Well, at least my top two seeds (Midnight Express and Edge & Christian) got to the quarterfinals before facing each other.
Going with the Bulldogs, Hart Foundation, Midnight Express, and Steiners. If these pull through, we’ll have a classic WWF-NWA finale (Steiners were in the WWF, but their best years were in the NWA)
Man, the Guerrero’s really seem out of place at this point. Again I must reemphasize, FUCKING CHAVO GUERRERO. I loved Eddie as much as the next guy, but even he couldn’t carry Chavo this far.
I hear ya. With Arn/Tully, Demolition, and the Dudleys out before them it shows how brackets can affect who gets to the final. They have been lucky to have an easy draw.
Totally agree…. you look at the names on the list and then see a mid card for life guy like Chavo- he just stick out like a sore thumb.
Eddie needed a better partner, but the guy he is most associated with as a tag is Art Barr and obviously this is a US promotion tourney.
When we watch the NCAA basketball tourney, we always look for the dark horses and upsets to make it exciting.
Chavo is making it exciting for me. Although I have pretty much voted against him EVERY SINGLE ROUND, he keeps on getting the nod.
Its funny.
It reminds me of the tag match in the 88 Survivor Series with the Conquistadores. They kept getting out of being eliminated throughout the whole match….
Los Guerreros were the last great tag team Vince ever pushed. Who cares how shitty Chavo is as a singles wrestler? Somebody show me a 5-star Neidhart, Lane, or Animal match… well, maybe Lane, but he was never out of the midcard that I saw. Rick Steiner’s no genius in singles, either. It’s irrelevant.
Yeah, I’ve been thinking that their run has mirrored a real tourney. There would be that one team fluking its way through, the fans would be braying for their blood and they would just keep winning. Can’t see them getting past the Bulldogs, though.
Midnights-E&C was the hardest one of the tournament so far for me – went with the Midnights mainly because I couldn’t remember a good E&C match that didn’t involve tables and ladders. The promos for that match would have been tremendous, though.
3/4 of this round are ****+ easily (And Steiners/Roadies would probably hit *** – ***1/2).
I second the above posters by pledging an entire paycheck to see this tournament. Book it over a two weekend period (Fri-Sun) and you have the formula for HUGE buyrates.
Of course, this is all fantasy, and we are all just nerds…
No, I did, too. Although the picks get harder and harder. I’m expecting this to end with either the Steiners or the Harts standing with their hands raised.
I’m just really glad that this tourney isn’t ending up Demolition vs the Road Warriors in the finals like most of them do. I was sad to see Arn and Tully beat, but at least it was the Bulldogs that took them out. Shocked to see Eddie and Chavo still around, it’s Chavo people, not Art Barr, not even Tajiri…Its Chavo…Bulldogs put Chavo out of his lucky streak, Dynamite and Eddie on the floor slugging it out, Davey destroys Chavo with a running powerslam. Harts over the Blondes, Pillman accidently slugs Austin, Austin slaps Pillman off the ring apron, turns around into the grip of Anvil, heart attack clothesline and thats all she wrote…Edge and Christian over Midnights, Big Bubba Rogers comes out and acts like he is going to kill Christian with the tennis racket, but then Bossman slams Sweet Stan, and picks up the racket and takes Jimmy Cornette over his shoulder and leaves ringside and Cornette can only look on in horror as the referee is distracted by the Bossmans actions and Edge and Christian hit the con-chair-to on Lane and its all over. Bossman explains that his paychecks have bounced and he was taking Jimmy home to mama to get an explanation. Then the Steiners vs The Road Warriors. Back and forth match, lots of power moves by the Roadies and lots of suplexes by the Steiners. Animal backflips Rick out of the ring and is dejected thinking he is disqualified, as that is the finish that always used to happen to the Road Warriors. Stunned that there was no bell, he is met by Scott Steiner who lifts him up for the Suplex Piledriver for the win. Controversy though, turns out that the Suplex Piledriver is actually banned in 5 states, and this happens to be one of them. Steiners are disqualified and the Road Warriors move on. Hey whaddya know, the Roadies actually BENEFIT from the Dusty finish instead of getting screwed. Miracles do happen.
I might be the only one to say this, but the Guerreros wouldnt get this far had Eddie never died. I think some people are voting just for the love of the late great star and not factoring in Chavo as the weak link.
Personally? I was highly entertained by Los Guerreros during their time. The matches were hilarious with Eddie-isms and the vignettes were hilarious.
Of course, I fully admit that Eddie carried the team entirely, both wrestling and entertainment-wise, but I still would have voted them against many of the teams they’ve been put again.
Hmmm… The Bulldogs wrestled the Hart Foundation many times, and the Hart Foundation wrestled The Road Warriors at least once. The Road Warriors wrestled The Steiners and the Midnight Express.
Any other matches that actually happened here? Did Eddie and Chavo ever team while Edge and Christian were still around?
Did the Steiners ever wrestle the MX or the Hart Foundation, or did they show up too late in the NWA and WWF, respectively? I know I’ve seen the Steiners wrestle Bret and OWEN.
I’m positive the Steiners and the Midnight Express wrestled each other on TV, though I don’t have any memory of a particular match. The Steiners did beat the express for the US tag team titles at a house show, too.
I think (don’t quote me) that E&C did wrestle Eddie/Chavo at least once. Would it have been around the same time as the highest point of Smackdown, with the use of the “Smackdown Six”?
No, wait. I think Edge was teaming with Rey at that time, so no, maybe those two teams never met.
-I’ve voted Los Guerreros through most of this, but I’ve gotta go with the Bulldogs. But it’d be one HELL of a match.
-Haven’t honestly voted favourably with the Blondes and I’ll continue that here. Harts would take them and again, it’d be a hell of a match.
-Sadly, I’ve never seen the Express in action, didn’t grow up on them (pretty much been a WWF/E fan) and all of their significance in the business is lost to me. So, E&C.
-Gonna have to go Road Warriors, here. They always entertained me much more than the Steiners did.

