So yes, I will be ordering Wrestlemania 23, my first WM since the 18th one (I saw 19 and 20 live, but didn’t exactly order them, if you know what I mean) and hopefully it won’t disappoint as much as recent WWE PPVs have done. That being said, I’m counting on Shawn Michaels to carry Cena to the best match of his life, and I don’t doubt for a second that he can pull it off. Really, I want to see that match and MITB, and I’m really quite curious to see what Umaga v. Lashley ends up as because I have no idea who’s winning any of them and that’s a rarity.
Cena v. Michaels
Obviously this’ll be the match of the night, and probably of the year thus far. This is exactly the sort of situation where delivers like Dominos, in 30 minutes or less, and I think he might be trying for the all-time showstealing record with this match. I think if he could use smoke and mirrors to get broken-down Kurt Angle to nearly ***** two years ago, before we knew how bad Angle’s situation was, he can get there with Cena. Cena’s a guy who always delivers on the big shows, and the heat will be off the charts here whether it’s booing or cheering him. It should close the show, get 30 minutes, and probably be a strong MOTY candidate. No small feat to be sure. As for the winner, my gut says Cena but I’m cheering for Michaels, which shows how much he’s rehabilitated himself as a person. I say give him one more run with the title, because god knows he can carry it and he’s the most over babyface they’ve got left on RAW right now. Either way, the loser goes heel, I think.
Batista v. Undertaker
Could be decent, could be all kinds of bowling shoe ugly, flip a coin. After Royal Rumble I would have bet my life savings on Batista retaining and thus breaking the streak, but now forget it. This is the one sure thing on the show — Undertaker either walks out as champion or wins by DQ or something lame like that, but either way he gets his hand raised. Vince might be deluded and in possession of giant balls of steel when it comes to booking, but I think even he knows that it’s time to draw the line with Batista.
Umaga v. Lashley
This should fall easily into the “entertaining crap” milieu, with tons of gimmicks and blood and crazy table-breaking action, etc. I was 100% sure that Vince was getting shaved until a couple of weeks ago, when they started doing press with Trump hinting that he’s being a bigger man for charity and such. Really, though, when it comes down it, Lashley is The Project and Umaga is expendable, and they’re not gonna waste Ahmed Johnson 2.0 with a loss here when this is supposed to be his big moment at Wrestlemania to launch him into the stratosphere. It won’t work, but they’re sure as fuck gonna try. Vince goes bald here.
Money In The Bank
I don’t even know who’s in it, but they’re really good as booking these things and Jeff Hardy will be up for killing himself for my pleasure, so it should hit **** without too much trouble. Whether it’ll be anything special is another thing entirely. I’m thinking that Randy Orton wins, but really it’s not a big deal if he doesn’t because they’ll just keep pushing him anyway.
Chris Benoit v. MVP
It’ll probably open the show, and I don’t get why everyone thinks MVP is winning the belt here. Benoit has been the midcard goto guy for months now as US champion, and I don’t see any reason why they would take the title off him here. Benoit by submission, should be decent, but then I thought that about Benoit v. JBL last year and he couldn’t pull of a miracle there, so who knows.
I can’t remember any of the other matches, but if the above ones deliver, it’ll be worth my $50 CAN.
