Now here's an interesting poll from WWE.com.

Kind of makes you realize that the shows peaked in the 80s and it was mostly downhill from there as far as match quality goes.

What do you mean??? How could you classify Crowbar vs. Terry Funk as anything but a classic?!?!?
Does this mean the DVD is dead?
Give the match choices, I’m suddenly not as interested in watching that DVD. But if the Guerrerro/Ohtani match is there, I’m down. I always dug the NJPW vs WCW feud.
This isn’t for the DVD. It’s for a program that’s going to air on WWE 24/7 in November.
My bad, didn’t read the paragraph, just figured it was like the WWF and IC Championship dvd surveys. And of course I can’t get 24/7, so the whole thing is a moot point. Bummer.
And yet their profit went up.
The 1983-1986 were all record breakers, and all did better business than any of the shows except 1996, 1997, and 1998. Without Starrcade’s early success, there would be no Wrestlemania.
Business went up during the peak years of Bischoff-era WCW yes, but the early shows promoted by Crockett were a huge success.
So yeah, “their profit went up” for the peak years, but interest in Starrcade dwindled quite a bit during the early years of the Turner buyout, early in Hogan’s run, and when WCW was on a downslide.
Well let’s be honest — the quality of great wrestlers was certainly there from 1989 – 1993 for them to have great Starrcade’s with. From 1989 on, it was a parade of gimmick matches though — The Iron Man in 89, the tag team tournament in 90 and Battlebowl for 91-92.
I think Superbrawl was intended to replace Starrcade as their trademark show when it debuted in 1991 (hence them picking up the roman numerals ala WrestleMania). If you think about it, a good majority of their big money matches took place at Superbrawl from 1991 through 1995 and not at Starrcade, with the exception of the 10th Anniversary show in 1993. You had Luger/Sting vs the Steiners in 1991, Luger/Sting in 1992, The big Vader/Flair rematch for 1994, Hogan/Vader for 1995 (compared to Beefbutcher/Hogan for Starrcade and the other two “main events”) and Savage/Flair & Hogan/Giant in 1996, compared to the “Japan vs USA” gimmick show from Starrcade.
It wasn’t until Starrcade 96 and the whole NWO storyline that Starrcade picked up in importance again, with the “big” Hogan/Piper match, Hogan/Sting in 1997, and Goldberg/Nash in 1998.
I don’t care what anyone says, I liked Goldberg vs. Nash. Could’ve done without the Scott Hall run-in, but an otherwise entertaining match.
Bash at the Beach took over as the big show
Oh, and 1995 Starrcade is my favorite post-80 edition of the PPV
mine as well, though I’m biased because I was there in the front row! There’s a huge closeup of a nerdy 11 yr old me during Savage’s entrance next to the crazy granny
i liked that as well. i might have to dig up my copy. Flair winning the title with a little horseman help was retro.
I used to love seeing that crazy old lady from Tenn get into yelling matches with Terry Funk… Starcade ‘95 was also great because it was the first time WCW let someone blade in over a year and it was doozy by Flair.
Minor point — Flair didn’t blade himself. Savage bladed Flair for reasons that Flair never understood (and Savage hit a gusher blading Flair, which is why it was so gruesome).
It’s all in Flair’s book.
I hate Flair’s book.
I thought it was pretty damn good. Yes, it could’ve been about two hundred pages longer, but overall it’s the best I’ve read by a wrestler. No, I’m NOT a big Mick Foley fan (talk about a blow hard) and I haven’t had the chance to read Bret’s book yet.
I thought Foley’s book and Bret Hart’s book were way better. Flair seemed a bit too proud of himself for all the partying and womanizing he did. Not enough about the matches, the stories leading to them, or other wrestlers. Too much about the parties and the lifestyle.
I didn’t get that from Flair’s book at all. Clearly, we read two different books. To each his own!
Flair is his own biggest fan anyway. He’s a kiss-ass to those around him and a backstabber to those who aren’t. Great, great wrestler, shitty person.
My sig is Flair’s blade job from Starrcade ‘95 – One of the best I’ve ever seen. Flair was legit out of it from losing so much blood. I was there in person that night in Nashville and I never thought I’d see Flair with the Big Gold belt again after watching him (in person once again) drop it to Hogan as “Bash at the Beach” in July ‘94. Given how wide spread Flair’s title losses and wins have been, I bet the number of people who have seen him win and lose a world title is under 5,000? 10,000?
I am still waiting for them to show all of the Starrcade’s from the 80s on 24/7. So far they have shown 1985. At this rate, it will be 2028 before they show the rest of the 80s shows.
Hey is the Steiner/Sid match the one where Sid’s leg went all floppy, still makes me cringe to this day
I’m not totally sure, but I think that match happened the next month at SuperBrawl Revenge in 2001. I don’t think it happened at Starrcade.
Sorry, I’m a month off, as evidenced by the next comments. I forgot SuperBrawl was in February. It was Sin I think, though, because I know Greed was WCW’s final PPV ever in March.
