Canadian of the Week #8

Thanks again for your help with this, here's the latest.  He's more up your alley.  http://bit.ly/dyS4Xq
Best,

Definitely more in line with my tastes, although I’d consider Thrillseekers v. Heavenly Bodies from SMW as his best match ever.  Really though, that was mostly Jericho’s broken arm and blood, so I can see the Summerslam match getting consideration.  Which begs the question:  Did Lance Storm really have a definitive greatest match?

Great question Scott. For being a pretty darn good worker, it’s hard to point to a match that went above 4* involving Lance. It’s a shame he never got put into a upper mid card feud in WWE. I hated the “he’s boring” angle with a passion. If you tell the fans he’s boring, what do you think they’ll perceive of him? They’re certainly not going to start chanting “he’s not boring!”

I reviewed Summerslam 2001 as part of my look back at the Invasion and really liked his match with Edge. I actually dedicated a good piece of that recap (of the match) to Storm and how people perceived him. He was awesome and carried that match. I gave it ***1/2.

Storm had an excellent match with Booker T on either Nitro or Thunder (not the one that was recently released on the WCW DVD), but I’ve always been partial to Impact Players vs. RVD and Lynn from heatwave 99 as my favorite Lance match.

Are you talking about Storm’s heavyweight title on Nitro right after he won the US, cruiserweight, and hardcore titles? If you are, I’m right there with you; I’ve always loved that match. Watching it live, there was a point in the match where I absolutely believed (despite being almost positive that it wouldn’t happen) that Booker was going to tap out.

The more I think about, Lance Storm reminds me of Arn Anderson, except if Arn had never met Ric Flair.

If we’re counting indies, his ROH tag match with Steen last year was about ****.

I’m a huge mark for his heel work in 2000 WCW, but I love 2000 WCW in general, so my opinion may not be the mainstream.

You’re a brave soul for admitting you like 2000 WCW around these parts. God bless ya…

Anyway, another standout match he had in ROH was against Danielson on one of their 2006 Wrestlemania weekend shows. I’d put that somewhere around ****. He seemed like he was having fun in front of a smark crowd that appreciated his workrate, something he may not have been doing during most of his WWE run.

I thought Lance Storm vs. Jerry Lynn from ECW Anarchy Rulz 1999 was fantastic.

It’s a little short, but the match with Sting on Nitro that ended with Sting doing the British Fall for maybe the only time in his career was a hell of a lot of fun.
