Not sure if you have seen this Scott but WWE is running a survey on what people would like to see in future DVD releases. Choices include Jericho and Steamboat (my two favorites of the dozen or so they listed) to some of your favorite concepts like War Games and Clash of Champions to the trendy (a Best of Brock Lesnar) to the downright bizarre (like a best of John Morrison – really?). At the end they also have a blank submission form where you can suggest stuff not on the list. I propose we martial your readership’s forces to get either a Midnight Express or Fabulous Freebirds dvd out there.
Anyways here’s the link:
http://www.wweresearch.com/se.ashx?s=0B880140725437F7
and actually this brings up a question since your readership does love lists of what would your top 10 dvd wish list be (given the actual footage in the WWE library)
Yup, saw it and voted for Best of Wargames, Best of Ricky Steamboat and Best of Clash as my “Definitely would buy choices.” Write-in was Best of Midnight Express.
Best of WarGames wins hands down. There’s no excuse for them to only have included ONE of these matches on DVD so far. And I second Scott on the Midnight Express DVD – that would almost be too awesome for words. You could have an entire disc of just Cornette interviews and I’d still be a happy man.
Isn’t it 3 matches so far? The 96 one was on the nWo DVD, the 87 one was on the Horsemen DVD, and the 91 one was on the Pillman DVD, I think.
You know, you may be right. I forgot about the ones on the nWo and Horsemen DVDs, both of which I own. D’oh! The only one I remembered was the one in the Pillman set.
the War Games DVD is one of the examples where the set should have come out earlier. now with their now PG policy the matches have would be butchered like crazy (for an example the new tag teams set: in the Survivor Series 2001 match (Dudleyz vs. Hardy boys) the at the point where Stacy shows off her ass to the ref (Nick Patrick, I guess) another, way more “harmless” camera angle is used and if you didn’t already know the match it’s hard to get what’s happening there.
They do the same thing on the SNME DVD in the Cena/Edge match, they try to avoid showing Lita the entire match because of the shirt she was wearing. Not a reason not to buy, but annoying nontheless.
Surely a Sting DVD would be worthwhile once he gets out of TNA, give him a year contract, sell the DVD and get ‘dream’ matches against Cena, HHH, Orton, Batista and extend the Undertaker win streak at WM26.
Until the rights to the name “Ricky Steamboat” were settled, I was afraid that Steamboat was destined to be the guy who showed up in everyone else’s “best of” DVD sets, but never got his own.
I’d be all for a Best of WarGames but who really wants to watch an entire black and white disk? You know WWE will just edit out anything remotely un-PG. And seriously, a John Morrison dvd? The guy is good and all but what’re they going to do to fill up the disks? Show the entire season of Tough Enough he was on?
My write in was
“Just please release all past WWE/WCW/ECW Pay Per Views on DVD already. What’s the matter, you don’t want to make money? Well… I guess the Invasion angle proved that you don’t, but still…”
Off topic, but Charlie, when are you going to review the Allied Powers Tag Team set?
You too, Scott?
Oh crispy crap…I didn’t scroll all the way down. D’oh
Mmmmmmmmmmmm Crispy Crap. *drools*
It just took awhile because sometimes I have a tough time getting through those themed DVDs. I swear back in 2007 I was half-way through the ladder match set when I simply lost interest. It’s just too many damn ladder matches to review in one sitting.
My fill-in answer was “Wrestling’s Greatest Rivalries.” They could have a field day with that one.
My fill-in was Best of Madison Square Garden. Think about the history there and all the great things that could be in there.
You know, I actually don’t think that’s a good idea, because EVERY classic wrestler DVD now has a few Madison Square Garden classics matches.
True, but considering the sheer amount of shows that have run there in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, there is a wealth of matches that could be chosen. In fact, MSG network pretty much has its own show that features classic WWE MSG events.
I guess you could do a best of Philly Spectrum, Boston Garden as well.
Frankly, Im shocked Jericho doesn’t have a DVD yet. That could be awesome, especially considering he’s one of the few guys on the roster that has been putting on ****+ classics in the past two years.
He had some good matches in ECW, his 1998 WCW run was fantastic, good matches with Triple H in 2000, great matches with the Rock in 2001. Had a strong 2003 & 2004 with Christian leading into WrestleMania XX. He was involved in at least one bitchin match with Cena in 2005, sure he had others. And the last year, he’s had a couple classics with HBK, Mysterio and a couple good tv matches with CM Punk & Jeff Hardy. I think that DVD would be an easy winner…though it might be tough to sell since he’s the best heel going right now.
True story: a lot of matches that fans consider good, the WWE considers crap. Jericho vs. Triple H from Fully Loaded 2000, for example. Allegedly Vince McMahon said Jericho had “Jerio-bombed.” Not sure what prompted that, but it’s why Jericho was basically buried following the match.
WWE is funny that way. They actually consider Undertaker vs. Yokozuna from the 94 Royal Rumble one of the best matches ever, but think Jericho/Trips from Fully Loaded was a disaster. Thankfully the video department seems to have more common sense then many of the brain trust in the WWE do.
