People have been e-mailing me about this all day, so I figured I’d comment. And I think that comic nerds are over-reacting just a tad (as you’d expect), as I don’t think the Mouse is gonna swoop in and suddenly start giving a shit about the comics division. I’m thinking that Disney’s board finds more change in their couch than Marvel takes in from comics in a month. Really, the money here is from the movie division, thanks to the ultra-brilliant idea of creating an independent movie studio and shopping to individual studios. Disney wants the rights to the characters, not the ability to mess with the comics that not many people actually read anyway.
Plus, come on, Pixar doing a CGI Fantastic Four movie? MADE OF WIN.

Since Pixar already did “The Incredibles”, sign me up for a Pixar created “Avengers”. That is made of win.
Nah. Keep the original plan, live action and with the stars of the other related movies. MONEY OUT THE WAZOO from putting all in one box set.
Though, since we all know they have a permanent hard-on for D2V, that will mean there’ll be no shortage of DVD Marvel movies, probably animated. Which has its possibilities. Hopefully they’ll still be like Hulk Vs., by people who “get it” and they’ll still be allowed to be edgy when needed.
DC comics is owned by Warner Bros but they don’t make Superman fight Elmer Fudd.
Everyone hears the name “Disney” and thinks ‘family entertainment’ or some such bullshit.
Do you know what else Disney owns? Miramax, which did the Kill Bill films, Pulp Fiction, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, all of Kevin Smith’s movies…
Do I even need to go on?
Nerds, you’re so fucking ignorant. Nothing is going to happen to your precious comic books.
Not a comic book fan, Charlie?
I am, I’m not worried about Disney taking over Marvel. Especially for content reasons. Marvel will probably put out comics related to Disney properties and characters but that’s not a big deal. I’m hoping there’s a bigger presence of old marvel properties on Disney TV now. Also, maybe some quality Marvel animation?
I understand the knee-jerk reaction, though I don’t think you should ever express that reaction. Why would Disney buy Marvel to change everything about it?

Who do you think they are? WWE?
And the Disney comics makes me think…maybe Disney will have Marvel put out collections of old Barks comics? That might be cool.
“Not a comic book fan, Charlie?”
Actually I used to read comics as a kid, DC comics mostly, but I grew sick of them around the time they were doing Zero Hour. And these days with one new ‘Crisis’ after another you practically need a flow chart to understand what’s going on. The only comic I actively read is Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8. Which is dragging ass these days.
I gotta say, wretling writers calling anyone else a nerd is pretty lol.
Um, actually….

I’m glad Marvel, on its own, never did anything like this, like, um, the Punisher crossing over with Archie. Oh wait…
Yeah see also: the already boring “Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Bros. to be new Fantastic Four” jokes.
(Though Cyrus would probably still be better than Jessica Alba)
I mentioned this on my facebook but I think it bears repeating: Joe Quesada deserves a lot of credit. He gets a lot of shit (some of it deserved in the wake of One More Day but most of it undeserved) but when he took over as the EIC Marvel was just coming out of bankruptcy. I started reading write as he was taking over and remember dark days of Chuck Austen writing Cap and Avengers. Now almost every high-profile book has a high-profile writer.
Another good thing is, HOPEFULLY this means that it inspires Disney to get off its asses and FINALLY release DVDs of Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, the ‘82 Hulk series, and others.
In fact, I bet that has to partially be why they did this…to avert the whole mess with the rights to their animation department.
I know I joked about it in a previous blog entry, but yeah, not very concerned about it. But the overall cost of the purchase is pretty staggering when you consider that 20 years ago it was owned by the likes of Ron Perelman (not the actor) and on the verge of being bought by Carl Icahn.
The other thing is, I think, the old “Indy = Good, Corporate/Mainstream = BAD” mentality. You know the one.
That and I guess we’ve all seen what WB can do with DC at their worst, and that since they own the rights to the characters, they could do that all the live long day.
Let me put it this way…Maybe the Marvel fans fear Disney causing similar, like “Joel Schumacher presents Spider-Man Forever, and Spider-Man & Mary Jane.” Or She-Hulk starring Halle Berry?
Crappy movies are going to happen. We don’t have to worry for a while because Disney still has to honor the existing Marvel contracts
Well once that happens, as long as they let Marvel keep their creative control with the movies, and let them use people who “get it,” then I won’t panic. Whereas WB has to be lucky if the people they select are ones that “get it.” Like Chris Nolan. Others? (Schumacher? Pitof?) Not so much.
Are we pretending for the sake of this argument that Daredevil, Hulk and Fantastic Four were good movies?
Which Hulk movie were you referring to or did you dislike both of them? I preferred the second one myself as the first one was just too slow for my tastes.
The first one. Second one is as good as TDK or Iron Man until the last 20 mins or so. Abomination was terrible.
I was referring to the ones so far that they’ve done more or less being in control (Iron Man, Incredible Hulk…basically what’s leading to The Avengers) and not having to answer to the studio so much.
I can’t wait for Wolverine and the Seven Dwarfs.
As I said before, since Disney has the rights to the Touchstone TV library, they can not only do a crossover comic with Deadpool and Bea Arthur, but all four Golden Girls. EPIC F’N WIN.
