Dunno how many people have been turned onto this super-addictive time-wasting site, but I love it and it’s my go-to now to blow 10 minutes or so at a time. Basically it gives you two movie titles, you rank which one is your favorite, and repeat thousands of times until you have a list of all-time great movies compiled. You can then filter by only top 250, top 100, top 20, etc., to further narrow down the matchups and decide once and for all if “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was superior to “Fellowship of the Ring” or which “Kill Bill” was better. (Answers: No, and volume 2)
The thing is, though, random chance means that some titles get screwed over because the matchups just aren’t right. My current top 20 is pretty accurate, but Star Wars Episode IV is currently at something like 109 because it just never comes up against any of the big guns and thus I can’t vote it to #1. Ditto for The Dark Knight, which should be at least in the Top 20 and just doesn’t come up enough to get past 95 or whatever it’s at right now in my list. You definitely come to some interesting realizations when you’re forced to compare movies directly like this – for instance, I discovered that I like Seven and Shawshank Redemption better than a whole lot of movies I previously thought I liked a lot. The way I’ve been taking the matchups is “On a desert island, which one would I rather have with me?” That’s probably why Lord of the Rings is so high on the list, because of the replay value. I also discovered that I really like the X-Men movies more than I thought I did, so that’s something.
Now where the hell is the Godfather…
