Michael’s RAW Recap

Michael's RAW Recap

February 8, 2010

Lafayette, Louisiana

- Thought I would try a Raw Recap tonight.  This won't be a regular thing, but I got bored and gonna shoot this thing to Scott.  If you are reading this, then it made the cut.  Enjoy!

-  Your hosts are Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole.

-  We start with a shot if the #99 AFLAC Car.  God that sounds soooo redneck.  Out pops Hornswoggle and he going BANANA!  Kelly Kelly is in the ring and introduces Carl Edwards to the ring with Bella twins.  Carl moonsaults off the top rope.  He is going for cheap pops by marking out to the Saints.  He talks about the upcoming Daytona 500.  He mentions Joey Lagano and Kyle Busch and the crowd boos.  He talks about his friend John Cena and the crowd pops again.  Out comes Sheamus.  Sheamus says he the Doubleya Doubleya E Schampyun and Edwards is a guest on his show.  Enter Christian.  Christian marks out to Edwards and says that NASCAR is getting big in Canada.  It is?  Christian makes fun of Sheamus' teeth, skin tone, and lameness.  Christian says he is a free agent in two weeks so he thought he would check out Raw as his next stop. Edwards likes the idea of a Christian-Sheamus match right now!  Get me a referee down here!!!!

1.  Sheamus vs. Christian

-  So Carl Edwards books this match on the fly and walks off with Bella twins a plenty.  Sheamus starts and throws down Christian.  Christian comes back with quick offense and goes up to the second rope.  He jumps off and Sheamus catches him in mid-air and slams him down hard.  Christian rolls to the outside and WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.  Back on Raw @ the 3:53 mark and Sheamus has Christian tied up.  Christian gets loose and kicks Sheamus in the face.  Sheamus tosses him back down and Christian locks onto the ropes.  Sheamus charges and Christian dumps him over the top rope.  AAAAND CHRISTIAN WILL FLY!!!!  Christian goes for Sheamus and Sheamus runs him into the post arm first.  Sheamus throws him back first into the barrier.  Back in and Sheamus drives a knee into Christian's arm.  Cover gets 2.  Sheamus works an arm behind Christian's back and puts a knee in his back.  Christian is pulled up and thrown into the corner.  Sheamus wrings the arm under the rope and Christian pops him in the mouth.  He goes up and nails a missile drop kick.  He slap Sheamus in the head .  High turning elbow and no cover.  Sheamus charges into a side kick and catches him in a Uranage.  Christian elbows out.  Christian runs in between the ropes and sets up for the Tornado DDT on Sheamus and gets 2.  KILLSWITCH attempted and Sheamus escapes.  He throws Christian into the corner and hits the JUMPING KICK to his face.  Sheamus nails the Razor's Edge on Christian and the will do it @ 9:41 for the win.  (Pretty good match from both men to kick off Raw.  Why have them face off is beyond me.  Both men moved smoothly through it liked they have wrestled each other 1000 times.  C+.)

-  Backstage Triple H watches in disdain.  In walks Shawn Michaels.  Michaels says he has been distracted with the whole Undertaker/Wrestlemania thing.  He is looking for the positive in this situation.  Shawn wants DX to be together as a team for the first time ever at Wrestlemania.  Triple H reminds him that he has qualified for the Elimination Chamber and will win it and go on as the champion at Wrestlemania.  Shawn says that it's all about Triple H now.  Coming up next "EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE" of Batista attacking John Cena after Raw went off the air last week.

-  Back on Raw we see the "Slam of the Week" with Bret Hart and Vince McMahon from last week.  Sooooooo....after last week, Batista returned to the arena to finish some unsettled business on John Cena.  He threw Cena into the post shoulder first and then into the post on the outside.  And then....A BATISTA BOMB ON THE STEEL STEPS IN THE RING!!!!  Why would they not show that on TV?

