Comics You Should Own: JLI

This is an awesome overview of the “Bwahahaha” years of the Justice League, which is one of my favorite runs of any comic ever.  Really makes me wish for a Showcase Presents version of the series, or at least decently priced paperbacks.

DC’s recently put out four hardcovers, and is slowly putting out softcovers as well.

You can usually find used copies of the hardcovers for around ten bucks each, which is worth it. I think that JLI looks great in color and I don’t know how well it would translate to black and white in the showcase format.

The next HC, in theory, should collect the first 7-8 issues of JLE and 2-3 issues of JLA, since Volume 4 ended right before the first of many X-Overs between the two books. Also, the as of yet collected “JLI Annual #2″, which features a JLI/Joker fight that also has yet to be collected.

JLI isn’t in showcase yet – and given how colourful it is, I’m not sure if it would be as fun in the format – but, astoundingly, Dan Jurgens’ Booster Gold series IS.

It’s a totally different take on the character since he’s more serious than he’d later be in JLI, but it’s still pretty great.

I wish there was some rhyme or reason to the Showcase reprints. I want some late-70s / early 80s JLA, NTT, LSH, etc. to go with my Claremont / Byrne Essentials.

JLI WILL make it to the Showcase, but only when DC finishes up the OG 261 issue JLA run (which, Showcasewise, is currently around issue #60).

And that’s not fucking taking into account DC’s reluctance to reprint ANYTHING from 1976-1996 unless it’s to promote a new project, a favor to a creator in favor at DC, or if the people involved are dead or willing to take a royalty paycut due to the screwy royalty rate rules DC had back during that period of time.

Said royalty rate problems have basically halted several Showcase Present serieses (and why some like Green Lantern will probably get one more volume before it’s shut down), why DC is stopping the release of New Teen Titans in HC after four volumes, and it’s the chief reason Suicide Squad, arguably THE MOST ANTICIPATED Showcase Present book to be announced, will never see the light of day due to DC pulling it’s release at the last minute due to the royalty rate being so high that DC believes it won’t make them enough money to justify it’s release.

I feel as though you can pick up the originals for fairly cheap.

Giffen’s JL wasn’t that great in my opinion. Justice League is the BIG GUNS.

While I can appreciate Booster/Beetle and the other B-teamers, What do you when an A level threat comes? They wouldn’t win IMO.

My first exposure to the JLI was in the Death of Superman, and I immediately loved the characters of Guy, Booster and Beetle.

Having read parts of JLI, it’s quite entertaining.

However, there’s nothing more tired or annoying than JLI fanboys bitching about Identity and Infinite Crisis or Blackest Night, which are (so far, in Blackest Night’s case) better stories than anything written about the JLI gang.
