So with the writer’s strike having decimated all my TV viewing, I’m now down to Scrubs as the sole show left on my viewing schedule with any new episodes to burn off. And the last season hasn’t exactly been a banner year for them yet. Just to recap where we are…
- Pushing Daisies wrapped up its initial run last night with another fantastic episode (the gag with the Wish-a-Wish lady torn in two had me laughing and Jodi going “ewwww” and then giggling about it, always a good sign) but they end on a major cliffhanger about Chuck’s mom being AUNT LILY that’s just not fair. Who knows if we’ll ever see it resolved or if ABC will keep the show around after the strike, but if it doesn’t return then I’d have to nominate the short season as one of the strongest in TV history. Seriously, this was a show with no weak episodes that just kept getting better with each layer they put on the characters.
- The season finale of Dexter was leaked this past week, which means that I wrapped up season two with episodes 11 and 12 on the weekend, and HOLY SHIT let me just say that the finale was everything that the arc promised and then some. Lilah would be the mega-heel of the year if she was a wrestler, but more than that I cannot give away about the fates of any of the main characters. I hear that CBS is going to air season 1 as a “let’s put anything new on TV” replacement for the striking shows, and although I don’t know how that would work editing-wise, if they did seasons 1 and 2 as a 24-episode network run people would likely be going crazy over the show on a much bigger scale than they do now. You really owe it to yourself to pick up the DVD when it comes out, because the second season was TEXTBOOK in the way it showed exactly how to avoid the sophomore jinx for a show like this one. There is really nothing else on TV that can touch Dexter for the bizarre way that it plays with conceptions of good and evil and manipulates the emotions of the viewer in unexpected ways. If there’s any justice, it’ll get an Emmy nod this year.
- Shows I watch that are done: Prison Break, Heroes, House, Pushing Daisies, The Office, possibly the Sunday animation block and I believe Earl wraps up tonight for the season. Scrubs supposedly has another 6 episodes to burn, but other than that I’ll be hitting the DVD collection on a regular basis, I suppose. More 24/7 reviews for y’all if you want to look at the bright side.
