OK, so after giving this about 5 minutes of total thought, here’s my 64 team field for the first annual Scott’s Stupid Dream Tag Team Tournament. This is not in any particular order, it’s just 64 teams I could think of off the top of my head who are pretty cool and probably deserve slots here. If there’s any more deserving you can think of, now is the time to nominate them. I’m just gonna end up randomly seeding them and letting people vote in a poll to determine the winner. The criteria will be entirely up to you. Vote for your favorite, the ones who were the best workers, the ones you’d think would win a real fight, whatever.
The nominated teams:
1. The Road Warriors
2. Demolition
3. The British Bulldogs
4. The Hart Foundation
5. The Midnight Express
6. The Rock N Roll Express
7. The Killer Bees
8. The Brain Busters
9. The Nasty Boys
10. Money, Inc.
11. The Steiner Brothers
12. The Heavenly Bodies
13. Sting & Lex Luger
14. The Outsiders
15. Harlem Heat
16. The Public Enemy
17. The Natural Disasters
18. The Quebecers
19. The Headshrinkers
20. The Smoking Gunns
21. The Godwinns
22. The Rockers
23. The New Age Outlaws
24. The Rock N Sock Connection
25. The Dudley Boyz
26. Edge & Christian
27. The Hardy Boyz
28. Kane & Undertaker
29. The Hollywood Blonds
30. The Miz & John Morrison
31. Terry Gordy & Steve Williams
32. Doug Furnas & Phil LaFon
33. Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo
34. The High Flyers
35. Jesse Ventura & Adrian Adonis
36. Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage
37. Shawn Michaels & Diesel
38. Shawn Michaels & HHH
39. The Fantastics
40. The Sheepherders / Bushwackers
41. Dusty Rhodes & Nikita Koloff
42. Ole & Arn Anderson
43. Owen Hart & The British Bulldog
44. The Eliminators
45. Butch Reed & Ron Simmons
46. Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake
47. Rick Martel & Tom Zenk
48. Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez
49. Ivan & Nikita Koloff
50. The Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff
51. Warlord & Barbarian
52. Paul Roma & Jim Powers
53. Paul Roma & Hercules
54. Pat Tanaka & Paul Diamond
55. Michael Hayes & Jimmy Garvin
56. Billy Kidman & Rey Mysterio
57. Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas
58. Bryan Clarke & Bryan Adams
59. Justin Credible & Lance Storm
60. Rob Van Dam & Sabu
61. The Gangstas
62. Chris Benoit & Chris Jericho
63. Chris Jericho & Lance Storm
64. Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke
Even though they haven’t been around very long, I think Jericho & Big Show are doing some things that will be remembered down the road. I’d put them on there.
I’ve got the New Age Outlaws taking this whole thing, for the record… and I’m sort of serious. Though Doom and The Steiners have always held a special place in my heart.
ROH’s Briscoe Brothers definitely deserve a slot.
SECOND.
I’d also include:
* The American Wolves
* Austin Aries & Roderick Strong
* Kevin Steen & El Generico
Which leaves us the question, who to cut, right? Simple:
* Kronik
* The Godwinns
* Power & Glory
* The Young Stallions
I agree the Briscoes should’ve been in this.
THE HOLLYWOOD BLONDS~!
Second.
#29
As much as I rip into TNA, I can’t help but nominate some of their best teams ever.
- BEER MONEY.
- AMERICA’S MOST WANTED (AMW)
- LATIN AMERICAN XCHANGE (LAX)
- STYLES AND DANIELS.
Second again.
On the cut list, I’ll nominate Furnas & Lafon, Gangstas, Godwinns, FBI, & Jericho & Storm.
Furnas & Lafon were fantastic in Japan. They just had too many injuries when they finally made it to the WWF in ‘96 was it? or ‘97? They were an excellent tag team.
Third. Not a huge fan of Beer Money or LAX, but these are all good teams too. Better than the Godwinns or Little Guido and Tony Mamaluke.
I second the top three, all great teams. Styles and Daniels are midgets.
I’d have to say The Rock & Sock. Just because I hate tag-team wrestling, yet they always entertained me.
- Caliber
scrublife.wordpress.com – looking back at an old Nitro, you know, the one where The Bulldog debuted. Oh, and why you should have a license to have a kid. Plus, a story of how I kicked a whole families ass. I rule.
Although my knowledge is limited to basically WWE teams within the past 20 years…
- Strike Force (Rick Martel & Tito Santana)
- Los Guerreros (Chavo & Eddie)
In terms of missing teams, I’m surprised not to see a few:
- The Wild Samoans
- The Fabulous Freebirds (the Hayes, Gordy, Roberts version)
- The Rougeau Brothers
- Strike Force (Martel and Santana)
- The Moondogs
- The APA
- Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood
Also, just wondering which version of The Midnight Express you’d include, or would you perhaps even include both of them?
I think you should take out 56 or 64 and plug in Andre the Giant and Haku.
