A couple of very close, and a couple of pretty surprising results to start us out here.
- Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo (60%) d. The Powers of Pain (29%).
- The Steiner Brothers (94%) d. The Filthy Animals (5%). Thanks for showing up, guys.
- Unbelievably, Steen/Generico and the Smoking Gunns garnered the exact same number of votes, so they do the old double pin spot and I flip a coin to send the Gunns to the next round with 39% of the vote.
- Doom (69%) d. The Sheepherders (16%). I thought this would be closer since I specified the Sheepherders and not the Bushwackers, but the people have spoken.
- The Rockers (81%) squash The Briscoe Brothers (15%). Maybe I should have left Benoit/Jericho in there after all?
- The Rock N Sock Connection (71%) d. AMW (26%). Another surprise to me, as I thought teamwork would win over star power, but I guess not.
- Demolition (54%) d. The Rock N Roll Express (43%). This one started as a massacre by the Demos, but the RNR gained momentum all through the day. They just couldn’t pull it out, however.
- The Road Warriors (87%) d. The APA (8%).
So for our next round later this week, that’ll give us:
- Windham & Rotundo v. The Steiner Brothers
- Smoking Gunns v. Doom
- Rockers v. Rock N Sock
- Demolition v. The Road Warriors
Stay tuned tonight as I post the voting brackets for the Eddie Gilbert division!
I’m good with those results. I really thought AMW might also get the nod; but I’m guessing that most folks never got to see AMW in their heyday since they didn’t have the spike tv deal in those days.
AMW was ROBBED!!!
Glad to see the Smoking Gunns get a bit of love. Not that I think they’ll go far (though the next match-up is about as good as it can get for them), but I’ve long thought that they were a little underated. Just because Billy Gunn sucked later on doesn’t mean he wasn’t part of a decent tag-team at one point.
And the big Demos-Warriors match-up comes early! Who loses their face paint first?
Whoo! Bring on Demolition v. Road Warriors!
Interesting matchup, but Ax & Smash were WINNERS, whereas Hawk & Animal, as great as they were, didn’t always pick up the victory. Hawk & Animal may be #1 of all time, but that has to do with Longevity, Global Dominance, and selective recollection. Gotta go with the Demos…
I also like the Varsity Club dynamic of the US/Steiner match, and the HBK/Rock Showdown. Rock always did business right, so it wouldn’t shock me to see Jannetty pin him…
I’m still peeved Buzz Sawyer & Matt Bourne didn’t make the cut..
Jannetty pinning the Rock would probably be the greatest moment in my wrestling fan life if it actually happened.
I’m in the stands chanting, “This is awesome!”
Take cover, guys. Scott seems to be having… gasp… FUN!
Hold me.
I’m loving this… as a Scott follower for FOREVER, this is seriously great.
I’m calling Steiners v. Demos as the finals of this bracket. GREATEST! FANTASY TOURNAMENT! EVER~!
Sheepherders vs. Doom was tough, and in the end I went with Sheepherders b/c I thought there were enough power teams, and not enough “hardcore” teams.
The way i was thinking the booking in my head i figured that AMW would fuck over Rock and Sock and send them home early. In a tournament like this i like to give the nod to actual teams instead of superteams.
Doom could have been one of the all time great tag teams. Once they unmasked, they flourished into great heels. Butch Reed could bump n’ beg, Ron Simmons could always work the stick and had great charisma. They had the power, but were smooth, too. It’s a shame they didn’t have a longer career together, because they could have been as good as any team in the tourney.
And, btw, this is indeed the greatest thing ever! I feel like a kid reading PWI and Inside Wrestling again.
The difference being that in these tourneys, anyone could win, whereas I always remember the Apter mags coming down on the NWA’s side in these sort of things more often than not.
