Mailbag first!
Hi Scott,
I was reading through your review of the World Class dvd (the WWE produced one) and you mentioned a match idea that Dory Funk had called a “German First Blood Match”. It’s like a normal first blood match but instead of trying to bust the person open first, you try to fill up a towel with your opponent’s blood and the first person to do so wins. Obviously this isn’t something that the WWE would use nowadays b/c of the whole PG thing but I thought that was a really cool idea and would be a great feud ender. What other neat concept matches have you heard wrestlers/journalists propose over the years or have thought up yourself that haven’t been tried yet? Feel free to post this on the blog for discussion.
I think we’ve mostly milked the cow dry as far as gimmick matches go. TNA has certainly perfected the art of overcomplicating things with reverse battle royales and cage matches with ladders inside and such. Anyway, I’ve always like the simple idea of the penalty box match from World Class, where you do a six-man tag match but the ref catches you cheating, you get locked in a small cage for a minute, thus giving the other team a 3-on-2 advantage. It’s basic risk-reward psychology and makes small things seems much more meaningful.

Ultimate Fighting Championship III - The American Dream!
- So we're back to an 8-man tournament again after the failed experiment that was the 16-man tournament of UFC 2. One minor rule change, as Big John now has the power to stop matches.

Not sure if you have seen this Scott but WWE is running a survey on what people would like to see in future DVD releases. Choices include Jericho and Steamboat (my two favorites of the dozen or so they listed) to some of your favorite concepts like War Games and Clash of Champions to the trendy (a Best of Brock Lesnar) to the downright bizarre (like a best of John Morrison – really?). At the end they also have a blank submission form where you can suggest stuff not on the list. I propose we martial your readership’s forces to get either a Midnight Express or Fabulous Freebirds dvd out there.
Anyways here’s the link:
http://www.wweresearch.com/se.ashx?s=0B880140725437F7
and actually this brings up a question since your readership does love lists of what would your top 10 dvd wish list be (given the actual footage in the WWE library)
Yup, saw it and voted for Best of Wargames, Best of Ricky Steamboat and Best of Clash as my “Definitely would buy choices.” Write-in was Best of Midnight Express.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship II: No Way Out! (March 11 1994)
- This was back when SEG favored roman numerals in their titles.
- Changes in the format: 16 men in the tournament (Royce Gracie v. 15 tomato cans, basically), no rounds this time.
- The original announce crew is gone and replaced with Brian Kilmeade and stuntman Ben Perry, along with dead weight Jim Brown.

The SmarK DVD Rant for Fast & Furious
Man, Van Diesel. After the first The Fast & The Furious movie, everyone thought he was poised to be a megastar, and then he kind of pissed it away with bizarre casting choices and turning down the sequel. Not that it made Paul Walker into any kind of international movie idol either, but he's not hurting for work at least.
Now admittedly I'm not a gearhead or a huge fan of the franchise in general, but I did enjoy the first two movies. And, well, I saw the third movie, and we'll leave it at that. Maybe you had to really like drift racing to get all the layers, I dunno. Really though, the title sounds like a generic 80s buddy movie -- "Paul Walker is Detective Arnold Fast, and Vin Diesel is Agent Sal Furious! Together they're FAST AND FURIOUS!" Actually I'd totally watch that movie.

Quick Night of Champions predictions before we get started with this week's fun. I'm halfway done with the AWA rant. Those matches are not always easy on the eyes.
