For some reason I was thinking about the show this morning, and it occurred to me:
1) We don't know who Alex's dad actually is, right? We just know Ben basically kidnapped her from Rousseau after the purge and adopted her as his own daughter.
2) Charles Widmore really, REALLY hates Ben.
3) Widmore was on the island as a younger man.
So what if Widmore is Alex's real father? Ben stealing his daughter away would certainly explain the hatred between them. And it would also explain why Ben was so sure that Widmore's goons weren't going to murder Alex in cold blood.

In “Solitary” Rosseau says she was 6 months pregnant when she arrived and her team had Robert on it, who was her lover, who she shot to death cause he was “sick” maybe going time-crazy.
Following the “everything is connected” theory, rumors abound have Miles possibly related to the Dharma dude.
Yea, lots of people are thinking that Miles is the baby from the opening scene of the season.
I was more under the impression that Ben has seen many of the events unfold on the island already through time-loops, which is why he can be so confident on the island of when things are going to happen. As such, he was stunned to see Alex get shot since Widmore has been able to figure out how to ‘change the rules’ and alter a situation? Or Widmore somehow was able to defy the island’s ability to ‘prevent people from dying that haven’t finished their quest’ and Alex had ‘more to do’ – thus Ben wasn’t worried about her dying. That would also ‘Change the rules.’
And concerning the 4 toed statue – I was reading darkufo blog the other day, and in vozzek69’s post he mentioned something kind of cute.
“Latin? If we ever needed an indication as to how long the Others have been around, the fact they’re speaking such a dead language is a good indication they’ve existed since the 4-toed statue. At this point I’d like to give a shoutout to Hastenfist, who in the comments last week pointed out the quick, innocent scene where Sawyer stepped on something in the jungle. Some infection, a toe amputation, and a couple of time-skips later, Hastenfist theorized that maybe the statue itself would turn out to be a monument of Sawyer, built in tribute to him for something he does wayyyy in the past. Awesome idea, and I love it!”
The dart or whatever was right by his big toe and the statue had a big toe but I like the idea of a sawyer statue. Perhaps they could engrave it with his favorite saying “Son of a bitch!”
It could be like when Ash goes back in time to Medieval England in the third Evil Dead movie Army of Darkness and teaches the medieval peasants the power of his shotgun or “boom stick”.
