Steiners, Road Warriors, Edge & Christian, Megapowers, Kane and Undertaker, Hart Foundation, Los Guerreros and… oh, wow, that top one is hard for me, but I decided to go with the Bulldogs because that seemed to open up more future booking possibilities.
Edge and Christian would be the perfect team to benefit from the Megapowers finally EXPLODING in the next round!
Savage walks off while E&C taunt and assault poor old Hulk.
I’m going to WrestleMania!!! (Sorry, just had to let that out.)
RVD and Sabu beat Los Guerreros. Chavo is the weak link of that team.
Owen and Bulldog UPSET the Hart Foundation. Bulldog has more power than Anvil and Owen gets the better of his brother Bret.
Hollywood Blondes beat Undertaker and Kane after Kane and Undertaker turn on eachother for the Blondes to get the win. I must remind myself that this Austin is NOT Stone Cold Steve Austin and still Stunning Steve.
MegaPowers over the Midnight Express. But after the win, Hogan and Savage get into a little argument about who gets the pin only for Miss Elizabeth to stop the fight and they shake hands.
Outsiders take care of E&C after Syxx hits Edge with a chair when the ref wasnt looking.
Road Warriors beat the Rockers when Shawn Michaels walks out of the match to into the crowd to talk to a girl.
If we are taking all these teams at the top of their game, then The Megapowers win. This is wrestling though, so I’m gonna go w/an explosion if they ever cross paths with The Outsiders. The 98 Nitro on 24/7 now is the perfect example of why they were one of the few actually cool acts in wrestling. The crowd loves them so they go through ALL their catch phrases, then because their still getting cheers they just pass the mic back and forth until they have nothing left to say! The crowd is way into them the whole match and when they lose the tag titles the crowd goes nuts for the Steiners. Perfect. Who cares about workrate, when it’s entertaining tv.(not sports-entertainment, just entertainment)
Anyone else having trouble with the voting button? It just starts spinning and then never stops on mine. I tried a few times and think it worked the last one.
I went Tully/Arn, Eddie/Chavo (although I would’ve gone with the Strike Force had I been around…no idea why, but they were my favorite team and Tito was my first favorite wrestler when I started watching wrestling), Hart Foundation, Blondes, Midnight Express, Edge/Christian, Road Warriors and the Steiners.
Ha! Tito was my first favorite too! Tito, and then Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. Of course, Hogan was what drew me in to begin with, so I have to mention him, too.
For me, it was Tito and then Savage. I started watching between WM3 and WM4 and remember being very frustrated that 1) Savage couldn’t win the IC title from HTM and 2) I couldn’t stay awake through all of SNME.
With all due respect to The British Bulldogs, they always seemed like a rather dumb team to me and I think Arn/Tully could sucker the Bulldogs into a loss. Or Arn/Tully would be booked to win by a reverse decision like Starrcade ‘87 against a stronger (build wise) Road Warriors.
Bulldogs – Can’t explain. Just like ‘em more.
Eddie & Chavo – If this happened circa ‘96 when all were at their peaks, holy crap. That would’ve been amazing.
Hart Foundation – Surprised the ‘E never tried to run with this one because they could’ve in ‘95/’96.
Hollywood Blondes – Taker & Kane aren’t a tag team. They were two singles wrestlers. Never liked them working together.
MXE – Cornette would’ve cheated his ass off to help his guys. They probably would’ve done something to Elizabeth to draw Savage away, worn Hogan down, and then Savage would eat the pin because we know Hogan wouldn’t lay down for nobody in the era these two were big.
E&C – Again, the Outsiders were two singles guys shoehorned into teaming because they didn’t have anything better for them to do. Never had any good matches as a team, never truly worked well as heels because the fans loved their shtick too much (except against the Steiners), and there was too much chicanery involved in their losses so they never ended up losing clean.
Road Warriors – Warriors stomp pretty boys dead.
Steiners – Kind of like their original feud.
-Tully & Arn (both are about equal but Brainbusters had good matches on more of a consistent basis)
-Eddie & Chavo Guerrero (RVD & Sabu finally get to go home)
-The Hart Foundation (extremely tough one, but went with HF because they drew money and I think Owen/Bulldog never had a great match outside Furnas/LaPhon and that one Austin/HBK match)
-The Hollywood Blondes (BOD finally get to go home)
-MNX (Hogan & Savage finally get to go home)
-Edge & Christian (another easy one)
-The Rockers (easy pick for me, but I’m thinking RW might win this one)
Weren’t the Harts/Bulldogs matches between 4 related people? Davey Boy and The Anvil were Bret’s brother-in-laws on his family’s side and I thought Dynamite had married Bret’s wife Julie’s sister which would make him a brother-in-law on his wife’s side. Maybe I’m wrong, though?
You’re not wrong (and the web gets even more confusing when you throw in DBS and Dynamite being cousins). Plus I’m pretty sure I saw a Bret/DBS vs. Owen/Anvil circa late ‘94 match. And just given the sheer numbers, there HAS to have been a tag match with four Samoans, right?
Maybe I just have the dumb today, but I can’t remember a lot of major feuds between brothers pre-Harts. Storylines about how “the family is being torn apart” seem so obvious and cliched now, but I don’t remember the Von Erich, Funk, or Guerrero brothers doing it.
I never caught WCCW, but watching the documentaries, if Fritz was smart he should of made one of the Von Erichs a black sheep and joined them up with the Freebirds for a short time.
Then they could of ran a “road to redemption” storyline to bigger business, rather than keeping them all wholesome good christian boys.
I would of went with Kerry or “Lance”
“Lance” being the case after he was outed as not being a Von Erich. Instead of Fritz just rubbing him out of existance, turn him heel and say he lied for the notoriety. The heat was there, should of capatilized on it.
My picks:
Brainbusters (toughtest one to date)
Guerreros
Hart Foundation
Blondes
MX (total bias here)
E+C
Warriors
Steainers (Tough one)
“Lance” was outed as a fake Von Erich because he’d walked out of World Class and joined the short-lived Wild West Wrestling, an “outlaw” promotion in Fort Worth that was around long enough to get a regional TV deal and promote a tag title that wound up being defended more in World Class than it was in its own promotion.
When Ken Mantell (who had booked World Class’ most successful period before going to Mid-South/UWF, and staying there until the Crockett buyout) started Wild West Wrestling, he took a number of World Class talents, including Lance Von Erich (who had to be renamed “Fabulous Lance”, since the Von Erich name was a registered trademark).
When Mantell wound up purchasing a sizeable portion of World Class (after Fritz decided to pull out) and merging Wild West’s roster and television contract with what was left of World Class, all of the notable defectors came back – with the exception of Lance. At least one ex-WCCWer from that era (who shall remain nameless) claims that there was a lot more to Lance leaving than his defection to Wild West – something pretty much on par with what many of the guys believe led to the death of Gino Hernandez.

