Jim Crockett Division: Quarterfinals!

Not sure why the blog’s being all weird this week, but the tournament must go on!

For the second round, I’ve eliminated the “Draw” option, so now you must pick a winner.

Good luck to all the teams!

The Steiners take out the US Express after a Frankensteiner to Rotundo.

Doom takes out the Gunns due to Billy Gunn being Billy Gunn.

The Rockers hit Foley with the double fist drop.

The Demos move on after a Demolition Decapitation to Hawk.

Though in all honesty, I loved both LOD & the Demos. I really only chose Demolition because of their BADASS entrance music. Yes, that’s what it came down to for me.

No way in hell Road Warriors lose to the knock offs.

      Steiners destroy US Express
      Doom squashes NAO
Rock N Sock squeak by Rockers (only cuz I want HBK out of this tourney completely.)
      Warriors beat the imposters.

    • Ace Bradley says:

While Demolition’s music was badass, the Road Warriors used to come down to “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath.

You would hear the thump of the drums, then, as the guitars hit that satanic chord, the Warriors would slide into the ring, kill the jobbers dead, and get set to cut a promo before Ozzy even begins singing.

      Now THAT was BadAss!

      • Brod208 says:

Fair point… my counterpoint would be that ‘Demolition’ was written for Demolition… Iron Man is hardly associated with the Warriors these days except in dream tag team tournaments.

I refuse to call Demolition impostors though. They created their own legacy to the point where it still holds up well today and to new fans to the game in the late 80’s like myself who had only read and heard about the Road Warriors I had no idea that people saw Demolition as rip-offs and to me they were two entirely separate entities.

Ax and Smash circa WM5 wouldn’t lose to Hawk and Animal of any era. There wouldn’t be any doomsday devices or demolition decapitations but you can be damn sure there wouldn’t be any 30 second squashes either. When you think about who Demo’s lost their titles to it sort of reads a lot better than to whom the LOD lost theirs to if you’re willing to split hairs.

So for me the Demo’s take it.

No argument here. I would have called it a Draw, but since Scott eliminated that option, I literally flipped a coin to decide.

          The Roadies win with heads.

Again, I agree that Demolition walked in NOBODY’S shadow. Whatever perception they had in the beginning quickly went away. They got over, and created their own legacy that we still enjoy today.

As for the music, Rick Derringer’s “Demolition” is one of (if not) the greatest entrance themes EVER. As much as I love “Iron Man” (my favorite Sabbath song), the intensity and aura of the Warriors entrance made that experience much more awesome.

For all the hype the Steiners get, they never struck me as “that” good.

Rock n Sock v. The Rockers would be a HELL of a match.

Micheals v. Rock is probably my ultimate dream match-up.

  4. Barbarash says:

Geez I contemplated Rockers vs Rock N Sock for at least a minute it was that difficult! I ended up with the Rockers because they were so damn exciting in the late 80’s early 90’s and innovative (much better than the Rock n Roll Express IMHO)… Rock n Sock were great on the promo side but not together long enough to compare.

Still damn did it make me think about an in their prime Rock vs HBK match.. that could have been the greatest rivalry ever if it had happened.

The Demos were winners on the grandest stage and always won the big one.. They were the #1 tag team in the world during the period of time in which Tag Team wrestling was at it’s overall best.. The journeyman-like Road Warriors not so much, so I gotta go with Repo Krushchev & Axis the Demolishing Super Masked Superstar Machine Guy.. I mean really, Ax & Smash’s career winning percentage together is probably insane…

    • The Fuj says:

And the Warriors didn’t win… ALL THE TIME?!

They not only help change the look of wrestlers, but wrestling. The only reason they never amounted to anything in the WWF, is because Vince didnt create them.

They were never gonna get a real run on top.

But to say that the LOD were merely journeymen (while true) is just hate. They dominated everywere they went. By the time they got up north they were on a decline.

They main-evented shows with the Horsemen. Hawk main evented a PPV, and it drew something.

Split Demolition up and they werent worth anything.

Now I like Demolition as much as the next man, and eventually they became a totally different team than LOD, but come on, they were knock offs.

      • Mad Dog Joe IS The Mask says:

It’s not hate.. This year for Halloween I was Hawk & my 9 year old son was Animal, complete with intricate spider on his forehead. I still have the stupid mohawk.. It’s the opposite of the Lil Wayne mohawk, so I’m kepping it for now.. And I never said they were “merely” journeymen, they were awesome. But the Demo’s were tag team wrestling’s version of Lesnar/Goldberg.. Complete dominance.. Just cuz LOD came first means nothing.. That’s like saying Jesse Ventura would beat Hogan cuz he had the look first.. But valid points, the LOD were a true DRAW, which should count for something.. But ANYONE would have drawn with Flair on top.. ROBERT GIBSON could draw as a solo act, if he was main eventing against Flair..

AND BY THE WAY.. Where are the Mulkeys in this tournament ???

