Best of Feuds

Hey Scott, longtime reader. I've been hitting up YouTube lately and I've noticed that one thing that WWE never does anymore that I think would help a lot of characters is those DVD that highlight a current character in WWE. These days, the only people who get those types of DVDs are people like Undertaker or HHH who have been in the company for a while. I think if WWE did those type of DVDs again it would really help get some of the new guys over, and another thing that could work is a best of compilation for some of the current hot feuds. What do you think?

I think that the “Best of the WWF” Coliseum video concept is a huge gaping hole in the wrestling world today and is a concept that needs to come back.  Since they pretty much have the capability to tape everything now anyway, why not film random house shows and put them on WWE.com?  Or (and they can have this idea for free), put a list of current stuff on WWE.com and allow you to compile your own DVD for like $10, which would give you two hours of footage direct from the source.  I would absolutely pay that to grab some of the best Smackdown matches from the past few months in full DVD quality instead of having to download lower quality rips from the newsgroups.

It drives me insane that they have the biggest wrestling library in history and they just can’t figure out how to make even more millions off the wrestling geeks like myself and my readers.

Hey, I really resent that, and am quite offended.

I am *not* one of your readers.

    :P

Pay-per-match is an awesome idea, Scott. They could call it iSlams.

You (and I) could finally create our definitive R’n'R/MX compilations, plus the best matches from their other side feuds (Horsemen, Fantastics).

You’d probably pass on this now, but I’d also jump at the chance to go back to 2002 and create a “Best of Smackdown Six” set. Not even in the NWA’s glory days did they have a group like that–two faces, two heels, two tweeners, and all quality workers–that they could match up as they pleased.

The WWE needs to revise their DVD schedule and refine it.

They should put out one single disc ‘forgotten’ wrestler set a month. Guys like Tito Santana, Owen Hart, etc.

Every other month, they should put out a two to three disc set focused on a single wrestler/single tag team/single stable.

On the off months for the previous sets, they should have two to three disc sets with themed focuses, like the Ultimate Cage Match collection, the Ultimate Brawls, etc.

I would also like to point out that the WWE never does anything extra with regular PPV releases anymore. At one point, they were top sellers. Even in 2003, when the business was on a downswing, the PPV DVDs were always among the top ten, but not anymore.

So let’s say, for example, when the WWE had the Elimination Chamber matches at No Way Out, why not throw in other weird multi-person matches on a second disc? They don’t have to be good matches. Just include… say… the amazing Six-Pack Challenge from Unforgiven 1999. Or maybe the Final Four match from… um… Final Four.

    Yeah, take my money Vince – I’m not spending enough! I haven’t bought a DVD since….Backlash 2009!

I was thinking about this over the weekend as I was watching one of those quickie Coliseum videos for Hulk Hogan on 24/7.

I do think they’re missing the boat by not doing at the very least Best of the Year DVDs, focusing on the TV matches. You have 4-5 million people watching every week…you’d think people would buy a DVD of the best at the end of the year, like I buy the Always Sunny in Philadelphia DVDs for each season. It would also help build the TV shows as a place where noteworthy stuff happens, since it’s on DVD for posterity. That’s how some SNME and Superstars segments became legendary, the WWE just kept putting them on Coliseum tapes.

The same is true of TNA. They put out a Best of 2007 that was pretty good, but they didn’t follow up with a 2008 or 2009 edition.

My only thought is that neither company wants to release a “best of”, because it would expose their writing as having no continuity.

I don’t know why they aren’t partnering with iTunes for something like this. I guess because they wouldn’t get all the profits, but they would sell a ton more with access to everyone with an iPod or iPhone to watch the matches on. I for one don’t access the classics website, but would probably buy tons of stuff off iTunes if I could.

    Sent from my iPhone.

I have a DVD idea which would draw money.

Have a DVD called something like “1992: A Year in Review” for example.

DVD talks about that year alone and some of the top matches for that year.

I wouldn’t mind a return to the kind of DVD’s they had with the Best of RAW. Something like that, only do something like Best of ‘08, ‘09, etc. Each one could be one of their 3-disc monstrosities with all sorts of matches and such from the shows, TV, etc.

Then again, people might start to realize that they’ve been doing different combinations of Orton, HHH and Cena over the last few years as their major feuds. :p

Letting fans compile their own DVDs is a great idea Scott. I also think WWE should look into releasing Japanese, Mexican, and other foreign footage … but with multiple commentary tracks (at least one in English). They sort of did this on the Benoit DVDs for his SuperJ matches, and it was a hoot. As someone who doesn’t speak Spanish or Japanese, watching matches in foreign commentary can be frustrating, even when you can tell the match is awesome.

Also a good women of wrestling DVD could be sweet. With classic Moolah and Martel, and fights between Jumping Bomb Angels and the Glamour Girls, Bull Nakano/Alundra Blayze, Trish/Stephanie, etc. Plus whatever crazy Japanese, ECW, WOW, or other shit in their library.

Also, a 2-DVD set: Best of Wargames/Elimination Chamber, one disc for each match, with the best 4-5 of each included.
