Here's what we call a transitional card as Vince officially went from the class stars of the 80s and 90s to a new group. Diesel, who never wrestled at Wrestlemania before, goes straight to the top of card against rising star Shawn Michaels. Bret Hart, Lex Luger and Yokozuna last year's Main Eventers, were shuttered in the undercard with Yoko making a surprise return to the ring as Owen Hart's special tag partner.
In hindsight maybe WWF would have been better off having Diesel face HBK at the Royal Rumble and getting Hart here and shuttering HBK and Luger into a feud to keep things interesting on the undercard. But I don't think Hart wanted to lay down for Diesel so he got punished with a match against Bob Backlund, who was grossly entertaining on promos but not exactly what the fans wanted to see in the ring.
Anyway, Vince looked at the card and didn't really like it so he went into his bag of crazy ideas again and have former NFL star Lawrence Taylor a healthy chunk of change to close out the show. With WCW prepared to make a legitimate charge at the WWF with many of its former stars, Vince felt like he needed to roll the dice. And while many of us were expecting disaster, the final two matches on the card delivered better than many could have expected.
Enjoy.

The Netcop Retro Rant for Royal Rumble 95
- Live from Tampa, FL.
- Your hosts are Mr. McMahon & The King
- Welcome to the great downward slide of the WWF, as this is the first of many financially disasterous PPVs featuring Kevin Nash as World champion and a cast of characters that no one gave a crap about.

The SmarK Retro Rant for WWF Royal Rumble 1994
- I'm stuck with the Anthology DVD version, which at least has much better video quality than my original VHS dub, so blame that for any inconsistencies with the original review. At least that means the full PPV version and not the Coliseum edit.
- Live from Providence, Rhode Island.
- Your hosts are Vince McMahon & Ted Dibiase. This actually now makes more sense to me given the rotating color commentators on RAW after the departure of Bobby Heenan. Back in the day, it was totally random to me because I only got to watch Superstars.

(Apparently this Bret Hart guy is all the rage right now among the kids, so here’s a repost of the DVD rant from 2004, with some formatting and spelling errors fixed)
The SmarK DVD Rant for Bret Hart: The Best There Is, The Best There Was, and The Best There Ever Will Be.
So here's how this is gonna work -- I've of course been hit by endless requests for this DVD, but didn't get the DVD until recently. I managed to watch the documentary portion previously and posted thoughts to the blog, but everyone wanted rants for the matches included, too, and I didn't really feel like going back to take notes on the documentary portion to do the entire DVD set. So the documentary portion is going to be a guest rant by longtime blog contributor and friend of mine Princess, who covered most of what I would have written about it anyway, and then we'll hit the matches with fresh rants for stuff I haven't done before or haven't done in a long time. For time reasons and for reasons of efficiency, I copied stuff where my opinions haven't changed or where an updated version wasn't going to be different enough to warrant a redo.