After watching several of their matches on WWE Classics, I’m going to nominate Adrian Adonis and Dick Murdoch. WWF Tag Team Champions from April 17th, 1984 to Jan. 21st, 1985. Both were excellent workers, could work different styles, and compete against different types of teams. I’d certainly rank them above Paul Roma and whomever, Rick Martel & Tom Zenk, Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke, & The Gangstas.
Oh, Oh,…who could forget the former WCW World Tag Team Champions (and the two best tag team wrestlers of all-time) Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton!!!!
I think it would be cool to limit each wrestler to just one appearance, this would make more room for additional teams. For example, for me, I don’t need Shawn Michaels in any other tag team outside of the Rockers.
That’s dumb. Too many other great teams would be excluded because of that “rule.”
It’s not dumb. It’s called a challenge. I love when Scott used to do his “super ppv” fantasy cards in which he could only use one match per wrestler.
I was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately, you could fill the Top 64 with 10-12 different combonations including Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton.
I would probably limit Arn to teaming with Tully (The BrainBusters) and Eaton to teaming with Stan Lane (The Midnight Express). While I love The Fabulous Ones (Lane/Steve Keirn) they simply lose out to the greatness of the Midnights. This would also allow Dennis Condrey to enter with Randy Rose as the ‘Original’ Midnight Express. I’m going to assume The Heavenly Bodies will be Del Ray/Pritchard.
The Freebirds would need to be Hayes/Garvin, freeing up Gordy to team with Dr. Death (MVC!).
The Smoking Gunns will be eliminated in favor of the New Age Outlaws.
Dusty Rhodes/Magnum TA would leave Nikita to team with Ivan Koloff.
Going back to the Anderson’s for a moment, it should be Ole/Gene.
As for Jericho, I would give Storm to Chris Candido, and let Jericho team with Benoit. OR, if you would prefer JeriShow, then Benoit could team with Dean Malenko.
Oh, and Los Guerreros is a MUST. Depending on the draw, I’m sure they could Lie, Cheat, and Steal their way to at least the second round or third round.
Unless, one would prefer teaming Chavo with Chavo Classic, thus entering La Pareja del Terror (with Art Barr).
Can’t go wrong either way.
Owen Hart and Yokozuna would be a tough team to beat in most situations. The big huge monster and the great mat based wrestler – who could also do stuff off the ropes as well.
When Owen and Yoko first teamed up, I was excited and thought we would see a different sort of tag team formula with the babyfaces doubleteaming Owen, as Owen becomes the heel-in-peril because the babyfaces wouldn’t want anything to do with Yoko. They sort of teased that formula at WMXI, but after that Owen & Yoko just became another generic heel team.
I’d nom Owen and Yoko too, although Yoko wasn’t in his prime by that point… Some others:
Bruno and Dick the Bruiser–’Annihilation Inc.’ (Eve if you haven’t seen the team, you’ve seen both of them. They were really popular, apparently)
Enforcers (Zbyszko/Anderson)
If we have the Mega Powers, why not the Mega-Bucks?
Benoit/Angle
Guerreros (Eddie/Chavo)
Rougeaus
The Wild Samoans. They belong there a lot more than the Headshrinkers.
Ric Flair and Greg Valentine
‘Dirty’ Dick Slater and ‘Dirty’ Dick Murdoch
Randy Orton and Edge
Kind of surprised at the lack of either Los Guerreros or Eddie Guerrero & Art Barr.
And I think after this one Scott should do a Wacky Tag Team Champions Who Hate Each Other tournament.
The toughest team to beat on this list in terms of booking and star power is the MegaPowers. In order to beat this team, Hogan and Savage must turn on eachother in order for the other team to get a win on them.
#62… Why doesn’t poor Chris Jericho have a tag partner? I don’t think he will win this tournament all by himself…
That ceased being funny a long time ago.
Can you give me a date it stopped being funny and proof that it stopped being funny. Because i don’t believe you. If more than just one person(you) would have pointe dit out, i would have believed, but right now i just have to be under the impression that you are a comedic zilch.
I nominate The Steiner Brothers.
Cool list. Which Midnight Express and which Heavenly Bodies? I also think that The Orient Express (Kato & Tanaka) should be part of it and face Badd Company (Diamond & Tanaka). What the heck. You might as well have Power & Glory vs Young Stallions, Shawn & Diesle vs Shawn & Triple-H, Benoit & Jericho vs Jericho & Storm, and Owen & Davey Boy vs British Bulldogs. Come to think of it, why no love for Benoit & Malenko, Benoit & Angle, Edge & Rey, or Eddie & Chavo?
I also nominate the team of Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit.
I also didn’t see Bret Hart & Owen Hart, even if they only wrestled a few matches together as a tag team.
Edge and Christian…. innovators of the TLC matches, clearly the most entertaining in terms of chemistry and promo abilities.
Based purely on in ring work it has to be the Steiners. As much as I liked the Hart Foundation, Bulldogs and Rockers… the Steiners were just total badasses who could put on ***** if asked.
