Wuss Rock?

Hey Scott--

Really random question for you: What is the name of the song that played when Vince ran down the card of the first WrestleMania, before he got tired of paying royalties and replaced it with generic Wuss Rock? No wait, Crap Rock?

I think it’s more wussy than crappy.

Anyone know the answer, regardless?

No idea of the answer but I second the wuss-rock rather than crap-rock opinion.

That applies to entrance music and the Raw opening.

I vote crap rock because the first thing I think, like when they have the PPV theme songs, is, wow thats crappy. wuss rock makes me think of ballads and cheesy stuff.

The Raw opening is the best example…such a crappy, crappy song. And its been the theme for a long time, hasnt it?

      • Knighthawk says:

The RAW theme could count as wuss rock. It’s an emo-ish song where the guy complains, no, whines about nobody loving him.

Pretty wussy if you ask me. The guys at 411mania were right when they did that article about theme music, it should *not* be the theme for a wrestling show.

I just count the really whiny stuff about not being understood or wanting to be loved or accepted or as wuss rock.

Bands used to get drunk and wreck shit. They’re still getting drunk but now they get drunk and cry about not fitting in in high school or being on the edge or wondering when and if and how their wounds could ever heal or some other wussy crap. The vast majority of songs the WWE uses now sounds like they were written by committee and performed by the latter.

It was “Easy Lover” by Phil Collins & Philip Bailey from what i remember, Wikipedia seems to agree with me.

Makes sense, as “Take Me Home” was used to close off Saturday Nights Main Event.

It was “Easy Lover” by Phil Collins without the lyrics, I believe.

I have a question, was the original music like Eye of the Tiger on the Coliseum Video releases? Or was it always dubbed out? Or did they do the ECW thing where they didn’t pay for anything until people started to notice?

      • Chad Bryant says:

Titan Sports began using more self-produced music almost as soon as wrestling became popular.

And ECW generally took care of its ASCAP/BMI fees for television, and their use of “real music” only became an issue once the company started marketing PPV events and home video on a wide scale.

Eye of the Tiger was on the original VHS release, as well as subsequent releases. When they released the DVD anthology, they dubbed in “Real American”.

JYD also used to enter to “Another One Bites the Dust”, but that was dubbed over with “Grab Them Cakes”, presumably because Vince wants us all to shove sharp objects in our ears.

        No.

On CV, the opening was overdubbed with generic music, and Vince did a new voiceover to boot.

Junkyard Dog and the U.S. Express’s entrances were cut out entirely.

Wendi Richter and Hulk Hogan’s songs were overdubbed with the same piece of generic music.

I can vouch for this…now talk about wussy ’80s pop!

Many of the ’80s Turner releases of NWA shows had the same problem (Starrcade ‘87 had all kinds of nondescript songs dubbed over everything, for instance…even guys with no theme music!)

People who know me know I can go on ALL DAY about the music clearance problem…

I remember on the “Hulkamania” video from ‘85, the sound is just turned way down when the music hits and Monsoon does voiceovers. I always wondered why this was as a kid and it only occurred to me in the last several years. Very annoying even then.

In one of his reviews, Scott said they now overdub Jive Soul Bro whenver Slick or Akeem are on a dvd. A little bit of me died when I heard that.

    • jevan says:

They seem to have gotten over that. JSB is back on the Summer Slam anthology.

      • jmfabianorpl says:

Yes, after WM Anthology’s release, they seem to have regained the rights to the Piledriver album, I guess…as JSB and Demolition are now heard again. (Yet they always had the rights to “Honky Tonk Man”…go figure)
