Plug for … me?

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

“Scott,
Long time reader, have one of your books, yadda,
yadda, yadda. Anyway, I wrote a review of Wrestlemania
23 two days in advance, in the style of your rants
just for the fun of it, and I was wondering if I could
get you to read it and/or plug it on your blog.

Thanks a bunch,
Rick Poehling”

I laughed at the career-ending injury to Batista!  You’ve definitely got the style down, for sure.

WM Plug

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

“Hey, it’s me again, Charlie Reneke of Stablewars.  I hope you liked the Top 10 Dumbest Promotional move thing I wrote.  This time, I write you in request of a plug for the annual Wrestlemania Play Per View at Stablewars.com.  The last time you plugged it, we had a record number of entrees but it ended up crashing the website for a week.  Hopefully now with our stronger server it won’t be so bad.

For your readers: The game is a pay per view pick’em game.  Simply pick who you think the winners are for each match.  The scoring works like this: you get one point for picking the correct outcome of a match, then you get an additional point for each person that did not pick the outcome correctly.  DQs and Countouts don’t matter, just the winner.  If you think the match will end in a draw, simply write down “Draw” for that match.  Simple.  For the tiebreaker, you pick the match time, and the closest to it breaks the tie.  Most points, regardless of how many matches you got correctly, wins.  Below is the entry form.  Simply send an e-mail with your picks to ShawnHanksLoW@AOL.com before Wrestlemania starts at 7PM EST/4PM PST.  You can also enter on the forum of Stablewars.com.  Any Scott Keith bloggers should note that they saw the entry from Scott’s blog.  If the winner comes from there, I’ll be sure to pass it along to Scott.  And BTW, you’re free to enter too, Mr. Keith.

Good luck to anyone who chooses to enter.

Blades of Glory

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

OK, so you knew I’d be there for opening night with bells on and ready to laugh my ass off, but what was really surprising to me about Will Ferrell’s latest “life lessons for the arrogant” movie is that it was actually quite a good MOVIE.  I’d say it’s definitely better than Talladega Nights, which had a bunch of a really funny parts sandwiched between a lot of lulls (mainly the racing stuff), but it’s not quite on the level of nirvana that was Anchorman.  However, that’s hardly fair, because Anchorman had the genius of Steve Carell ready to be unleashed like a hidden switchblade of comedy and Paul Rudd at his most slimy, plus the screenplay was just chock full of anarchic wackiness.  Blades was kind of shocking in that not only was it consistently funny from start to finish, but people actually APPLAUDED at the end of it.  And it’s got Pam!  Being all Pam-my!  And Will Ferrell is groping her boobs for a laugh and I’m thinking “Geez, Jim’s really gonna be jealous now”.  It was kind of weird.  And it’s got GOB!  It’s like all my favorite shows in one!  Napolean Dynomite was even pretty funny for once.  Too many great lines to list, although I’m not sure if “Did you carve up some ice…with your weiner?” can displace the Sarah Silverman quotes currently being used on my MSN.

Anyway, go see it, it’s funny.  Figure skating had it coming.

“Good evening Scott -

Long time reader, first time e-mailer.  Or maybe not, I may have e-mailed you years ago when I followed professional wrestling, I can’t honestly remember.  But I’ve recently started a new blog of my own, and I posted an article today reflecting on my years as a wrestling fan with WrestleMania coming to my hometown this weekend.  If you wouldn’t mind giving the blog (and the post) a plug, I’d greatly appreciate it.  http://swarheit.blogspot.com.

Thanks a lot and keep up the good work.

-Scott”

Sure, Scott, no problem.

The Wrestlemania prediction thread!

Friday, March 30th, 2007

So yes, I will be ordering Wrestlemania 23, my first WM since the 18th one (I saw 19 and 20 live, but didn’t exactly order them, if you know what I mean) and hopefully it won’t disappoint as much as recent WWE PPVs have done.  That being said, I’m counting on Shawn Michaels to carry Cena to the best match of his life, and I don’t doubt for a second that he can pull it off.  Really, I want to see that match and MITB, and I’m really quite curious to see what Umaga v. Lashley ends up as because I have no idea who’s winning any of them and that’s a rarity.

