OK, I know I probably have to turn in my heterosexual membership card for saying this, but Twilight was kinda pretty good. Yeah, I didn't LOOOOOOOOVE it as much as Jodi did or the army of 14-year old girls in the audience did, but it far exceeded my low expectations and actually had a lot of redeeming value. They took their time with the story and didn't pack a whole "vampires v. werewolves" battle arc into the first movie like they were teasing, and it was basically a teenage love story instead of a boring fanwank like Underworld or Underworld: The Even More Incredibly Fucking Boring Sequel. Plus the teenagers were written to act and talk like TEENAGERS instead of adults, which I liked. People were awkward and gawky and said the wrong stuff at the wrong time, just like actual people do. As long as you take the bad dialogue and budget special effects on the deliberately cheesy level that the movie seems to support, getting dragged to it isn't the worst thing in the world. Thumbs up!

I know I’ll probably be shot for this (interwebs shot, natch), but are we privvy to a Survivor Series rant? Or are the PPV rants over now the book is out?
I work in retail and it’s Christmas season. Do the math.
I got your money already + I don’t like wrestling = No ppv rants
Y’know, if I have to ever move to a new school, I hope a group of fun-loving kids instantly want to be my friends.
Scott, you should try to get your hands on (i.e. download) “Let The Right Ones In”. If you don’t mind subtitles, this Swedish movie touches on some of the same themes as “Twilight” and having seen the Swedish one and checking the tomato meter; the consensus is that it’s way better. It is pretty damn awesome.
Of course, I like my man card, so if I catch “Twilight”; it’ll have to be in the privacy of my home.
I actually saw Let the Right One In at Tribeca this year, and while I agree that it’s likely a better movie than Twilight (which I have no intentions of seeing unless I happen to come across it on HBO on a night when I’m really bored out of my mind), it left me with a kind of “meh” feeling. The acting wasn’t all that great and there are a number of moments in the film where things slow down to a glacial pace or where something happens that it’s hard to suspend disbelief.
Caught this one at a local film festival, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. They did the ‘cute and innocent’ thing pretty well considering the subject matter, and the final few minutes were hilarious (perhaps not intentionally)!
I’m spoiled by True Blood being the shit right now so going in I had rather low expectations, but the performances where quite good and I suspect whomever played the female lead is probably gonna be the next IT bitch… That being said we are in complete agreement about the utter wackness of the special effects. True Blood’s production levels are so much better comparatively with Twilight looking like a mini series on Scifi channel, and not a major theatrical release of a very popular book.
Considering that Twilight made nearly double its budget in its opening weekend in the Americas alone, I have a feeling that the special effects issue is going to be significantly resolved in the (inevitable, already announced) sequels.