-  Backstage it's Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes.  Cody is whining about not beating Cena last week and qualifying for the Elimination Chamber.  DiBiase says he is better than Rhodes.  Enter Randy Orton and he asks DiBiase if he is better than him.  Orton says that tonight, Carl Edwards has booked Ted DiBiase against John Cena.  He then focuses on Cody and says he is not happy about what happened at the Royal Rumble.  So tonight it will be Cody Rhodes against Randy Orton.  Up next, it is the Unified Tag Team Titles on the line.

UNIFIED TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

2.  CM Punk & Luke Gallows (with Serena) vs.  Degeneration X vs.  The Miz & Big Show

-  Punk runs down the crowd for celebrating the Saints win by drinking.  Is Punk going for the Jesus look?  Punk points out Jared from Subway.  How is that guy still getting free shit?  Punk says people follow in his footsteps.  I wanna meet those people.  He wants Jared to be the Minister of Propaganda.  Jared refuses and Punk dispatches them to get Jared from Subway to make an example of him.  Out comes DX.  I dunno, I think I would have enjoyed that.

Melee ensues and we have no bell.  DX tosses the Miz out of the ring onto the other three men and WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK!!!!  Back and joined in progress as HBK chops Punk.  Punk comes back and hits the running knee and bulldog.  Cover gets 2.  Big Show comes in and beats on Punk and Michaels.  Show misses a charge and HHH comes in as well as Gallows.  HHH tells them both to suck it and Show drops HHH.  Show beats on Gallows and CHOPS him in the corner.  Show walks over and CHOPS HHH.  HHH comes back and hits the running knee on Show.  PEDIGREE attempt on Show and HHH gets back dropped over the top rope.  HHH landed on the leg bad!  Show swats at Gallows and he tumbles over to his corner and tags in Punk.  At the 2:04 mark, WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK!  Back on Raw at the 4:58 mark and Punk kicks Miz in the back hard.  Punk covers Miz and HHH for a pair of 2's.  Punk clamps down on HHH's knee.  HHH kicks free and Miz hammers away on him.  Miz beats HHH down in the corner and whips Punk right into a boot.  Then HHH almost takes Miz's head off.  Punk covers and gets 2.  Miz regains composure and hits the running lariat in the corner.  HHH grabs Miz on the outside and hits the spinebuster on the outside.  HBK is tagged in and hits the forearm on Punk.  Inverted atomic drop on Punk and a bodyslam.  HBK goes up top and hits a short flying elbow.  HBK tunes up the band,  Gallows takes out HBK and HHH dumps Gallows.  Punk attempts the GPS and SWEET CHIN MUSIC ON Punk.  Punk and Gallows are eliminated at the 8:25 mark.  Show comes in and drops HBK.  He talks shit to HBK while he chops Show.  Show drops him again.  Show clobbers HBK in the gut,  He chokes Michaels over the second rope.  Show steps on the ribs and walks over HBK.  Show hits HBK right in the stomach again.  HBK fights back and Show runs into a boot in the corner.  HBK meets him in the corner with a second boot.  But Show hits a back suplex and gets 2.  Miz tags in and kicks HBK low.  Miz hits a running kick to HBK's head and gets 2.  Miz clamps down on a chinlock.  HBK escapes and Miz hits a running neckbreaker.  Miz measures HBK for the SKULL CRUSHING FINALE and HBK kicks him away.  Show tags in and runs into SWEET CHIN MUSIC!!!  Show makes a tag and in comes HHH.  HHH misses a clothesline, but the Miz eats a knee,  HHH takes out Show.  HHH with a spinebuster, VINTAGE TRIPLE H!!!!!  HBK tags himself in and HHH turns around and asks why he did that??  Miz kicks HBK into HHH and rolls up HBK with a handful of trunks and @ 14:06, we have NEEEEEEEEEEEEW WWE UNIFIED TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS.  (Helluva match.  They kept a fast pace and slowed it down, with the Big Show laying in a lot of punishment.  Predictable finish though.  B-.)  After the match, Triple H stares in a pissed off manner at Michaels.  Michaels says to just forget it and walks out on Triple H.  Still to come on RAW, Cena vs. DiBiase and Rhodes vs. Orton.

