(Thanks to Read/Rant for the cover image which I’ve stolen so brazenly)
Loved it. Yeah, Marvel’s already doing the “dark” thing really well with Dark Avengers (which I also love) but I’ve long been a DC fanboy and it was really neat to see continuity geek Geoff Johns throwing out all these callbacks to the dead heroes and going all Marvel Zombies on us. And unlike Final Crisis, it’s actually got an interesting concept that can be summed up in one sentence and doesn’t need a year of backstory to understand what the fuck is going on. Although I hadn’t heard of Aquaman’s death but I’m assuming he’ll be back sooner or later.
But c’mon, evil dead versions of Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Elongated Man and another former JL member (I’ll avoid spoilers) taking on the Flash and Green Lantern and the Corps? That’s pretty awesome.
Thumbs up.

“I smell a mystery.”
That’s all I’ll say…disturbingly funny moment.
I have to say that everything Johns has done with Green Lantern has been amazing. I had never been a huge fan of Lantern but his work on this has been great and I’ve been a fan since Sinestro Corps.
I love these self-contained stories more so than the huge events like any of the Crises’ or Civil War and Secret Invasion because you don’t need to pick up all these minor tie-ins to get the full story. That’s why the GL stuff the last few years as well as any of the cosmic stuff that Abnett and Lanning are doing over at Marvel are just amazing.
Has anyone been reading War of Kings besides me? It’s like the third part of the Annihilation chronicles and I just really enjoy these cosmic marvel characters that haven’t really been mainstream in some time.
War of Kings is good, but not as good as I thought it was going to be… The artwork is underwhelming, and just not enough EPIC moments like in the first Annihilation saga(Drax pulling out Thanos’ heart, Nova gutting Annihilus, the “Galactus bomb” reveal, Ronan using Kree homes as missiles, ect.) … All very metal moments all made of awesome… You’d think they’d be able to pull off the same in a Shiar vs Inhumans story, but it just hasn’t happened.
Rocket Raccoon pwning Gladiator with a mop was EPIC!
Yes, I’m a DC zombie too and I swear, everything Johns touches these days turns to gold, so my expectations for this were high.
Best launch issue since Infinite Crisis IMHO. What’s freaky is knowing ALL dead or deceased characters are on the table. The JLA HQ is in big trouble when the Black Rings reach the Hall of Dead Villians promise you that.
How awesome was the moment where Hal showed Barry all the heroes who had died since he’d been gone? Wasn’t until that moment I remembered everyone we’d lost over the years. Powerful.
I’m interested to see how dead-but-came-back characters will be affected: Supes, Jason Todd, Connor, Bart, Barry and especially Hal.
Also waiting for the inevitable apperance by the Spectre.
(One of) my favorite moment(s) was the crypt underneath the JLA HQ. Even referencing a recent (and kinda off-to-the-side) Nightwing story in the process as the reason for its existance. Loved seeing all those random names.
Also great – the 2 page spread of dead GLs (full of dozens of long lost folks), and Guy’s very appropriate (for him and us) reaction.
Any event helmed by Geoff Johns is going to be good.
“Even referencing a recent (and kinda off-to-the-side) Nightwing story in the process as the reason for its existance.”
I can believe I didn’t see that coming. It was established in a Nightwing arc written by Peter Tomasi, who’s also kicking ass with his work on…
… wait for it…
… Green Lantern Corps.
DC’s best writer writing as story that he’s been building towards for almost five years? I’m there.
Scott, you should really check out his run (I’ll message you on facebook about it) on the Flash. It’s a great run that really builds as it goes along.
It does go right up there with the opening of Sinestro War. I still give the nod to that though.
I’m looking forward to reading 19 paragraphs from Jesse Baker about how this is the worst thing that has ever happened and that Geoff is raping the entire industry with his ultra-nazi right-wing views.
I feel bad for DC on the day that Geoff goes “well i’m done with Green Lantern” and leaves the series. Teen Titans went to hell, Flash went to hell, Hawkman, Booster Gold, and the suckfest that was Countdown. I know i dropped JSA the second i heard he was leaving. And even though he is still attached to Superman, but not writing it, i dropped Action Comics.
Blackest Night 1 is one of my favorite single issues of anything. I had my doubts about how the DC zombies would play out, but wow, this issue blew me away. I wasn’t sure if they would be mindless shells terrorizing the DCU or knockoffs used to piss off the heroes. Instead it seemed like evil versions of the real deal with a cool zombie looking twist. I am really looking forward to issue two to see what Geoff and Ivan have in store for everyone and i mention Ivan because the art was beautiful. He was drawing anything Green Lantern down to a science. I also loved his Hawkgirl, greatly done.