I want the Jericho-HHH with the Dusty finish from RAW uncut. Too bad we won’t get Jericho/Benoit-Austin/HHH tag title change on dvd. I’d love to check that out uncut.
BTW, maybe someone can answer this, do they keep RAW/Smackdown matches uncut now? I know they didn’t in the past.
I don’t think so. I’ve argued in the past that if the cameras keep rolling between the commercials, why not just save all the footage and release them in full when they hit DVD? Ah well…
Well, I haven’t seen Jericho vs. HHH, but it makes sense that they would be more concerned with projecting whatever image they’re trying to convey, rather than them putting on a technical wrestling classic (obviously those 2 in 2000 are going to put on a good match). I was a young kid, i.e. their target demographic, in ‘94 and I remember being completely absorbed in that RR casket match.
And I don’t know if it’s “common sense” in the video department so much as them just trying to cater to a different audience than they do with their current product. At least I know I eat up their DVD releases.. while I don’t watch the current product at all.
My fill in answer was Best of Ted Dibiase. Everybody has a price.
Write in for me was Owen Hart: King of Harts.
Definitely want season sets of RAW/SD, and would much appreciate older WWF/WCW PPVs, possibly in half year box sets.
Agreed. An Owen Hart set is really overdo.
But I put down that I want all the PPVs on DVD because most of the best matches happened on PPV.
That said, if there’s ONE MATCH that I could get on disc, clean and not recorded off of a copied VHS tape, it’s Bret & Owen vs. the Steiners from some old Colosseum video.
would you be interested in a DVD made from the actual Coliseum Video? I include an interactive menu with chapter breaks. Let me know!
My write-in was also a season set of Raw/SD. They did videos on the ‘Best of Raw’ for 1998, 1999 and 2000 but for some reason stopped thereafter. I realise these were the best years but there were still enough great moments in the years after to put on video. I guess they’d have to leave out 2004 though.
Is that what they’re proposing? I saw “Best of,” and assumed it’d be what they deem to be best. I’d like all of season 1.
As far as the choices, I picked WCW-related ones like War Games, Clash, Sting and Goldberg, though I’d probably have everything they’d use.
No 3 disc option for Brandon Walker?
While we’re on the subject of DVDs, I finally got the Tag Team Set review finished and published.
http://wrestling.insidepulse.com/2009/07/30/the-way-too-long-review-of-allied-powers-the-worlds-greatest-tag-teams/
Look for my epic breakdown over the WWE censoring the word “ass”, forcing me to say what everyone else is already thinking: Vince McMahon has become a pussy. P-U-S-S-Y: PUSSY!
WWE really missed the boat on the tag team DVDs. They should have had a separate set for just NWA/WCW. All the Tully/Arn stuff. All the Midnight Express stuff. I would have loved to see several Doom vs Steiners matches. Good thing I saved all my tapes from the 80′S.
“Wrestling’s Greatest Jobbers”
-Mulkey Brothers v. West Coast tag champs the Galaxians
-The George Steele match where the double-jointed jobber allowed his shoulder to be dislocated in a flying hammerlock
-Muraco wrestling a jobber while eating a sandwich
-Iron Mike Sharpe v. SD Jones in a battle of 1980’s WWF’s pre-eminent job guys
-Pete Doherty winning a match at the Boston Garden
-Iron Mike Sharpe (when he initially got a push) v. a jobber whose toupee falls off
-SD Jones and Curt Hennig v. Killer Khan and George Steele- an absolute annihilation- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvRgwbtL9ew
-Hulk Hogan v. Rusty Brooks (Brooks win via countout)
-Perry Saturn v. Mike Bell
-Jake Milliman winning the “turkey-on-a-pole” portion of the Team Challenge Series
-Frankie Williams on Piper’s Pit
I would buy that. Also, you’d have to include some matches of Rocky King getting squashed by any of the Horsemen, some George South, Italian Stallion matches and a few squashes where the Road Warriors just storm the ring and beat the piss out of Jobber A and B. Oh and the Wee Willy vs. Midnight Express squash.
The interview that David Crockett does with The Galaxians after they lose to the Mulkeys is hilarious. “Whaddya want me to say? Ya got beat!”
Jericho, IYH, Clash and Steamboat were my “must-buys.” Write in was a 3 disc set for Owen Hart. I know there is no chance, but I really want one and thought a vote for it couldn’t hurt.
Although I voted stronger for others, I was thinking what a Best of IYH could be. These are all matches which I believe have not been released on other sets, which they seem to be trying to do a lot these days.
IYH III: Bret Hart vs. Jean-Pierre Lafitte
Beware of Dog: HHH vs. Marc Mero
International Incident: Shawn Michaels, Ahmed Johnson & Sid vs. Owen Hart, British Bulldog & Vader
It’s Time: Flash Funk vs. Leif Cassidy
It’s Time: Bret Hart vs. Sid
Final Four: Owen Hart & British Bulldog vs. Doug Furnas & Philip Lafon
Final Four: Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin vs. Undertaker vs. Vader
Taker’s Revenge: Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin
Canadian Stampede: Mankind vs. HHH
Canadian Stampede: Taka Michinoku vs. Great Sasuke
Canadian Stampede: Undertaker vs. Vader
Ground Zero: Bret Hart vs. Patriot
Breakdown: Mankind vs. Rock vs. Ken Shamrock
Sure most of the matches might be missing historic value, save the Final Four title match, but for wrestling action, I’ve certainly seen worse.