-  Back on Raw and we see what just happened on before the break.  Josh Matthews is standing by with the new champions.  Big Show virtually blows Miz with kind words.  Miz says they should be called the Miz Show.  Show like Show Miz, kinda like Showbiz.  I love that!

-  We see the Elimination Chamber card, all 2 matches of it.  Backstage HBK is looking for Teddy Long.  Good to see Carlito gets 2 seconds of camera time.  HBK corners Teddy Long.  He wants to traded to Smackdown.  He doesn't care about DX.  He wants Long to take someone out of the Elimination Chamber and put him in.  Long refuses and HBK snaps.  Enter HHH and tries to talk sense into him.  HBK says his career is over and SUPERKICKS Teddy Long right into Carlito!  HBK walks off.  Nice.

3.  Jillian Hall vs. Gail Kim

-  Maryse is on commentary and calls Cole a "vintage nerd".  The whole vintage thing has gone too far.  In the ring Hall hammers away and goes to slam Kim.  Kim rolls over and sticks a boot to her neck and drops down.  That does it @ 0:55.  (Dud.)  Maryse comes in and mumbles something to Gail Kim in French.  She tells her good luck and they shake hands.

-  The 1st inductee in the class of 2010 WWE Hall of Fame is Ted DiBiase.  Interesting that Virgil gets more time on Raw tonight than Carlito.  I laugh out loud as Ted DiBiase walks into a jeweler to pick up his new Million Dollar Belt wearing a F'ing CAPE!  I forgot all about that!  Next up, Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton.  There should be blood, but there won't be.

-  Back on Raw, it's Jared and Carl Edwards.  In walks Santino.  He is wearing a new shirt that I might could buy.  Jared plugs Subway shamelessly.  Santino wants a match with Jack Swagger.  Edwards books it for Superstars.  In comes Kofi Kingston.  He has a suggestion for Edwards to make 6 matches for all the Elimination Chamber participants for next week.  Edwards wonders if he should leave the match ups up to next week's guest host:  JERRY SPRINGER!

4.  Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton (with Voices in his head)

-  Rhodes tries to apologize to start.  Orton slaps him repeatedly.  Rhodes slaps back and dropkicks Orton and gets a 2.  They angrily lock up and Orton pops Rhodes in the head.  Rhodes answers with a Russian legsweep for 2.  Orton lays Rhodes out on the ropes.  Orton kicks Cody in the chest and measures him with several shots in the corner.  Rhodes climbs up but gets pummeled.  Rhodes battles out of a superplex and misses a high cross body.  Orton "coils and poises to strike"  Sheamus crawls in and distracts Orton.  Rhodes grabs Orton and hits the CROSSROADS on Orton for the win @ 2:46.  (Interesting finish as they build towards some sort of Orton/Rhodes or Orton/DiBiase showdown.  Match itself garners a C.)  Sheamus comes back in and boot Orton right in the head.  Rhodes runs in and has a chair, Sheamus bails.

-  Let's watch Batista beat up John Cena from last week again.  Cause I am sure it has nothing to do with tonight's match.  John Cena walks towards the ring as his match with Ted DiBiase is NEXT!

-  Josh Matthews is standing by with Carl Edwards.  Edwards says next week, Sheamus will meet Randy Orton.  Ted DiBiase vs. Kofi Kingston.  Triple H vs. John Cena.  And of course, he has to crowbar in a "Gentlemen, start your engines!".

MAIN EVENT

5.  Ted DiBiase vs. John Cena

-  Cena attacks DiBiase and tosses him out, before the bell.  On the outside, Cena throws DiBiase upside down into the barrier.  STFU applied on the outside and DiBiase is tapping.  More officials make their way down to the ringside area and Cena grabs the mic.  (Dud.)

-  Cena didn't come to have a match, he came for Dave Batista.  He says that last week he came out to injure him, but Cena is still here.  Cena calls out Batista.  Will Batista come out?  Who knows?  Maybe we will find out after the break!!! Good grief.

