2009 DVDs

Hi there, hope you are well. Here is one for the blog.

As a wrestling DVD afficianado, would you say 2009 has been the best year for the classic retrospectives? Think of these WWE releases:

Best of SNME

Best of the 90s

Randy Savage Collection

Allied Powers: Tag Team Collection (people had expectations which could not be met, but there is some good stuff on there)

Rise and Fall of WCW (see above)

Summerslam and Survivor Series anthologies

World Title set (not out for a couple more weeks, but looks like it has some good stuff)

I have been collecting them for a number of years, and I can not think of a year which had more great sets released. Is this the last year of the large number of great releases? Or do we have more awesomeness to come? If not this year, which would you say was the best?

It’s been a good year for them, certainly.  I can’t say as I generally can remember what year stuff was released in, but I recall that there was also a good run of stuff one year with the Mick Foley set, the Bret Hart collection and the original Flair collection all released fairly close together.  But yeah, for history sets, this has been a pretty boffo year, and I’m all over the World title set when it comes out.

Watch the quality take a nose dive in 2010. First up are the Best of Raw 2009 (which for all I know could be an empty DVD case) and The Best of John Morrison, a guy who hasn’t done anything of significance yet.

    • MarSolo says:

The Morrison could be a complete collection of his career thus far, from Tough Enough till now (yeah, there’s something they never mention).

And the Best of Raw 2009? Guarantee it will feature nothing but all the featured celebrities that have guest hosted this year, and the “epic” storyline of John Cena and Randy Orton.

Is the John Morrison one going to be just JM? Or are we getting MNM, and his run as Johnny Nitro?

This year, has been the best. It seemed like every week something was coming out that I had to have. 2008 was awesome as well, it was the year of the three-disc superstar series. Not to mention almost every PPV was worth buying on DVD.

But, yeah, this world heavyweight championship DVD will be the best of this year, no doubt.

While the titles themselves seem great, I was less than impressed with some releases. I think the reasons why Rise and Fall of WCW were disappointing have been hammered into the ground, it’s still true that it wasn’t what it could have been, and not just because of pro-Vince bias.

Likewise, the World Title DVD. I’ve looked at the match listing and am deeply confused. I gather some of the matches were left off because they are already on other DVD sets, but some listed on that set are baffling, to say the least.

Likewise, much like certain “Autobiographies” there always has to be kissing-of-Vince’s-ass, and burial or complete ignoring of people who Vince has a grudge against.

John Morrison is getting a DVD set? Is that confirmed yet? And who did Chris Jericho piss off for him not to have a set yet?

BTW, the first Flair set was released in ‘03, Foley’s in ‘04, and Hart’s in ‘05.

So far I’ve only seen the first two five year periods for survivor series. Are they releasing, or have they released, an entire boxed set with all the shows yet? And if so, is Benoit in them. I’m not purchasing the set if it’s incomplete and censored.

    • guy incognito says:

so far only the first volumes have been released.

regarding Benoit: he was included in the SummerSlam Anthologies, so the chances are his in the Survivor Series dvds as well.

      • Comdukakis says:

True, and you would think i would have figured that out since I own the Summerslam boxed set. I’m just hoping they will release a whole set of Survivor Series rather than the individual sets. For Summer Slam, Royal Rumble, and WM, I just purchased the whole shebang at once.

Anyways, I think my thought process was that since they only released the first two so far instead of releasing the big 20 disc set at once, that maybe they were reluctant to release Benolit. They are going more and more PG since the SummerSlam set. They better not censor any blood either.

I think next year (2010) they can release 3 and 4, which would go from 1997-2006.

The year after that, they could release Volume 5, which would cover 2007-2011, once that Survivor Series took place.

I was pretty disappointed myself that they stopped at 96. I mean, one more and 1997 and all of that stuff is RIGHT THERE on a disc.

I like the individual “Best of’s” and all, and very much the release of the Summerslam and Survivor Series, but I am still irked that they are bleeding out the release of the PPV sets. At this rate we won’t get to full “Halloween Havoc” sets for like 20 years. How about 52 Episdoes of Superstars from 1990? Something like that? My point is I want everything. NOW. 24/7 is good, but not great. I hate the way they break up the continuity of the TV stuff. Worth the money, but flawed. So, yeah, everything on DVD right away, please.