No, that was the next month’s Sin or Greed or whatever the hell it was ppv with the 4-way that only had 3 guys(Jarrett was the 3rd).
No way are they gonna show that on 24/7. The TV ratings board tend to frown on gruesome leg breakings.
Nobody stopped Nitro from doing 20 slo mo frame by frame replays of the leg breaking the next night.
Funny, that is actually my last memory of watching Nitro other than the RAW / Nitro simulcast.
Has ANYONE been involved in more embarassing wrestling stories than Sid? Let’s examine.
- Stabs AA with scissors
- Attacks Pillman with a squeegee
- Poops himself in a match with the Undertaker
- Forgets he is doing a live promo on a ppv and asks to start over
- Nearly kills Pillman in a War Games
- Leaves wrestling at the peak of his career to play SOFTBALL
- Has the worst bone break I’ve seen in wrestling
I know I am missing something. Feel free to add.
Yet at the same time, Sid was at the center of two great and unexpected markout moments. First, at the 1989 Great American Bash where the crowd lost their shit for Sid during the tag team match for no apparent reason. And 2nd at MSG during the 96 Survivor Series. You have to say, Sid was unique.
The crowd going nuts for Sid after the Royal Rumble Match in ‘92 was pretty cool too.
There was part in that I’ll never forget, where Sid gets on one knee and invites the crowd to cheer…which they do. And Hogan has this look on his face like someone told him his puppy was sick, just a really sad “they’re turning on me” look. For a Hogan hater, it’s beautiful.
See the other thread about XMVIII. Apparently they were going to go with Hogan-Flair, but nobody cared, so they did Hogan-Sid instead and made a killing.
Also if an alcoholic attacked me with a pair of SAFETY scissors, I’d damn sure stab him back too.
Sid has main evented two stadium shows.
Couple of questions.
1. How did that leg break match finish? I read somewhere it went on for another 5 minutes with Animal as the 4th man.
2. That’s the second time this week ive heard about Sid soiling himself against Taker, but never heard it before – any links?
Thanks guys
Apparently Sid has weak bowels and has shat himself more than once during a match.
I saw an online video interview with Taker years ago where he said he powerslammed Sid and when he got up he smelled something funky. Turned out Sid poopd on himself.
The interview was ike from 98, 99. I think it might have been on the TSN Off The Record site but can’tremember.
I’m pretty sure it was Off the Record too.
Man, I don’t remember the exact finish; but I want to say that Scott Steiner went on to pin Sid even with the shredded leg…and yes, it did go on for a few more minutes.
A) You’re forgetting the incident where he had the squirrel and someone bet him he couldn’t keep it down his pants for two minutes. He couldn’t, the squirrel bit his penis and he required stitches and a rabies shot. And what about the promo he was cutting against the Outsiders where he said they were half the man he is and he has half the brains they do?
B) I wouldn’t call leaving wrestling for softball embarrassing, if he loved to play he loved to play, it never stopped promoters from pushing him to the top. The ankle break is another thing that I wouldn’t call embarrassing, as it was more horrific. I just felt bad for him when that happened.
C) I never got the hate for Sid. True, he was no Flair or Benoit in the ring, but I always saw him in squash matches or matches with opponents who carried him to good matches (HBK jumps to mind). Keep in mind that I missed a lot of early-90’s WCW so I might be missing out on a lot of stuff. He just always seemed insanely over wherever he went. He might be an idiot, but so what?
They better show Flair-Luger from Starrcade ‘88. My copy of that match looks like crap and I want a better version of it. I’ve also forgotten much of Starrcade ‘89 (for good reason), but I’d like to see Flair-Sting from that event. Was the Steiner Bros.-Road Warriors match any good?
My favorite “Sid” moment is from the Free-For-All PPV preview show before one “In Your House” event in ‘96, where Sid messed up a LIVE interview and said “shit,” then asked J.R. if he could do it over, to which J.R. said “this is live television buddy!” Sid finished the interview, but just as they were going back to the arena, you could see Sid LOSE IT over messing up. It looked to me like he hit the wall of the dressing room with his bare fist.
That’s on the “WWF’s Funniest Moments” DVD from 2002, and it happened at the pre-show of the first IYH in May 1995.
Minor thing, but Sid did not swear at all in that interview. He just stumbled over a word, asked JR if he could re-start, and JR said it was live. Sid then gave a one sentence promo, and JR threw it over to Todd Pettengill.
i was watchin sin with some friends of mine…here’s the finish…Sid goes on the 2nd rope and attempts to hit steiner with a big boot off the rope (Johnny Ace’s Idea btw) and when he falls he snaped his leg….at that time they brought in the mystery opponent dressed in all black with a wanna be Jason hockey mask…the “mystery” man comes in the ring and kicks Sid in the head. They make the pin and the match is over…The mystery man ends up being Roadwarrior Animal. I remember the reaction of all my friends as we sat there dumbfounded…man that was lame…hope that helped out guys!
I thought for sure he said something close to ’shit’ or was going to say it. I’ll have to drag out the tape and check it.