-  Back on Raw and Cena is still talking smack.  He says that Batista should be scared.  He thinks Batista's attack was a business decision.  Cena thinks Vince McMahon is behind it all.  So if he isn't going to fight Batista, he wants to talk to Vince McMahon.  Out comes Vince McMahon, strutting and laughing.  Also, out with Vince is security.  Cena counts 10 security guards.  Cena says either Vince dismisses his security, or he will beat them all down.  Vince walks into the ring by himself.  Vince says they will do things man to man, but he is the SUPREME Alpha male.  He admits that he brought out Batista last week.  Vince says he screwed Bret again and has a great big laugh.  But he had nothing to do with Batista attacking Cena.  Vince thinks it is because Cena eliminated him in the Royal Rumble.  Or maybe because he doesn't like him.  Just like Vince hates Cena.  Cena says that everyone hates Vince because he is all about money.  Cena says that Vince has destroyed Batista because now Batista is all about the money.  Cena goes for a cheap pop with the Saints fan.  Cena says he does this, because he likes it.  Cena talked to Bret last week and Bret wants to wrestle another match at Wrestlemania.  He wants to wrestle Vince McMahon.  Vince says he doesn't want that.  Cena asks Vince is he about the money or about the moment.  Vince agrees to the match.  Cena tells him to tell Bret to his face that he accepts this match and Cena walks to the back.  Vince replays the video of last week's attack on Bret.  All of a sudden, in runs Bret Hart from the crowd and he attacks Vince.  Bret cleans house of security.  Vince walks up to the ramp and says there will be NO match at Wrestlemania.  He says that Bret deserves to be screwed.  Bret walks to the side of the entrance way and tears up equipment, while falling down in the process.  Bret comes to the announce table and tears it apart, just like Montreal in 1997.  He climbs in the ring.  I wonder if he will write WCW in the air, too.  Bret's music hits and he plays up to the crowd.  The screen fades as he says, "I'll get that son of a bitch".

Final Thoughts....

A very SOLID Raw tonight.  The Sheamus opener was great.  The Tag Title Match was fantastic.  The Orton-Legacy potential story lines are great, as well.  The only problem I had was it looked like they are over looking the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

I admit that I tuned in half-way on the match, but when I saw DX vs. ShowMIZ, I thought for sure The Miz was doing the J-O-B. So I was surprised when he won the match.

  2. nwa88 says:

By the way — why is it that multi-millionare Vince McMahon can’t get a decent haircut? He looks like Linda cuts it for him. Has it been this bad pretty much since the whole Donald Trump headshaving?

  3. nwa88 says:

The Shawn Michaels stuff is the best angle they have going for them right now and I love the slow burn of it all. The Ted Dibiase video was fun too and the opening angle was good as well.

The whole Bret Hart thing is trying my patience though, it seems like the whole angle is treading water. I keep waiting for it to “get good” but there is just no energy or chemistry between Vince and Bret, which is amazing given their history. Even with Cena out there, the crowd reaction seems very lukewarm to the whole thing. I know they are going in another direction with Shawn, but they should have kept Shawn in the angle in the first place, that’s where all the interest is for me. Now it’s basically a rehash of Vince/Hogan.

      100% agree.

1997 Bret was so interesting because he genuinely was bitter about what was going on. Now that everything is water under the bridge in real life… he can’t act or seem to emit any genuine emotion at all to the angle.

      • nwa88 says:

Yeah I agree with that, Bret just seems very flat. It’s no all his fault either though — It doesn’t help that Vince is doing his whole gravelly voiced “OH I SCREWED YOU… I SCREWED YOU AGAIN HA-HA!” bit so ridiculously over the top either, while Bret and John Cena just kinda grin at him. Nobody seems to have their heart in this at all, and it’s disappointing.

      • I felt a lot of emotion from him last week when he was tearing into Vince on the mic but I’m an admitted mark for Bret so I realize my inherent bias.

    • LannyPoffo says:

Very briefly after he lost to Orton last week, I was totally convinced that they’d have Michaels snap, turn into Awesome Evil Shawn, and fill the role that they ended up giving to Batista, “closure” be damned. That would’ve been sweet, and Cena/Bret vs. Michaels/Vince could’ve worked.

