Precious Plug

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Hi, Scott,
I have a book that's just been published called The Lord of the Films,
and I was wondering if I could have a plug on your blog. It's by ECW
Press, and it's all about The Lord of the Rings movies. It has tons of
photos and illustrations, exclusive interviews with the filmmakers,
details about the upcoming prequels, and it tells you all the onstage,
sidestage, and backstage happenings related to the amazing Lord of the
Rings trilogy. Its amazon page is here:
http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Films-Unofficial-Tolkiens-Middle-Earth/dp/1550228900
I promise that fans of the films will not be disappointed by my effort.
Best wishes,
J.W.

Enjoy.

Dunno how many people have been turned onto this super-addictive time-wasting site, but I love it and it’s my go-to now to blow 10 minutes or so at a time.  Basically it gives you two movie titles, you rank which one is your favorite, and repeat thousands of times until you have a list of all-time great movies compiled.  You can then filter by only top 250, top 100, top 20, etc., to further narrow down the matchups and decide once and for all if “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was superior to “Fellowship of the Ring” or which “Kill Bill” was better.  (Answers:  No, and volume 2)

The thing is, though, random chance means that some titles get screwed over because the matchups just aren’t right.  My current top 20 is pretty accurate, but Star Wars Episode IV is currently at something like 109 because it just never comes up against any of the big guns and thus I can’t vote it to #1.  Ditto for The Dark Knight, which should be at least in the Top 20 and just doesn’t come up enough to get past 95 or whatever it’s at right now in my list.  You definitely come to some interesting realizations when you’re forced to compare movies directly like this – for instance, I discovered that I like Seven and Shawshank Redemption better than a whole lot of movies I previously thought I liked a lot.  The way I’ve been taking the matchups is “On a desert island, which one would I rather have with me?”  That’s probably why Lord of the Rings is so high on the list, because of the replay value.  I also discovered that I really like the X-Men movies more than I thought I did, so that’s something.

Now where the hell is the Godfather…

Michael’s Extreme Review

Michael's Extreme Review #7

Before we get started, a few words on ECW's offering of SummerSlam. I actually took the time to watch my first WWE pay per view since WrestleMania this year. I now know why. I listened to the Wrestling Observer radio show on the way to the bar where I watched SummerSlam and they said that the ECW title match could steal the show. Ever since I started doing this review, I have taken a special interest in the ECW offering to these pay per views. Well, I can't say that I am surprised as to how they handled Christian and Regal after seeing some of the other matches. MVP vs Swagger and Khali vs Kane were not necessary. Plus DX having a 15 minute intro? No wonder they ran low on time. I vote for them moving the ECW title match to 2nd on the card and maybe this shit won't happen again! Then again, maybe they were going for 8 FUCKING SECONDS! With that being said...

Rise and fall of WCW

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Scott,

Hope you can post this on your blog if you see fit.

I hope you get around to reviewing the new Rise & Fall of WCW DVD set in the near future.  After reading longtime blog participant Charlie's rave review of it, I was psyched to get this (not to mention the fact that NWA/WCW will always be my favorite promotion).  To say that I am disappointed in the documentary is the biggest understatement ever.  SO much was glossed over or never mentioned at all.  What made the Rise & Fall of ECW set so great was how it focused on the different wrestlers and their impact on the company.  This is nonexistant in this set.  No bios or history whatsoever on legendary guys like the Road Warriors, Rock n' Roll Express, Midnight Express/Cornette, Sting, Luger, Koloff, Steiners, etc.  No mention of concepts like the Bunkhouse Stampede, War Games, or Skywalkers.  The departure of the Radicals, the Flair/Bischoff feud, the HUGE signing of Bret Hart - all left out of the DVD.  What the hell kind of rush job was this?  For a company with such a storied history and such legendary wrestlers, this documentary is inexcusably bad.  In no way, shape, or form does it surpass the ECW set.  At least we get some great matches on DVD.

Can't wait to read your review.  Keep up the good work.

Well, DVD-wise I just bought the first two volumes of the Summerslam Anthology off of Amazon, so I’m a bit tapped out in that regard and the WCW set wasn’t high on my list to begin with.  There are of course ways around that, which I shall explore because now I’m really curious to see just what’s up with this documentary.

While I’m on the topic of the Anthology…

- I know it’s a neater system for them to divide it up into 5 shows per set, but 1999-2008 are already available on DVD, which means that now I have 88-97 and 99-2005 and I’m STILL missing a DVD-quality version of 98, and that kind of drives me nuts.  I don’t need volume 3 because I already have four of the shows on DVD and I can’t just buy 98 by itself.

- For those who have it already, are the early shows PPV versions ala 24/7 or the edited Coliseum versions?

IC title

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Hi Scott,
Having recently seen Rey Mysterio re-establish the IC title on Smackdown, I was wondering when you (and your readers) think it lost its significance. I always thought it lost its lustre after the HBK-Douglas-Ramon incident and then became meaningless after Rocky dropped it at Summerslam 1998. But I've spoken to some people who trace it back to Diesel's reign whilst others say it was when Austin threw it in the river. Thoughts?

The river was a great angle.  I’ll give you the death of the belt:  1999 and the million stupid meaningless title changes that no one cared about, resulting in stuff like “IC champion Godfather” and “IC Champion Edge for 24 hours”.

I can personally testify that I was completely sick of that title by the end of the year and no longer cared about it.
