.youtube.com/user/AboveAverageMuta
I thought you might find one or two titles at least worth reviewing (and you wouldn't have to mention where you got them from in the rants because obviously linking to a site that sells copyrighted material in the blog would be bad).
Basicly; it just looks like a lot of very cool comps that I'd love to read your reviews on. There's a Randy Savage Early Years comp in particular I think you'd like
http://www.ioffer.com/i/macho-man-randy-savage-the-early-years-3-disc-set-140008447

A very intriguing idea, to be sure, but I’m thinking WWE’s lawyers would shut this guy down in 10 seconds.  But then I’m old school; I don’t really advocate selling copyrighted material, only trading it.  I wish the WWE would do what this guy is doing, though.

Steamboat DVD Listing

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Hey Scott,
Don't know if you've seen this yet but they've finally released the match list for the upcoming Steamboat DVD.  There are a few repeats and once again we're denied the Savage/Steamboat Superstars Bell Match and given YET ANOTHER copy of Steamboat/Savage at Wrestlemania III, albeit this time with commentary.  Otherwise, this DVD looks pretty fucking sweet and hopefully it'll sell well enough to give us a sequel.

Looks about what I was expecting.  That’s neither a criticism nor an endorsement, it’s just what I was expecting.

MICHAEL'S RAW REVIEW - EPISODE 2
MAY 17, 2010
TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA

-  Tonight's RAW is commercial free.  Should be a little more entertaining to watch with matches going a little longer.  I know I will appreciate that.  As for Sacrifice, looks like a bunch of unanswered questions for Thursday night.  Why advertise Sting vs. Jarrett, build it up, waste time on TV, and then can't deliver when you know Sting has been injured for a month??!?!?   Blackhawks 1, Sharks 0.  I love it.  Cue the opening video.