I liked Cena’s promo and all, but tonight the angle just seemed off to me. They set it up so perfectly for Bret’s music to hit after Cena left – the pop would’ve been titanic – and instead, they have that same “Bret gets screwed” highlight package play, followed by Bret weakly attacking McMahon from behind and then reenacting Montreal again by destroying equipment (and falling down in the process). I was more into this last week.

I’m actually newly intrigued by the Legacy angle, especially with Sheamus involved. Playing off of the old Tatanka-Luger angle as Orton tries to figure out which one sold out to Sheamus could be fun. Thank God that Russo isn’t writing this, in TNA Rhodes would’ve clocked Orton with the chair tonight and everything would be forgotten by next week,

      • LannyPoffo says:

Oh, and one other off-note from Cena’s promo: when citing WWE legends who wrestled for the love of wrestling and not the money, you might want to cite someone other than “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase

        • Barbarash says:

lol yeah I laughed at that… the one guy of all the guys he could of mentioned he speaks of the dude whose whole gimmick revolved around money.

        • flair4dagold says:

I hate Cena’s promos. No matter how hard I try to like them, they are the corniest, most over acted shit on tv.

I did laugh out loud at Big Show being all happy about winning and being treated as an equal, unlike the way Jericho treated him. Funny stuff.

The Bret and Shawn stuff, for me, is being done very well imo.

          • meka3000 says:

Personally I’d take Cena’s promo’s over somebody like Randy Orton and his dull monotone promo’s any day of the week.

On another note, I hope Sheamus gets the belt taken off him at EC so he gets sent back to the midcard where he belongs.

With all the non-heat he’s drawing you’d think he’d be going after the divas title.

  4. dannytreo2876 says:

I find it hilarious how awful the bret thing is becoming. Shocker, he can’t handle his side of it.

    • Comdukakis says:

you can set your clock to it folks.

      • Comdukakis says:

oh, just wanted to add, I didn’t actually watch Raw last night, so I have no idea whether Bret sucked or not. I’ve thought he’s been just fine previously, but I admit that this becoming about Cena and Batista has sucked the interest out of me.

    • nala310 says:

I agree, the whole Bret/Vince storyline is starting to get boring. Last week wasn’t too bad, but this week was lame. I have no interest in seeing Batista/Cena at Wrestlemania either. So this doesn’t make it any better.
Although the Shawn stuff is interesting, not sure which way they go with it. Shawn/HHH or Shawn/Taker at ‘Mania? Maybe triple threat? Although I think Orton/DiBiase/Rhodes will be the triple threat. I’ll be glad when the next PPV is done so we can get to the buildup for ‘Mania. Having a PPV between Rumble and ‘Mania is annoying, cause it gives them something to get through before ‘Mania. I’d rather they just build on Wrestlemania right after the Rumble and not have a PPV in February.

    • thebeast says:

Well you’re kind of in a fortunate position. The Bret/Vince segments keep closing the show so if you’re getting tired of it, just stop watching before the segment.

  5. LemonDropKid says:

If you count the unified tag titles as two titles still (which I do since they are represented by two sets of belts), is Miz the first ever simultaneous triple-title-holder in WWE/WWF? I know Lance Storm did it in WCW but I think that’s about it.

  6. TAFKA TVs Tim says:

For me, the problem with the Bret/Vince stuff is that it’s a real-life angle being dumbed down for the current ‘PG’ kayfabed world. We get stuff like Bret referencing the ‘WWE Universe’ in his first promo, Vince kicking Bret in the ‘guts’ (????), or vague mentions of him ’screwing’ Bret without actually referencing the events of 1997. Yeah, obviously they can’t come out and say ‘Vince changed the ending of a match that Bret was supposed to win’, but after years and years of watching ‘Mr. McMahon’ commit one heinous act after another I think the current audience needs to something more from the creative team if they’re expected to be emotionally invested. The stuff with Stu and the HoF was an interesting idea, but ultimately not enough to sell the angle as something truly unique and not just another ‘Vince vs. Wrestler X’ storyline rehash.