Cena v. Michaels

Obviously this’ll be the match of the night, and probably of the year thus far.  This is exactly the sort of situation where delivers like Dominos, in 30 minutes or less, and I think he might be trying for the all-time showstealing record with this match.  I think if he could use smoke and mirrors to get broken-down Kurt Angle to nearly ***** two years ago, before we knew how bad Angle’s situation was, he can get there with Cena.  Cena’s a guy who always delivers on the big shows, and the heat will be off the charts here whether it’s booing or cheering him.  It should close the show, get 30 minutes, and probably be a strong MOTY candidate.  No small feat to be sure.  As for the winner, my gut says Cena but I’m cheering for Michaels, which shows how much he’s rehabilitated himself as a person.  I say give him one more run with the title, because god knows he can carry it and he’s the most over babyface they’ve got left on RAW right now.  Either way, the loser goes heel, I think.

Batista v. Undertaker

Could be decent, could be all kinds of bowling shoe ugly, flip a coin.  After Royal Rumble I would have bet my life savings on Batista retaining and thus breaking the streak, but now forget it.  This is the one sure thing on the show — Undertaker either walks out as champion or wins by DQ or something lame like that, but either way he gets his hand raised.  Vince might be deluded and in possession of giant balls of steel when it comes to booking, but I think even he knows that it’s time to draw the line with Batista.

Umaga v. Lashley

This should fall easily into the “entertaining crap” milieu, with tons of gimmicks and blood and crazy table-breaking action, etc. I was 100% sure that Vince was getting shaved until a couple of weeks ago, when they started doing press with Trump hinting that he’s being a bigger man for charity and such.  Really, though, when it comes down it, Lashley is The Project and Umaga is expendable, and they’re not gonna waste Ahmed Johnson 2.0 with a loss here when this is supposed to be his big moment at Wrestlemania to launch him into the stratosphere.  It won’t work, but they’re sure as fuck gonna try.  Vince goes bald here.

Money In The Bank

I don’t even know who’s in it, but they’re really good as booking these things and Jeff Hardy will be up for killing himself for my pleasure, so it should hit **** without too much trouble.  Whether it’ll be anything special is another thing entirely.  I’m thinking that Randy Orton wins, but really it’s not a big deal if he doesn’t because they’ll just keep pushing him anyway.

Chris Benoit v. MVP

It’ll probably open the show, and I don’t get why everyone thinks MVP is winning the belt here.  Benoit has been the midcard goto guy for months now as US champion, and I don’t see any reason why they would take the title off him here.  Benoit by submission, should be decent, but then I thought that about Benoit v. JBL last year and he couldn’t pull of a miracle there, so who knows.

I can’t remember any of the other matches, but if the above ones deliver, it’ll be worth my $50 CAN.

Well, gee, good thing JImmy Yang has moved past being stuck in a silly undercard gimmick, isn’t it?

On the Joey Mercury thing…

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

It sounds like Mercury’s firing was due to yet another painkiller addiction, but at this point you have to wonder how much of this is really the WWE’s fault.  The whole point of the Wellness Program is, I had thought, to make sure people don’t get hooked on this stuff, and have a way to get better.  Instead, Joey has a crazy match and busts up his face on a WWE PPV, gets hooked on drugs again to deal with the hurting, and then WWE turns around and fires him after essentially encouraging him to wrestle hurt in the first place!  I think they need a SUPPORT system, not a punishment system, and until they have one it’s only going to get worse.

Good Thing or Bad Thing?

UFC buys Pride, promises mega events. Seems like it will be good for the fan if the fighters are willing to face each other. Of course given the recent reputation of the way UFC treats its fighters, I’m wondering how the MMA participants feel about this.

And I’m sure Scotty wants to know how YOU feel about it.

24

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

I haven’t been doing much posting about 24 recently because, let’s face it, it’s been kind of a blah season, but by god had Jack Bauer been forced to torture and kill a retarded guy for his country, it would have gone over the top and been the best on TV again.  As it is, Sy Tolliver with his finger on the button is making for almost as good TV, although I’m waiting for Swearengen to come in and call him a cocksucker.  Powers Boothe really, really makes me miss Deadwood.

That is all.
