Lost some more

So with a weekend off after a hectic work week and no desire to waste three hours on reviewing Survivor Series, I decided to make better use of my time by watching the entire second season of Lost.  And wow, was this just as good as the first or what?  Someone in the last thread about the show commented that the end of the second season and start of the third were a bit of a slog to get through, but in the immortal words of Mean Gene, WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING, MAN?  Perhaps the absence of commercial breaks and weeks off helped the flow a lot for me, but I was on the edge of my seat for like 18 hours straight, something that hasn't happened to me since the first season of 24.

Spoilery stuff when we continue...

Unfortunately the ultimate alignment of "Henry Gale" was pretty much known to me in advance because I had heard about his Emmy nom and how he was the best villain on TV, but I think it's a testament to his acting and the writing that I was actually feeling sympathetic for him and buying that he could be who he initially claimed he was.

And what was up with introducing and then killing off Anna Lucia and Libby?  Anna is no big loss because the character was such a bitch and got shoehorned into a Mary Sue type role on the show right away, something which made me dread her few feature episodes.  Like, she's not even that hot and she killed the one girl on the show who really IS really hot.  So die, beyotch.  But with Libby, they had this awesome tease where you see her in the loony bin with Hurley that looked like it was gonna set up some big story arc for them, and then boom, she's dead and gone, outside of one cameo in the Desmond story.

Desmond is probably my second favorite character after Locke or Eko (Adewale playing a priest who assassinates people?  FUCK YEAH), because every show needs a crazy Scottish bastard to represent, ya know?  So many great little character moments with him in the short time he had this season thus far, and I'm saddened that Clancy Brown got killed off in the season finale because I would have loved to have him around, too.

I do have to say that there are good flashbacks (Locke does anything, Hurley in the crazy house) and bad (KATE does ANYTHING), and I think I've had about enough of Charlie's backstory in general.  Yes, he loves heroin, he's British, he had one hit, we get it already.  I'm thankful there was no Claire story this year because she and her baby and her accent are useless and tiresome.

And I have to say, I was on Team Locke as far as what failing to push the button would yield (ie, nothing, it's all a big mindfuck, etc) so it was nice to be proven wrong.  Plus the hatch had become too much of a crutch by the end of the season anyway, with people on a desert island taking showers and doing laundry and stuff.

Now I'm prepped for my next weekend off so I can catch up on season 3 and hopefully be ready by January with the rest of the world!

Yes but why does it only have 3 toes

Uh… sounds like you think you only have one season to catch up on before the premiere. Nope. Season Five starts in January, so you gotta get through seasons three AND four first.

You can do it, both seasons are fantastic.

Without giving anything away, the end to season 3 is extremely powerful and the best thing for those that didn’t quit on the show; all this character buildup and exposition pays off big time as you are invested into the players involved.

Scott, hurry up and finish seasons 3 & 4 so we can talk less cryptic :-)

Lost is one of the worst television shows I’ve ever seen. Besides the idiotic serious Gilligan’s Island premise it made a complete waste of half of the main cast of Oz. The flashbacks are stupid, the show is poorly acted, the characters are uninteresting, and the jungle looks fake. I’ve had countless friends try to sell me on it, sorry, there are a million better things on TV. In a TV landscape with True Blood and Mad Men there is no time for it.

You would’ve been better off with Survivor Series and that’s saying something because it’s a lousy show and Cena vs. Jericho was hugely disappointing given their track record of chemistry.

        …and the jungle looks fake…

LOL, that is funny dude. Fine, you absolutely hate the show more than liver and onions, whatever. But, to say the jungle looks fake when it’s shot ON LOCATION IN HAWAII is kinda stupid.

I’ll give you Mad Men but I think that LOST is the best show on the big four.

Aren’t you the guy at the other blog who has said how you either never watched Lost or only watched part of the 1st season? Doesn’t really qualify you to comment on a show that has had 4 seasons if you’ve seen 5 eps total, if that.

The actors who played Anna Lucia and Libby both got DUI’s while filming season 2 in Hawaii. A lot of people saw their killing offs as messages to the other actors not to screw around because continuity is really important to a show like this.

Glad to see you’ve gotten in to Lost though Scott. It’s my favorite show on TV and i think season 2 is probably it’s weakest, so you have a lot to look forward to.

Scott, Libby was killed in order to generate sympathy, because Anna Lucia wasn’t considered enough of a sympathetic character (which is true, though it was still kinda harsh).

Plus, I think she had a pilot get picked up on another network.

    • thatnickguy says:

Actually, the actress for Anna was killed off because she got in trouble with the authorities (drunk driving or something). I THINK the same situation occurred with the Libby actress at the same time, possibly in the same car as the other chick, but I can’t remember or care.

      • awel_cruiz says:

Not true. Although both actresses were in involved in alcohol related incidents, Anna Lucia was always meant to be killed off. It was decided that Libby would die at the same time in order to generate sympathy since Anna was an unlikable bitch.

        • starvenger says:

Always meant to be killed, so they say. Sorry, but the timing of the DUIs and the future endeavoring is too close to be a coincidence. I believe that about as much as I believe George Lucas’ revisionist history about Star Wars. If they wanted to REALLY generate sympathy they’d have killed Hurley instead of doing stupid stuff like fake killing Charlie and killing redshirts like Arzt.

Anyways, I got off the Lost wagon midway through season three when it was pretty much at it’s low point. No regrets even though I know they’ve bounced back since then – I needed to cut down on TV anyway.

Scott, have fun with that season when you see the “comedy” that is Take a Shit Guy…

Forget Lost…what were your thoughts on the Simpsons this week? I thought it was the funniest episode in the longest time as Homer’s interaction with Bashir’s mom was priceless. And the Aladdin Genie dream sequence was dated but awesome.

    “Praise to Oliver!”