I would pay big $$$ to see this card.

and then Mr. Fuji happened.

I took the Bulldogs, Harts, Midnights & Road Warriors. Goddamn this would make a great show.
Midnights-E&C was the hardest one of the tournament so far for me – went with the Midnights mainly because I couldn’t remember a good E&C match that didn’t involve tables and ladders. The promos for that match would have been tremendous, though.
Also, Blondes-Harts would have been off the charts. ****+ in their sleep.
Bulldogs, Hart Foundation, Mid Express and Steiners.
Time for the Guerreros, Austin and Pillman, and overrated Edge and Christan to go home.
Tough pick between Road Warriors and Steiners, but I think Steiners pull it off.
Too bad we didn’t get Taker/Kane vs. Road Warriors. The no-selling would’ve been legendary.
To quote Scott from an old review (can’t remember what it was):
The first one to sell a move wins!

Damnit I wanted The Steiners vs The Megapowers.
BullDogs
Blondes- NWA Bias.
MX
Warriors
Am I the only one picked E&C over the Midnights?
No, I did, too. Although the picks get harder and harder. I’m expecting this to end with either the Steiners or the Harts standing with their hands raised.
So did I… the match would have been great, but even better would be the prematch promos between Cornette and E/C.
Bulldogs, Blonds (sorry, the Harts are getting really overrated here), E/C and the Steiners
I took E&C too. Just liked them better.
Guerreros (while Bulldogs drew more money, I preferred the Guerreros because they had better matches on a consistent basis)
Blondes (they were both pretty equal, but Blondes had some MOTY type matches whereas HF couldn’t really get past the ***1/2 mark).
The Midnight Express (love them both, but MNX were the more consistent team)
Steiner Brothers (to finally get rid of the Warriors once and for all)
Since the Bulldogs somehow beat Arn & Tully, I had to take them over Los Guerreros.
Hart Foundation over Blondes – personal preference.
E&C over MNX – personal preference again.
Steiners over Road Warriors – If the Road Warriors win this fucking thing, I’m gonna be pissed. Lousy, no-selling, clumsy-ass thugs.
But, to reiterate the words of Ace Bradley, “Of course, this is all just fantasy, and we are all just nerds.” I imagine I’ll get over it.

No they were i good team IMO.
Just not sweet 16 worthy. But I attribute that to the luck of the draw.
Everybody loves a dark horse. They wont make it any farther.

Argh. And the choices, they get tougher:
