The SmarK Retro Rant for WWF Survivor Series 1993

So since I'm at that point with Monday Night RAW now and the original rant badly needs a redo, here you are. Plus my theater isn't showing Bragging Rights (can you blame them?) and I don't feel like spending $50 on the HD PPV, so this is what you get from me today instead.

- Live from Boston, MA.

- Your hosts are Vince and for the last time on a WWF PPV, Bobby Heenan.

Judges on crack, film at 11

So I know everyone’s talking about the bullshit decision for Machida tonight, but unfortunately I was working late tonight and couldn’t see UFC.  What I DID finally see, airing late at night on TSN2, was a replay of the WEC show with the Cerrone-Henderson fight from last month.  And holy FUCK what a fight!  Ben Henderson was like a freak of nature, escaping stuff that no human being should have been able to survive intact.  But Cerrone controlled the whole fight outside of some parts of the middle rounds, so I still don’t get where the decision for Henderson came from.  I mean, yeah, the guy put on an amazing clinic and deserves respect for it, but Cerrone had that thing wrapped up and should have tapped any other fighter on the planet with the kimora in the last minute of round 5.  I think Mir on commentary summed it up best when Cerrone was bending Henderson’s arm back at an angle not intended by nature and Henderson gave the thumbs-up and promptly escaped, and Mir just goes “Holy god, Jesus!” along with everyone else at home, totally at a loss for any other words.  WOW.

Oh yeah, John Cena v. Randy Orton on Sunday, in their fourth PPV main event in a row.  For an hour.  Gee, I wonder why males 18-34 are all watching UFC now?

Vince forgives all too, apparently.

I guess all it took for Luger to get back into the WWE’s good graces was total paralysis and finding Jesus.  Randy Savage, take note.

More Fun with Linda

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Man, y’all almost lost my services this morning, as my laptop is now a Gateway paperweight (along with my 50% completed Star Trek Season 2 review) and this morning my monitor finally decided to die after slowly getting LCD cancer for the past 4 months or so.  Luckily I was able to replace it with a brand new one and thus keep all my readers from having to find their entertainment elsewhere.

Anyway, on with the mail…

http://community.livejournal.com/ontd_political/4421910.html
Apparently the WWE is using Linda's run for elected audience to make another round to scrub all WWE material from Youtube, this time with them targetting clips from all of the really batshit crazy angles they've done over the years that would be used against Linda. Stuff like Katey Vick, Edge and Lita live sex celebration, etc...

Well, they’re certainly within their rights to do so, especially since they run both an online and a TV channel featuring nothing but their library clips and they might still wish people to pay money for those.  I mean, yeah, we know the real reason for their actions, but I’m with WWE on this one.  This is only the smallest bit of heat Linda is going to face, however.  I mean, just watching the political commercials and seeing what kind of dirt people dig up for the smallest elections, it’s obvious that someone is gonna run a smear campaign and destroy her.

Worst blades

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Im sitting here reading a passage from your book, Tonight In This Very Ring. Im at the part where you reviewed Taker vs Bossman from WrestleMania XV in the "Heck in the Cell" match. You mentioned that Bossman did a 0.0000004 Muta Scale bladejob. I started thinking back to the 1991 match where the Muta Scale originated. Then I started thinking about American matches that come close to it. My top 3 would be: a) Eddie Guerrero at Judgment Day 2004, b) John Cena at Judgment Day 2005, and c) Ric Flair at Taboo Tuesday 2005. What would you think would be the worst US bladejob?
Michael

Lex Luger at Great American Bash 88, because it was not only a wussy cut, but it totally invalidated the finish as well and made everyone look bad.

46 out of 53, as I missed a couple of UK shows and a couple of the newer ones.  Really had to work my brain for this one, though, which was nice.

Fuji

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

So this past weekend I was inspired by Captain Lou’s passing as well as some water cooler talk about “the best manager” to rent the WWE World’s Greatest Wrestling Managers DVD. I enjoyed the look back at the greats, it's a fun rental. However I was surprised that someone like Paul Heyman got a substantial amount of spotlight as a manager in the AWA whereas Mr. Fuji, who despite the inclusion of Fuji Vice in the extras, didn’t get much attention at all. He’s managed many champions and was a part of the WWF/E for many, many years.

Why do you think he got the snub?

Because he was a terrible manager, mainly I’d guess.  Yeah, he was a great guy and decent worker and an easy source of heat, but it’s not like he was adding much to guys like Muraco or Demolition who could already talk for themselves just fine.  There’s not really any highlight reel of catchphrases or great interviews from him to focus on, either, like you get with Jimmy Hart, Bobby Heenan or Freddie Blassie.    He was really just a shorthand way for the promotion to establish that someone on the borderline of crowd reactions is DEFINITELY a heel.  Like Berzerker, where people didn’t really know whether to cheer or boo the act, so they stuck Fuji with him randomly and people were like “Oh, it’s Fuji, let’s boo him.”

That being said, much love to him for his sense of humor and being around all those years, plus of course for Fuji Vice.

I think I ought to start drawing up plenty of quickie divorce papers
just in case.

You know, I was just thinking to myself, “Man, Facebook really needs a good time-wasting game, because that’s the one thing it’s been lacking.”  I’d even take a Facebook version of Civ 2 and be deliriously happy and addicted all over again.

Haterade

Hey, Scott I am a big fan of yours and I pretty much have all of your books.  Don't you think you are being unfair to TNA when you make a comment like Nigel McGuiness being in TNA  "sets him back about 100 steps right out of the gate."

You've admitted that You don't even watch TNA.  So how can you say that being in TNA is bad for him when TNA is producing the best wrestling product since 2005.  They had an excellent pay per view (Bound for Glory).  Their Impact show has been excellent for the past couple of months. Their champion is a home grown talent, A J. Styles.  They are showcasing tons of young talent (Eric Young, Hernandez, British Invasion).

You predicted that they would sign WWE rejects like Chris Masters, and Mr. Kennedy.  Masters is back with the WWE and Kennedy has sign with no one.

Why the hate?  I don't get it.

Really?  Do I really need to list the reasons why Vince Russo running a supposedly major company filled with goofy gimmick matches and WWE retreads wouldn’t appeal to me?

And I have honestly never heard the words “TNA Impact” and “excellent” in the same sentence before, but I’m glad you’re enjoying the product.
