It's because 1. he was being pushed against criminally underutilized internet darlings Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, and to a lesser extent Christian. And 2. because he was being pushed a such a vanilla character. When he was trash talking white rapper Cena he was edgy and the internet was in love with him. I've said it before and I'll say it again, editing the FU on Benoit out of Smackdown in 2005 was one of the worst decisions WWE ever made. That having been said, Cena is one of the only true "superstars" in the company and has made Vince (and himself) plenty of money and will continue to for many many years...so what do I know?
