That's the one. Punk suddenly winning the world title out of nowhere pretty much sums up how ballsy and fresh the show felt. It was like they were going to try doing something new for a change.

...then it became a McMahon show again.

One of my favorite parts of the Kid/Ramon match are the wild, chaotic jump shots right after Kid pins him; like even the production crew was so surprised they didn't know what to do.
Today's slickly produced RAW has it's value, but you don't really get those kind of spontaneous seeming moments anymore.

There are only 3 reasons why it was worthwhile keeping Billy Gunn that long:

1) Billy's prayer to God (Rock promo)
2) Rock humiliating him at Summerslam 1999 in the kiss my ass match
3) After Edge won KOTR 2001, he promised everyone that he would not "Billy Gunn" the KOTR title beause he planned on being entertaining

I think you're talking about the period last summer just after the draft, when HHH went to Smackdown, there was no GM/authority figure, and the announcers weren't trying to force everything down your throat. They even tried CM Punk as the title holder for the first time.

Best month or so that show had done for quite some time. Even my wife didn't mind seeing it so much.

"This is gonna be a bigger trainwreck than Jon and Kate Plus Eight, I'm betting."
Channeling JR with that Pop-Culture reference?

Yeah, that was one of the more common goof-ups in the early internet era - everyone thought THIS was the Shawn / Marty match that won match of the year in PWI, when it's not.

Oh, and the Gunns' first finish was the backdrop into the piledriver, which I *think* was supposed to be called the Revolver but only Johnny Polo ever referred to it as such. They then went to the first Sidewinder (Bart holds up the opponent in a backbreaker, Billy just sort of jumps on him) and the second Sidewinder (the sideslam / legdrop combo), which stuck largely because it was the hardest to screw up.

Barbarian / Meng used to use the powerbomb variant a fair bit, and it looked great.

I get confused because Marty and HBK had a lot of matches round this time, but was it this match that Meltzer gave ***** to?

Gunns had a crappy gimmick, but I thought they worked really well together in the ring. Billy Gunn stopped caring about the workrate around the time the Gunns split up too.
