The result you’re all waiting for is after the break, and you’re not gonna believe how close it was!
- The Steiner Brothers (93%) squash the US Express (7%), as Rotundo attempts an airplane spin on Scott, but is left dizzy and gets flattened and pinned after a Steinerline by Rick. I think that’s about the best Windham & Rotundo could have expected in this thing.
- Doom (79%) knocks off the Smoking Gunns (21%), proving themselves to have more legs than I expected.
- The Rockers (66%) stun the Rock N Sock Connection (34%) when Mankind takes too long going for Mr. Socko and a frustrated Rock lays him out and leaves him for dead.
And finally…
- The Road Warriors (50%) beat Demolition (50%) by FOUR VOTES, 888-884. Wow. Voting was incredibly close from the moment polls opened, but Demolition never led at any point, so I finally closed it and declared the Warriors the winners.
So our semi-finals look like this:
- The Steiner Brothers v. Doom in a match that actually did happen several times in 1989-90 and was pretty good each time. The series was pretty even as well.
- The Road Warriors v. The Rockers in the classic power v. speed matchup.
Good thing I voted 4 times for Demolition. Kept them close.
Not sure if the extra votes count, but can eveybody seemingly vote over and over if they want to?
Yes, but I was hoping everyone used the honor system and voted only once…guess not.
Either way, I voted for LOD; but would’ve been ok if the Demo’s took it.
Honor? This is wrestling we’re talking about
I saw the polls open everytime I came around, but I hope not. That would truly suck.
Yeah, I don’t like the multiple voting system either.
I’ve also used the honor system when it came to voting.
Yeah I think we should just have an unofficial rule to only vote one time. Not that big of a deal but if someone voted like 20 or 30 times it could swing the results. Either way Scott this tournament is fucking awesome dude, and the voting and getting the results and reading the comments is hands down the highlight of my web surfing day over the last week!
In fact someone was power-voting one of the matchups tonight so I turned vote-blocking on. Let’s not ruin the fun by being jackasses, people.
YES!!!
LOD for life!!!
75% chance of the NWA walking out this bracket a winner. Go LOD!!
I demand a recount! Can we have a Dusty finish in this tourny? Or can Russo crash book Demolition back into it somehow?
I just laughed so loud at that that someone on the phone had to walk away so they could hear the person on the other line. Call Russo! He’ll solve this!
I too voted on the honor system. I’m a sucker.
Oh, and as for Doom… I think you can chalk up their going deep in this tourney to the luck of the draw. I mean, who would you rather vote for? Badass Ron Simmons or Billy and Bart fucking Gunn? I can still see clear as day Bart Gunn’s head wobbling like it’s on a spring after getting coldcocked by Butterbean at WMXV. I’m not voting for that over two awesome looking black dudes.
In its first incarnation (with the masks) Doom sucked. Its only when Teddy Long managed them and they unmasked (along with working with the Steiners and the Horsemen) did they become awesome.
Doom was good for the hot cup of coffee they had.
Yeah Doom was a good team. Probably the last great new-tag team name for awhile. “Miracle Violence Connection” was pretty awesome… but The Quebecers? Men on A Mission? Blech.
LOD skirting by…just like during their careers…while the Demos go gracefully.
They’d have won the whole thing anyway.
I think LOD winning by 4 votes shows how much the posters here loved them.
I must admit that I thought it would of been a massacre.
I grew up a WWF fan, and was totally enamored with Demolition, until I saw an old tape of the Road Warriors. I was just blown away and then i found out from an older friend that Demos were just a ripoff, it was over.
But still, much respect to the people who voted for Demolition, I see they have thier fans.
“them” being Demolition.
Wow Demolition loses by only a couple of votes… surprising.
I prefer the Dems myself, but LOD were probably overall better workers in the power style then Demolition. LOD’s double-teaming moves were always pretty hard hitting, where you were never sure what you were gonna get from Demolition — sometimes they’d make that double ax-handle spot look good and other times it would look SO weak.
I voted for Demolition myself and while I can believe LOD won, I’m certainly disappointed.
Did I just miss it, but where are the Hollywood Blondes?
They’re in the Thesz division. Beat the Freebirds in Round 1. Rd. 2 hasn’t happened yet.
Since we’re talking about The LODd and Demolition…
—-For what it’s worth, names that have been discussed the most lately for the 2010 WWE Hall of Fame are Ted DiBiase, the Road Warriors, Demolition and Slick.
There are a lot of rumors about Ultimate Warrior, Lex Luger and The Honky Tonk Man being inducted also. Ron Simmons is also said to be a possibility.
Out of all these names, Ted DiBiase is considered the strongest possibility.
I’d like to see Ravishing Rick Rude get the nod but I suppose they don’t want too many dead people (Road Warrior Hawk) per year.
Here’s an interesting thought: If Demolition is inducted, do Brian Adams and Randy Colley (the original Smash) go in, too?
That IS a good question! My guess would be no but I could be wrong about that.
Ooh, those are some good matchups. I’m pretty sure that the Road Warriors had left for Atlanta by the time the Midnight Rockers debuted in the AWA. That could have been a great match.
I’m watching AWA on ESPN Classic right now and Ricky Morton just had a match. I don’t remember the RnRs having an AWA run. The Rockers are still there, in fact defending against Badd Company later.
The Rockers did face LOD in the WWF in early 1992. For the titles. LOD won, as some Rocker miscommunication got in the way. It was during the Rocker break-up angle. It was a Superstars match.
One of the oddest things about becoming an IWC member (if you will) was learning that people considered the Rockers one of the great teams of that era. Now, I was a Rocker mark at age 7, but looking back, they were jobbers. I mean, they were right down there with the Bushwhackers as far as being the JTTS for other tag teams. Wrestlemania VII was their first PPV win. I guess I assumed though it was because they were good workers. And love for Michaels.
That’s interesting and pretty much true. I remember watching one of the old WWF Supertape VHS tapes and seeing a “profile” on The Rockers that had them losing 2/3 matches they were featured in. But yeah — they were one of my favorite teams too, just a notch below the Harts.
Right. But Shawn was still on a lot of the old Coliseum tapes. I guess they knew talent when they saw it. Even regarding the Shawn/jobber thing, I think if one looked back you would see that Marty seemed to take the pin more than Shawn.
The Demos winning would have made things more interesting. Someone was right earlier when they said that Doom advanced because of their (its?) draw. Give the Demos that draw, they advance to the sweet sixteen.
My first paragraph gives me an interesting thought. Help please, if you can. Has anyone else ever noticed in classic tag teams if one partner took a disproportionate number of pins compared to another, such as Marty to Shawn. Did Smash take more pins than Ax? Hawk than Animal? Rick than Scott? These are just some ideas.
Not sure why Vince made them pseudo jobbers for so long, but who can figure Vince out sometimes. I mean, he turned a bad ass hardcore team like the Sheepherders into a comedy team.
The Rockers in the AWA had some pretty phenomenal matches and held the belts for a while.