1) Edge and Christian
2) Steiners
3) Rockers
4) Hart Foundation
5) Road Warriors
Jericho and Big Show deserve mentioning because they have been fantastic together and have single handily made the tag belts the TOP titles in wrestling for the moment (who would of ever thought that?)…. The moment they lose those titles will be a bigger moment than any world titles at present.
Needs Kobashi and Misawa. Oh and no Masters of the Powerbomb?
Are Japanese teams ruled out? If not I’d nominate:
- Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi
- Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue
- Steve Williams & Johnny Ace
- Hiroshi Hase & Kensuke Sasaki
- Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima
- Shinjiro Ohtani & Koji Kanemoto
- KENTA & Naomichi Marufuji
- Kotoru Suzuki & Ricky Marvin
I definetely agree that the following teams should be in:
the Briscoes (Jay and Mark)
Beer Money and/or AMW
Los Guerreros
Strike Force
And Scott, this is a serious challenge, but you should actually write up brief synopsis’ of the tournament “matches” just for fun.
Angle and Benoit and Los Guerreros should definitely be included.
If we’re gonna nominate Rated RKO who I only recall feuding with DX, we may as well nominate Priceless/The Legacy as well.
Wait wait wait. I want to veto Rated RKO. They were together solely for a single feud that fell apart because of a Triple H injury. Their teamwork wasn’t great, I can’t recall a single memorable match, and their run was pretty darn short and, and I may be alone in feeling this, unmemorable.
By the way, this is a blast.
I just finished the How I Met Your Mother episode “The Bracket,” and it completely reminded me of this.
Every tournaments need #16 seeds
The Mulkeys
The Conquistadors
Barry Horowitz/Iron Mike Sharpe
Los Villanos V/VI
No Owen Hart and Koko B. Ware? For shame sir! For shame!
I think it would be cool to have 1 or 2 New Japan tag teams in there. The only thing is which combo(s) do you use? Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Masahiro Chono, or Keiji Mutoh and Chono? Or Chono/Sasake, Hase/Sasake, Hase/Chono, etc…
The first team that came to mind that I guessed most wouldn’t include but I would is Rey and Kidman. I think it was short lived but they have some amazing matches.
C’mon, kids. Are we forgetting a tag team that not only revolutionized tag-teaming, but the very sport it’s written on? A tag-team who’s members went on to the zenith of heights in singles competition as well as tag. A tag-team with a great fashion, and super rugged masculinity. Not to mention the GREATEST theme song ever.
Who do I speak of? You fools, none other….
THE AMERICAN MALES!
Another one I’m surprised isn’t on here already that was actually a pretty big name for a lot of years…..
The APA
And I would put the SkySkrapers in there ahead of Kronik.
And Bad Company, AWA version. Paul Diamond and Pat Tanaka. Actually the Calgary version of Pillman and Hart wasn’t half bad, either.
#54
I think we should expand this field to 96 or 128…
Teams I would add:
Ron Garvin & Barry Windham (pretty bad ass team, former US tag champs)
Ron Garvin & Jimmy Garvin (because you can never have too many Garvins!)
Some team with Tony Garea (Garea and Rick Martel?)
The Wild Samoans
The Islanders (Haku and Tama, High Chief Afi not required)
Tom Zenk & Brian Pillman
Andre the Giant & Haku
The Mulkeys (Greatest jobber tag team of all time!)
First heels I ever liked – Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez, who kept the Rock N Roll Express at bay for the tag belts for a while. I’ll throw them in, and second the Garvin & Windham team.
Rude & Fernandez are already listed as #48.
If we’re gonna have The Mulkeys, we need a suitable first round opponent for them…while thinking of the greatest WWE jobber tag teams, only one name really comes to mind…LOS CONQUISTADORS~!
I’d rather see the long awaited Mulkeys vs Gladiators rematch. Then again, for all we know, the Gladiators and Conquistadors may well be one and the same…
Well Dunn.
Ding Dongs.
Any combination of the Hillbilly Horsemen: Jim, Elmer, Luke and Junior.
Fuji and Toru Tanaka
Lawler and Dundee
PG-13
Jeff Jarrett and Matt Borne
Blackjacks (Mulligan and Lanza)
Skyskrapers (Sid and Spivey)
Steamboat and Youngblood
Dusty and Dick Murdoch
Roddy Piper and Bob Orton
Twin Towers (Akeem and Big Bossman)
Terry and Dory Funk
Jindrak and O’Haire
Jumping Bomb Angels (chicks, I know, but still better than Young Stallions)
Where’s the love for World Class? Chris Adams & Gino Hernandez should be in there, plus (under Freebird Rules) any combination of Kerry, Kevin and David von Erich.
Off the top of my head:
The Funk Brothers (Terry and Dorry Jr.) deserve a shot.
Stan Hansen and Bruiser Brody may be the biggest wrecking crew team ever.
The Miracle Violence connection (Terry Gordy and Steve Williams) were also quite unstoppable.
Piper and Bob Orton Jr. should also get a nod.