Rock on!!!! Have a blast a Mania!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Outback!!! I definitely plan to!!
The only match-up that gave me fits was ‘Busters/Bulldogs. I ended up taking the Bulldogs after much thought.

Steiners beat Doom.

Yeah, maybe that’s an idea for future tourneys…vote as if Dusty was booking or Russo, or Heyman, etc, etc…
Went with:
-The British Bulldogs
-Eddie & Chavo Guerrero
-Owen Hart & The British Bulldog
-The Hollywood Blondes
-The Megapowers
-The Outsiders
-The Rockers
-The Steiner Brothers
Bulldogs – Can’t explain. Just like ‘em more.
Eddie & Chavo – If this happened circa ‘96 when all were at their peaks, holy crap. That would’ve been amazing.
Hart Foundation – Surprised the ‘E never tried to run with this one because they could’ve in ‘95/’96.

“Warriors stomp pretty boys dead.” lol That was exactly why I didn’t like the Rockers as a kid.

-The Rockers (easy pick for me, but I’m thinking RW might win this one)
-Steiner Brothers (easy pick)
Tully & Arn win by targeting Dynamite’s back.
Eddie & Chavo win on active brain cell count alone.
Owen and Bulldog–tough one, so I gave it to the dead guys. (Has there ever been a tag match between two established teams of four related people?)
Hollywood Blondes because they were just awesome.
Midnights over Hogan/Savage when Stan Lane distracts Randy by seducing Elizabeth, so Cornette can waffle Hogan with the racket for the Eaton pin.
Edge & Christian just because.
Uber-heel Road Warriors beat the Rockers in an old-school bloodbath, with the help of Paul Ellering and their shoulder pad spikes.
Steiners beat Doom because they usually (always?) did.

Damn. Thanks for that. That was never said in either documentary.
for obvious reasons.

The Bulldogs would never be outsmarted with Capt. Lou in their corner. I would love to see the Blondes take the whole thing.
This whole tournament is a sham without Lenny and Lodi.
