Nostalgia snacks

Oh AV Club, what better way to generate Generation nostalgia than to talk about favorite junk food that’s no longer available?  Some of this is completely foreign to me because it never hit Canada, but MUG-O-LUNCH?  New York Seltzer?  I used to LOVE that shit in the 80s.  I also mourn the losses of Coke C2 and Purplesaurus Rex Kool-Aid, but those ones didn’t make the list, sadly.

Damn, beat me (and anyone else who’s been following Scott since ‘99 WCW) to it!!!

Scott, do you ever miss a product so bad that the sheer ridicule of it is entertainment enough?

    No Bonkers?

    Awful.

I miss Josta….. I used to get wired on those good tasting sodas during junior high. They actually banned it from our school

We had a soda called Jolt, around here for a while. It might still be on the shelves somewhere, but I haven’t seen it in a coons age. It supposedly had 2x the caff. of regular sodas, iirc. PB Maxx always gets brought up when my friends and I wax nostalgic about candy.

When you get down to brass tax.. nothing beats reeses peanut butter cups. Nostalgic or not.

Jolt is still around, but its marketed just as another energy drink now. Back in the day before energy drinks and red bull were all the rage I remember buying it with friends in middle school – it definitely had quite a bit of caffenine in it. I lived off the Mountain Dew flavored Jolt for all-nighters freshman year of college. Drinking a few of those things would make you crazier than a run over dog (since we are quoting JR – “coons age”).

I was actually quoting my Grandpa, but the sentiment is still there and I appreciate it. It’s nice to see Jolt is still around, I figured it had to be somewhere. A soda with 2x the caff almost sells itself.

I always thought it was brass tacks. Now I don’t know what to think.

Did anyone ever BBS in the pre-internet days? I ran one for a little while and had some sweet ass ansi art endorsing Jolt Cola as the choice of sysops everywhere.

I’m pretty sure it’s still around.

E, You are most likely correct about tax/tacks thing. Either way…

I miss candy cigarettes and gum that they shaped into a cigar. Oh! and the INDIVIDUAL pieces of bazooka joe gum. I can’t find those anywhere. We used to be able to take a handful of dimes and nickels to the local c-store and come out with a bag filled with: bazooka joe, jollyranchers, lemonheads, cherryheads, boston baked beans, airheads, peanut butter cups, and pez. Now you can’t get squat for under 1.25 if you’re lucky.

Sorry, I guess I went off on a tangent.. in any case I DO miss candy cigarettes and cigar gum. I understand why they took it off the shelf, but that doesn’t take the hurt away.

We recently bought some individual pieces of Bazooka Joe. I regret to inform you that they seem to have changed the formula, no doubt replacing sugar with high fructose corn syrup or something similar.

The Bazooka gum of my era was good. This gum was slimy and stuck to the roof of my mouth. It was every bit as cheap and generic tasting as Dubble Bubble.

The best gum is Ford brand gum that comes in vending machines. You know the kind I’m talking about. The assorted colors and flavors (Licorice, spearmint, peppermint, fruit, cinnamon, and pepsin).

I’ve tried to order it in bulk online but can’t seem to find the correct brand.

    Scott you rat bastard asshole.

This article contained Ice Cream Cone cereal. I still *dream* about that cereal. It was the best ever. I had finally recovered and given up all hope, and then you go and post this. Now I’m jonesing for it again and going back to work on my time machine.

You’ll pay Scott Keith. Oh yes, you’ll pay.

Going way back into my childhood now, but no love for Hi-C Ecto Cooler?

Anybody remember Kona Pepsi. Coffee flavored soda. I thought that was the greatest shit ever invented. The commericals even had Tom Jones which was cool. Sadly it didn’t catch on:(

  8. awel_cruiz says:

Anyone here remember Pizza Hut Pizza Cravers Doritos? I love those little bastards. They made ‘em for about six months then stopped. That’s my life in a nutshell. They find out I like something so they stop making it.

    • catfishhedberg says:

Those were the best doritos ever. Although Keebler’s Pepperoni Pizzeria chips were the greatest chip in the history of the world, in my humble opinion.