The biggest mistake is having Vince out there in full ‘Mr. McMahon’ mode, because it just kills whatever aura of realism that was left after the horrible three-week buildup to Bret’s ‘big return’. If he’d come out not as the bombastic billionaire but rather the same Vince we saw in the infamous ‘Bret screwed Bret’ interview and yet still cutting the same promos, the whole angle would be a lot more compelling than it is now. As we’ve seen in the past, Vince can be pretty damn scary and intimidating when he wants to be (the first Costas interview comes to mind), and when you’re trying play off real-life events and emotions that’s what needed to be effective. Otherwise, it’s just a cartoon character vs. an aging former star, and we’ve seen enough of that to last a lifetime. Plus, shoehorning Cena and Batista into the mix tells me that they don’t have nearly as much faith in this angle as they once did. Cena/Bret vs. Vince/Batista might be the way to go if Bret is still iffy from a physical standpoint, but talk about watering things down.

    • thebeast says:

Yeah I think I saw someone else saying something similar. In the past, fans wanted Austin, Rock, Michaels etc. to beat up the Mr. McMahon character. But in the case of Bret, they want him to beat up Vince.

I think the angle’s fine and I’m enjoying it – it’s definitely as good as it can be in the PG era and Bret having a number of physical limitations. But yeah, a healthy Bret feuding with Vince in 2000/2001 of course would have been better.

  7. chaos_disorder says:

The stuff with Shawn Michaels has got me hooked. For the first time in a while, I honestly have no idea of how they plan to wrap up this angle, which is rare in wrestling. I assume that pulling an “Edge” and taking out one of the Elimination Chamber participants is possible, but then why telegraph that last night with his conversation with Teddy Long? I’m really hoping that he completely snaps and just does something so vicious and heinous to the Undertaker that he has no choice but to give Shawn a match at Wrestlemania. Whatever the payoff is, as long as it gets Shawn out of that stupid ass DX gear, I’m all for it. It’s time for Shawn to go back to dressing like a grown man.

    • LannyPoffo says:

I know it wouldn’t make any sense for Shawn to go for the Raw title, but I’d love to see him take Kofi out and steal his spot. It’s already well established that to get into the Chamber match, all you have to do is either:

      A) Win a qualifying match
      or
      B) Attack Kofi Kingston from behind and then lock yourself in his Chamber pod

  8. thebeast says:

First Raw I’ve watched where it took me 2 hours to get through the whole thing. I barely fast-forwarded anything. Bret/Vince/Cena segment was very good, the Shawn storyline is phenomenal and I’m also enjoying what’s happening with Legacy. Miz is of course a weekly highlight and I hope he shows up on Smackdown from now. Could have done without the Dibiase beating and Christian losing to Sheamus but they’re small complaints (especially if we see Christian on a more regular basis).

For those who wonder why some of us still watch WWE, last night’s episode is a great example. You’ve got 4-5 intriguing storylines going on at the same time, all are very nicely paced and delivering on a weekly basis.

  9. bones1387 says:

Is it just me or does this Shawn storyline seem to be drawing some parallels with Bret Hart’s story from early 1997, though it’s bad luck with Shawn rather than getting screwed, but really the end story is we could get the most interesting character in a hell of a long time if they play it right.

  10. Jstolz182 says:

surprised no one has even mentioned this, but how bout a “new ECW” invasion angle? They band together & randomly attack Raw & Smackdown stars & say screw being free agents, they worked their asses off & got ignored then cancelled! They claim they have contracts so they’re safe but they’re gonna wreck havoc for being shunned aside. Hey they’re all scrubs (save Christian, Regal, & Shelton) but hell it’d be more interesting than just squeezing them into the 2 shows & it can have legit heat as far as the ECW guys go (show cancelled, treated like 3rd rate stars for years), hell i’d mark out for it. Regal the mouthpiece leading Christian & the other guys (bout 6 or so). Opinions??