Is the Ground Zero match between Michaels and the Undertaker on a DVD set?
Yeah, I believe it was on the Undertaker set a few years ago.
Right, it and the HITC rematch are on Tombstone.
Also check out the original DX DVD for how the feud started. Honestly, the Michaels/Taker feud deserves a DVD all by itself, given the matches they’ve had over the years.
Tito Santana for me, just because Scott’s reviews make it sound like he was pretty much a guy who never had bad matches. I’d definitely pick up a Steamboat or Ted Dibiase set though.
I wrote in requesting anthology series for the NWA/WCW PPVs (i.e. Halloween Havoc Anthology, Starrcade Anthology, etc…) It’d be great to finally get all of those together.
My write in was a “never gonna happen” but I want a Best of Bruiser Brody dvd, mostly for the abdullah the butcher matches and seeing Luger nearly lose his sh*t when brody stops cooperating with him.
I’m actually the one who emailed Scott on this.
Of what they offered to me Jericho is a no-brainer as he could easily go 4 discs: early years (smokey mountain and ecw), WCW, 1st WWE run, and 2nd (current) WWE run with plenty of good stuff to fill each disc.
I have to say I loved the tag team dvd. Seriously Scott perhaps the best dvd ever released (okay i know the flair and hbk dvds have more 5 star matches but those matcehs are also more common, there was a lot of good rarities on this one while still having strong match quality. So a sequel would be great.
Anyway Some stuff i’d like to see
1 – Best of the Midnight Express – perhaps the best in-ring tag team of all time, although in Vince-think I wonder if it’s economically viable
2 – Best of the Fabulous Freebirds – one of the most influential teams of all times, the documentary could be great (and with Hayes and Gordy’s son working for the company and Kevin Von Erich and Watts inducted into the HOF this year it seems most of the key players are available.) Plus the only World Class I’ve ever seen is on the WWE DVDS so it’d be full of fresh matches
3 – Best of the US Title – Of the title belts that don’t have a set I would think this would be the best one to make a set out of. I mean even in 2000 when the WCW World title was changing every hands like one a week, the US title was relatively stable with Steiner having a six month reign. Anyway figure disc 1 could be the NWA Years (Magnum, Tully, Nikita, Dusty, Whindham, even Luger had plenty of good matches as US Champ), disc 2 the WCW years (say 91 on so Austin, Steamboat, Sting and in the Monday War era where you get workers like Page, Bret, Raven, Eddie, Malenko and big stars like Goldberg, Steiner, Sid etc) and then disc 3 the WWE era (more Eddie, young Cena, Edge, Finlay, Kennedy, Benjamin, Kofi) – basically plenty of good wrestlers (and thus presumanly good matches to choose from and you get to cover different eras.
Another great 3 disc idea is one on the Hart Family. They could use some of the Stampede footage they have. Then focus on early Hart Foundation tag matches (preferablly with the Bulldogs), but since most of this stuff gets overlooked by Bret’s singles career. Then just cause it should be on dvd they could put Bret’s first title win and the Bret-Owen vs Steiners match on it. This could then transition to some Owen singles matches (since he’s not likely to get a disc of his own). Then you include some 1997 Hart Foundation stuff and then show one match with current Hart Dynasty kids getting their hands raised to end the set. This seems to be win-win-win as not only would it include all sorts of good rare stuff, it should sell based on Bret’s name, it let’s them honor Owen while avoiding a full set that may or may not offend his widow and it puts over a current team by showing just what the words Hart Dynasty really means.
I am also suprised Funk has not had a 3 disc set yet. Also as suggested above a best of MSG set could rule it.
I also wouldn’t mind them adding little one disc quick shots with no documentary for like 9.99 for the Target type retailers. Say famous feuds (Hulk-Andre, Austin-Rock, HBK-HHH, Hulk-Piper, etc) or maybe small aspects of the bigger stars that would sell on their name but not be part of their usual retrospectives. The one that most comes to mind that I would buy is a Best of the Rock N Sock Connection. They only teamed from Aug-Dec 99 and with one month comeback in 2004. You could probably fit all the matches, promos and backstage skits on one disc – and it would be tremendously entertaining. Other ideas in this vein could be the Brothers of Destruction, the Megapowers, Austin’s WCW Years, etc. They could also use single disc sets to maybe market a Hall of Fame series for guys like Tito that will never get a 3 disc set. Just show their induction speech and like 8 matches.
You know, that $9.99 idea is actually quite good. I think it would be an awesome way to throw like two hours of matches onto a DVD and sell it cheap. Fans like us would love it.
I said the same thing in the last DVD post but oh no, everyone ignores that. [/giles]
