This is apparently the oldest surviving footage of pro wrestling, from 1920:

Speaking of people on drugs…

Friday, August 31st, 2007

If, like me, you’re pretty sure that the entire roster will be suspended by the next PPV anyway, you might as well check out the Iron Sheik Hall of Fame special on 24/7, which is pretty short and lacking in a lot of ways, but has three good selling points:1)  The title match against Bob Backlund, which is surprisingly good.2)  The boot camp match against Sgt. Slaughter, which is clipped to the last few minutes, but it’s a BLOODY few minutes and probably one of the loudest pops you’ll ever hear outside of Hulk Hogan.3)  Sheik’s HOF induction speech in 2005, which is so charmingly crazed that you can’t help but love it.  The Hulk Hogan leg-breaking story is awe-inspiring in its delusion.Sadly, the show is only 40 minutes long and only actually offers the above, with everything else compressed to about 40 seconds of clips.  Where’s the crazy YouTube rants about humbling Brian Blair?  I’m sure someone had a copy they could have bought.  Anyway, check it out for the Best Speech Ever and the boot camp match, but don’t expect much else.–Are you looking for a reliable online people finder? The SmarK 24/7 Rant for WWF Global Warfare ‘93

- I don’t even remember if I’ve done this one in a Coliseum rant, but it’s on and I’ve got a couple of hours free because it’s my birthday, so let’s do it. This one fits into the rather nebulous “Destination Worldwide” theme for September.

WWE gets TOUGH with drugs

I’m sure this’ll end up being Tommy Dreamer or other equally positioned talents, but if it turns out to be any actual names who get in shit for the scandal, it’s at least a positive step.

Edit to add:

WCW Kollision in Korea

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for WCW Collision in Korea

- My god, the cool shit you get on this channel. How can I pass this one up?

- Live from Korea, the only time that ever happened and likely to stay that way. This was a neat idea from April 95, which was sadly during a really bad time for WCW and thus wasn’t really what it could have been, historically speaking. The crowd is huge, more than 300,000 people total over two nights, because the government decreed that people had to go or get shot, more or less. As a promotional tactic, I’ve seen worse.

- Your hosts are Eric Bischoff, Mike Tenay, and Sonny Onoo (called Ishikawa and just doing a generic Japanese guy thing).

- This is not actually complete, as opener Chris Benoit v. 2 Cold Scorpio is cut out for obvious reasons.

QOTSA

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Holy SHIT what a show tonight.  While (some of you) were watching RAW tonight, I was getting rocked six ways from Sunday by Queens of the Stone Age in probably one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.  This was a weird one for me, too, because I’m not even that big of a fan and I generally just listen to them in the car because Jodi has it on all the time and she’s the huge fan.  However, I’ve now been converted after tonight.

The cool thing (besides the fact that Josh said that we were way better than Winnipeg, and rock stars never lie about stuff like that!) is that the other stops on the tour thus far have been getting 3 or 4 of the big hits, and then they’ll mix in the others on the next show.  However, this show had ALL of them:  Do It Again, Feelgood Hit, Sick Sick Sick, Go With the Flow, No One Knows, Little Sister, Song For the Deaf…even my favorite off the new CD, Make It Witchu.  Turns out I know and enjoy a LOT more QOTSA songs than I thought, which was a pleasant surprise.

Edit:  Found the full setlist off the website.  This sounds right to me:

Do It Again
Feel Good Hit of the Summer
Sick, Sick, Sick,
Mexicola
Better Living Through Chemistry
3’s & 7’s
I Never Came
Burn The Witch
Era Vulgaris
Little Sister
Battery Acid
I Wanna Make It Wit Chu
Song For The Dead
Turnin’ On The Screw
Go With The Flow
Encore:
No One Knows
Regular John

It was an amazing crowd, too, energetic and rocking without being obnoxious (probably due to all the pot) and the band was really feeding off it.  Even the songs I didn’t immediately know were so rocked out that everyone was just losing it and grooving on them anyway.  An absolutely phenomenal show and I’ll definitely catch them again if they swing through here on their next tour.

Another pleasant surprise was actually getting recognized in public, as a fan came up to me and wanted to let me know that he bought my books, which is always very cool.  Whoever it is, thanks a lot if you’re reading, it always makes my day when stuff like that happens to me.

Oh, yeah, Summerslam

Almost forgot.

Didn’t watch it, but I hear that John Cena overcame the odds and retained the title, and HHH went over in his return match.  I’m shocked at both.  Didn’t sound like a great show or anything, either, which is also par for the course these days.

Nasty Nick in car accident

No details on Nick’s condition here, but a car flipping over and being destroyed at high speed generally doesn’t bode well.

Stuck in Yorkton

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

So part of the fun of being married is that when your wife is part of a wedding party for someone, you have to come along with her for the three days it takes.  Even worse, rather than having the wedding in Saskatoon where at least most of the invited guests would already be, it’s in fucking Ebenezer, Saskatchewan, which is easy to get to:  Just locate “Middle of nowhere” on your GPS and it’s about 3 hours east of that.  Even better, the ceremony is in the backyard of the maid of honor, and the reception is in the abandoned elementary school gym down the street.  Luckily I escaped the setup tonight, although I still have to sit through the wedding, so that leaves me lots of time to sit and watch wrestling on YouTube, because at least the hotel in Yorkton has wireless internet.

Here’s my favorite for tonight:  Ted Dibiase v. Jim Duggan in a cage match.  With a coal miner’s glove on a pole.  And tuxedos.  And TONS of blood.

Also tonight, I’ve been working through Starrcade 85 for fun, because I was curious to watch the Andersons v. Billy Jack & Wahoo National tag title match, and it’s pretty good!

Part One:

Part Two:

Enjoy and discuss. I’ll be here all weekend.
