WON ‘91
Saturday, July 12th, 2008Gotta say, if you need motivation to pony up the money for the new F4W/Observer site, the reposts of the 1991 Observers are worth the money alone. Just looking back on some of the stuff Dave casually drops in the newest one, from May 1991, kind of blows my mind.
Take a look at a TV taping that WCW did that week, for instance, featuring the debuts of The Diamond Studd ("he looked better than Scott Hall", as Dave noted), Johnny B. Badd (who Dave notes is "muscular jobber Marc Merro, doing a gay gimmick"), Black Blood (from France, who speaks English), Mr. Hughes debuting in the gimmick that saved his career, and of course a minor debut as former USWA midcarder Steve Austin came in.
Also funny to note that in previous issues, the Black Blood gimmick had been listed as going to Kevin Nash before they switched it to Billy Jack at the last minute.
On the WWF side, Dave talks about rumors of Steve Keirn coming in as "The Gator", which wasn’t far off.
It’s also interesting to read about Joel Goodhart’s two-bit promotion in Philly, which didn’t mean a lot at the time but led to the creation of ECW a couple of years later using his regulars.
I actually enjoy the older issues a lot more because the paragraph structure is a bit more, shall we say, leisurely and not trying to cram 18 thoughts in every sentence. I mean, I love Dave’s writing when he’s on, but he’s getting really bad lately for starting a thought and then veering off within the same sentence into another point and totally losing his initial direction.