        • The Fuj says:

Kudos for the Halloween visual kind sir…

And nothing about Hawk is stupid. Just so you know. You rock the two strip mohawk with pride!

The Mulkeys sadly are sitting next to Paul Roma and Jim Powers, Conquistador Uno and Dos, and Marcus Alexander Bagwell dying for a chance to get in.

But like Demonoid, its invite only.

  6. Since my question got wiped out, I’ll ask it again: Scott, why aren’t you voting in these? Why not take part in the fun with the rest of us? Surely, your one vote wouldn’t be enough to sway any of the battles, right?

    • Scott Keith says:

I’m voting, I’m just not sharing any opinions so as not to sway things.

Especially in a certain race that’s drawing by far the most votes, and is currently sitting in a dead heat at 50% each. This is gonna get ugly!

      • Drawing the most votes? Odd, I thought everyone would vote on every match equally. I guess it’s like our local civic election ballots where it says you can vote for up to 6 candidates. I always vote for 6 but I suppose there are people who vote for less.

  7. jvc113 says:

I want Demos v. Steiners in the finals of this bracket, damnit~!

    • OutbackJames says:

Lol. Just curious – if pressed, have you thought about who you’d give the nod to?

      • jvc113 says:

I think Steiners, but I’m not sure. I just think it would be an awesome match.

Maybe Demolition, though. They were really great.

I think The Steiners would just hit all these awesome moves and the Demolition would no-sell everything and somehow that would be magical.

We’ve seen Steiners/Roadies… it’s not good. And people here are right, Demolition was DOMINANT.

I think Road Warriors are going to win, but I think Demolition in the upset would be more fun. I wish they had a more definitive feud in the WWF. It’s a shame Ax got axed before that could happen.

  8. Haha555 says:

    I sense an Steiners/Road Warriors showdown soon………..

  9. TBT says:

Road Warriors were all show and no go. Champs in regional Georgia, champs in dying AWA, Six Man Champs with Booker Dusty, NWA Tag Champs until freakin’ Varsity Club beat them. When they went big time in the WWF, they barely overcame the Nasty Boys to win the belts and were outclassed by Money Inc. They again barely got by the Godwinns and were out-and-out embarassed by the New Age Outlaws.

Demolition beat Strike Force’s ass, the Powers of Pain’s ass, Tully & Arn’s ass, Andre and Haku’s ass and anyone who got in their way’s ass until a heart condition did them in.

Demolition ripped off the Road Warriors and them pissed all over them.

  10. thatnickguy says:

    My votes:

    1) Steiners, only because I’ve never watched any of US Express’ work.
    2) Doom, for two reasons: DAMN and fuck Billy Gunn.
    3) Rock N’Sock. Sorry Marty/Shawn, but my love for Rock/Foley trumps.
    4) Demolition. Aside from the Crush addition, they didn’t overstay their welcome by about 10 years.

  11. CaliberWinfield says:

The Rockers vs. The Rockers & Sockers Connect had me thinking for a good minute. Man, that’d own.

  12. guy incognito says:

    1. Steiners 2. Doom 3. Rockers (I don’t care about “star power” they are the much better team) 4. Demolition

  13. E Dagger says:

I too liked The Rockers over Rock N Sock. I can’t recall who won the match, but remember when Rock ‘N Sock fought the Holly Cousins on Smackdown several years back and Foley turned on Rock? I see these two getting in each other’s way earning The Rockers a fluky victory. That’s my reasoning from a booking standpoint.

I also voted for the Rockers because they were my favorite team growing up. I was a little kid when they were in AWA, and even though I bled WWF, I’d always stop watching All American Wrestling to see them in AWA (which my dad watched). I even used to sign my papers as either “Marty” or “Shawn” depending on my mood in elementary school which confused my teachers.

And just to weigh in here, I also voted for Demolition because I liked them better, their matches were always more entertaining, and they never had a dummy as part of their fold. Well, except Crush, I guess.

  14. flair4dagold says:

As a kid who had access to both the WWF and the NWA in the early/mid/late 80s, I just remember thinking that the Road Warriors were simply unbeatable. I also took a liking to the Demo’s but they just did not carry that same aura for some reason. I also remember that even when the Roadies turned on Dusty, they were still getting cheered at every arena. Being booked as invincible beasts for so long, I guess it was hard for people to see them as heels and in his prime, boy did I love Hawk’s promos. They were awesome.

“Dead men don’t make money.” Road Warriors all the way for me, although I admit that the Demo’s were the better “workers”.

    • Jake Milliman says:

I was watching the AWA in the early 80s when the Road Warriors first appeared there. They were unlike anything else I’d seen and I loved them immediately. Even as heels, they were getting huge face pops at the house shows I went to. One of my favorite memories is a crazy brawl they had with the Freebirds. And also Hawk shoving a guy back three or four rows of seats after the idiot dumped a beer on Hawk. I agree they hung around too long but that’s true of so many other wrestlers.

BTW, I’ve been reading Scott’s stuff for years and this tournament finally got me to register and comment.
