Canadian Wrestler #3

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Here's the #3 Canadian wrestler of the modern era.  http://bit.ly/dbdyaU

Another tough one to think of a defining singles match. Lots of great stuff with Angle and Undertaker, but no 5-stars in my book.  Maybe Matt Hardy in the cage?

To be honest, Edge’s injuries have hampered him from hitting the levels he was looking to hit around 2002.  I’d call the hair v. hair match against Angle his best singles match, but he’s got a shit-ton of even better tag matches between 2000 and his huge solo push starting in 2004.  Benoit & Angle v. Edge & Mysterio in the Smackdown tag title finals was EPIC.

Nine time World champion is pretty ridiculous, though.

More ratings

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Scott:
I have a slightly different question about ratings.  Doesn't a cable ratings point in 2010 represent a fairly larger number of households than it did in, say, 1998?  Not only is the population larger, but cable saturation is more complete (hardly anyone in the US doesn't have cable or satellite). Maybe I am misremembering this, but I could have sworn that in the days of the original Monday Night wars was that each ratings point represented less than a million viewers (somewhere around 850,000), and of course now it's about 1.2 million.  I tried googling to see if I could get some numbers, but perhaps my googling skills are weak.  Anyway, if that is true, it would mean that viewership decline has not been quite so precipitous, even if still significant.

tvbythenumbers.com is your best friend for ratings geek heaven if you want to know about that stuff.

Anyway, the viewership drop by itself doesn’t matter so much because WWE isn’t an ad-driven property.  Advertisers won’t pay top dollar no matter what the viewership, so the revenue model has always been PPV conversion.  Really, WWE couldn’t care less (or shouldn’t) whether 8 million or 3 million people are watching their programming, as long as the same amount of people buy the PPV every month.  That’s the true test, and that’s why a Wrestlemania during the height of the Russo era could get less buys than most of them during the “down” period.

Ratings mysteries

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Hey Scott, I don't know if you answered this before or if it has been
answered in a thread, but how do the TV ratings work? People talk about
how back in the late 90's how WCW and WWF did a combined rating up in the
8 range for example. Is it possible for a quarter rating to represent the
same household for both shows? Say TNA did a 1.0 and WWE did a 3.5.
Combined, they would have a 4.5, but does that account for someone who
started the night watching iMPACT, but switched to Raw halfway through the
show? Thanks!

Yes, it’s absolutely possible for a rating to represent both shows, although Nielsen is so incredibly in-depth that they can literally track what people were watching by the second, so pretty much everything is factored in anyway.  So in your example, TNA gets a 1.0 and RAW gets a 3.5 and they’d be able to say “From 9:10 to 9:15, there was overlap of 40,000 people who were flipping between Ric Flair and Santino Marella”.  The general public doesn’t get those details because they’re paid enormous dump-trucks full of cash by the networks and they don’t share the numbers with just anyone, but the people who DO pay for the numbers get incredibly specific info.

To be honest, I gave up on this season of 24 after the first two nights because it was the same old same old, and it’s time to end it anyway.  Last season was a great rebound for the show, but Jack Bauer has served his country for long enough and he deserves to retire and teach his grandchild 14 different ways to kill a man with a Bic pen.

Wrestlemania Main Events: Wrestlemania 23

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Back-to-back Wrestlemanias without Roman Numerals.

Super hot stadium crowd in Detroit and a fresh matchup in the main event that wasn't the original plan but was far more acceptable to the IWC and wrestling fans in general. However, HBK-Cena was in a fight for match of the night honors.

Enjoy

Even though I think Strikeforce is a bit of a sinking ship, JR should totally try announcing or recruiting for them rather than going back to the humiliation of WWE again.

Apparently 1.0 for TNA was being generous and the actual number is 0.98.  Truly these are some genius people running things down in Orlando.

Wrestlemania Main Events: Wrestlemania 22

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Not as good of an undercard as WM 21, but both of the title matches were significantly better and a spirited Hardcore match makes this card a winner.

It also has the best Wrestlemania crowd ever and a display of why Southern girls kick the most ass.

Enjoy.

WM repost time

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

OK, so it’s that time of year again (I think, I’m not sure of the actual date of Wrestlemania.  If it’s the night after the UFC show on the 27th, sucks to be them because I’m fucking pumped for that UFC show)

Hang on, my parentheses got away from me there.

OK, so it’s that time of year again when I begin doing the WM reposts en masse, which raises the question:  Are there any left that need redoing particularly badly?  Here’s my running tally of what’s been done:

1:  Done multiple times, pretty much definitive now.

2:  Done recently, no desire to do it again.

3:  Done definitively off 24/7.

4:  I’ve said everything I want to say about this show.

5:  Done recently off 24/7.

6:  Done recently off the Anthology DVD.

7:  Ditto.

8:  Done multiple times.

9:  Done recently off the Anthology DVD.

10:  Possibly.

11:  Done shortly after Bigelow’s death.

12:  Done recently enough that I don’t think it needs a redo.

13:  Ditto.

14:  Ditto.

15:  My ultimate Russo hate-rant and I don’t want to ruin it by redoing it while calm.

16:  Done recently off the DVD.

17:  Did it last year.

18:  Possibly.

19-25:  All done in what I consider my “modern era” where my writing style matches up with how I write now and I probably don’t need to redo them.  Is there any desire for these shows?  Maybe 19, but definitely not anything later, I’d say.

So by my count, that’s maybes for 10 and 18, and maybe 19.

Thoughts?
